Best Way To Store An Engine

Recommended Posts

So I am currently stripping my R33 Gtst down in preparation for a race build, and am interested in the best way to store the engine when it comes out of the car.

Ultimately it will be pulled down again to check the internals are holding up, but would hope not to cause it any problems in the process of storage.

Thanks in advance

The way I do it is drain all fluids when engine warm, pull it out and fill with running in oil or a cheap engine oil, put plastic bags over intake plenum and turbo dump pipes and coolant openings with elastic bands to keep them on. And every few months rotate engine by hand just to keep it all moving.

Wouldn't really need to fill with oil, just leave abit in and as said turn it by hand. Water

is what you want out as it will corrode from being stagnant for so long. No amount of corrosion inhibitors will stop that.

And as said above, fill all openings with clean clotch or cover with bags. Even after a

fair while of not running my old motor still turned nicely, still had a nice clean coat of oil visible parts. To make turning easier, remove plugs so the pressure can escape the cylinder.

You can use a high quality water soluble oil in the cooling system, the type used for lathes and milling machines as coolant. But you must flush it very well when you put it back together. I have used it for years in salt water cooled ski boat engines stored over the winter with no problems. It ain't cheap but it works. But depends how long you want to store it.
