Hi,

I've got a Skyline R33 GTS-t and took it to a Pedders for one of their 28pt checks. This is what they came up with:

Rear shocks leaking

Rear bump stops missing (probably disintergrated due to faulty shocks they said)

Rear hicas link worn

All four tyres worn (do pedders do tyres? i didnt see any in the shop. gotta call 'em. maybe it was noted for safety)

To supply, fit, and wheel align vehicle $880 (as above, not sure if that includes four tyres)

That is the quote pretty much word for word, there is no mention of what brand and model the replacement parts will be.

After reading various forums and googling for customers opinions I am not 100% sure I should go ahead with the quote.

If I was to get it repaired I would be taking it to Pedders in Dandenong, who did not do the original quote (had to get it done elsewhere due to location) OR is there some other suspension business in the Springvale/Dandenong/Narre Warren area that can be recommended?

Thanks for any help.

Mike

Pedders don't do tyres.

Even if they did, if all the work all up including parts and new tyres cost $880 you wouldn't want the tyres.

Shop around, ask them where they got the quote for parts from and if you can get you're own, you'll most certainly get cheaper, but they may not allow you to supply parts.

It's upto you and how much you want to save some $$$.

But from pedders wheel alignment and balance should cost you $170. I'm getting that done to my R34 25GT monday at Pedders in Carlton.

That's what I figured. The shocks were their own stock.

I figure i'll take it to pedders in dandy, get them to check it over and go ahead. I've heard Midas do this kind of work too however the net didn't turn up much about them so I think i'll stay clear.

    • Hope you aren't too sore after that one, might take a day or 2 to notice yet and I guess it is a loooooong drive home. On the bright side, tube frame front end is a thing at superlap, right?

    • The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same. There are plenty of discussions on here about this issue from al the many years of people wanting a cheap/accessible option. https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/ https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/
    • Yeah dunno why johhny posted that here with no context, just post on FB/insta bro where he put it up?  Laine had an off at T4 during Thurs prac, he's ok, car is less than perfect, they are done for the weekend, he can fill in the rest. Bando also binned it like 100m up the road.
