hi guys................ ive done some small research on this and have done some DIY jobs trying to eliminate problems with the pinging at high revs........ driving half throttle (normal driving) is good but when u get into high revs just pings alot

i have replaced the fuel filter..........also checked spark plugs and the coil packs (splitfire coils)

i also have a walbro 550hp intake fuel pump. Just trying to eliminate small jobs, could be timing but its around $1500, dont wanna spend that if its not the problem. could also be other minor ones. IE plenum gasket, injectors

If anyone has fixed or known a problem let me know so i can fix the job right away. thanks guys

Im driving a 93 R33 running a r34 turbo (10psi) Stock ECU, splitfire coil packs, walbro 550hp fuel pump just to name a few mods.

Any ideas wold be greatly appreciate

thanks chris

Could be a million things, most likely fuel related though, fuel pump > filter > injectors > fuel reg. It is likely to be one of these. Other thing is has the base timing been changed?

Whatever you do stop driving it when it is pinging, you will destroy a piston/ring land very quickly.

i havent been thrashing it, i have posted something similar to this about a month ago, and ive been working pretty hard to find the problem, rather fix it than thrash it and bam redo an engine. im not sure about the timing, ive had the car for about 3months and the guy said he done the timing but in my mind.....he hasnt......theres no sticker on the timing cover stating otherwise........ if its fuel related then i have started with one...filter...can pick up another pump for 150.

What do you mean when you saying 'timing', as in the cam belt? If you do it yourself you don't need to sticker it, just have a look and see if it looks new, that won't cause any issues though.

When I said base timing I meant the CAS.

i meant by the timing itself, not the CAS..... but ill check the cam belt in the next two days. how much would take cost roughly?

If the timing belt is fine (it will be timing wise, might be old and need to be replaced though) and the CAS is set correctly (get a timing light and check) and you have a stock ecu then there is nothing else timing related that can be changed.

Changing the timing belt (if it is old and frayed) should be $400 ish max, whoever quoted you $1500 is taking you for a ride, I think I got the water pump done as well in that 400 when I paid someone years ago.

thanks heaps.. yeah ill check the timing belt and CAS on thursday when i have my day off, ill keep you posted. .hrm ill look at buying a timing light, not sure where to buy one on the sunny coast but ill do some shopping, also do some quotes on getting the timing and water pump also.

when i bought the car, the guy said that he didnt know about the timing belt, he had it for two years but got it serviced though..... said the coilpacks were brand new and same with the fuel pump, so i elminated them..... but not sure if i should trust his words....

ill keep this updated then

i do have a nissan store down the road from me, do go there mostly all the time, but they are pretty over priced on things...... just for a plenum gasket is around $100 and i saw on some other parts site for a plenum gasket for $40.

maybe you should check the compression too... if its all carboned up inside it will have too much

ive had the cas fully advanced before and added octane booster with no audible pinging or problems, only time it pinged was with low octane fuel, ( i dont do that anymore) just saying with a standard ECU it must run rich enough to wind the cas up a fair bit, from the 2 rb25det that ive seen after being tuned, its sits about half way.

Does the car run hot?? if it were overheating it would ping pretty fast,

Do you have a boost guage to make sure its not overboosting and running out of fuel?

i never go below quarter of a tank of fuel always full, i do watch the boost gauge never goes past 10psi, i barely hit that mark when the noise comes, dont want to ruin the car....... and it doesnt run hot, sits on below normal tempt. does it in the cold aswell, took it out for a 1am cruise and it still did the same. i have seen the AFM is abit dirty and worse than wear so i might look into replacing it, also did check one spark plug but my cousin said if its sparking and starting then shouldnt be a problem, even with the coil packs (his a hands on mechanic) but this thursday ill be pulling it all apart and having a closer look.....also been looking into buying NGK iridium spark plugs priced at 100.

Dont waste your money on iridium plugs there rubbish

False. There is nothing wrong with Iridium plugs....or Platinum plugs for that matter. They serve their intended purpose. If you want to make 200% more power than Nissan intended, then maybe you have to revisit their design or if you want your 20 year old ignition system bandaid fixed, then sure, go coppers.

Iridiums actually have a finer tip, allowing them to fire a much more precise and direct spark at higher intensity. This gives better combustion and due to the iridium tip, they last a lot longer. If he is running a standard car then he doesn't need anything more

I think he point was more they aren't worth the money on a modified skyline, imo you are more likely to ruin a plug from fouling it and can buy something like 10+ sets of coppers for the price of an iridium. If the car is running sweet and doesn't need really small gaps and is tuned properly then the extra kms you can get out of iridiums probably gives them some pros though.

yeah well i need to find good products that will give me more than say 12months + not something i will have to fix in 2months. Been driving the car steady, just want to fix this pinging noise at 4500rpm. I have seen a few vids on youtube but doesnt specify what the problem was.... i have splitfire coils but on forums says they dont break..... thats whats in my mind..... $500+ for a new pair, just dont want to start thinking its them in a way........been doing some homework on parts, prices etc.....but rather work from the simplest job to the most expensive.

any feedback is greatly appreciated. and anything that has worked for you guys.

read all our posts again? we told you what it almost certainly is....

i have and i also have found this : R5671A - 8 for my sparkplugs........has anyone used these ones before? Someone had the same problem and recommended them so ill give them a try.

    • Apologies for the long post, but needed somewhere to lay out the entire timeline of events and actions taken:   I've got an 89 GTR with a R34 RB in it. It's been running great all year, driven probably 500KM in the last month. It's not my daily driver, just a weekend fun car.    Build info: R34 RB26 - HKS 2.7 stroker kit, HKS adjustable cam gears, HKS turbo upgrades, Trust intercooler, R34 factory DENSO 440cc injectors, JUN chipped/tuned R32 ECU. All of this work was performed in Japan back in 2019.    Thursday 10/2/25 - It's a nice day and decided I'll drive it to work, I start it up in the garage and I notice it took a few extra cranks and sounded a bit funny. I figure maybe it was just because it was a pretty chilly morning. I pull it out into the driveway to warm up a bit before leaving. As I leave the driveway, it feels very off and sounds like a misfire. I pull it back in the garage to deal with after work and take the daily to work. I was able to diagnose it as a cylinder 5 misfire with the old spark plug test (unplugging each plug until a sound change with the engine running). I take off the whole ignition system, ignitor, plugs, spark. *Important note, it is still on the R32 ignition system with the separate ignitor system. I test each system with a multi-meter and nothing presents as a smoking gun. I put it all back together and it starts up no issue. I go ahead and order the PRP R35 ignition conversion kit. It should arrive today (10/13/25)   Friday 10/3/25 - Another nice day, car starts up great and drives great all day. Very pleased that everything seems to be OK   Sunday 10/5/25 - Decided I'll take it to play some golf, load up and drive to the course about 25 minutes away. Drives wonderful the whole way there, I pull in the parking lot and the engine completely comes to a stop. I do not recall if it sputtered at all, but just remember all of the sudden the engine was off. I roll it into a parking spot, try to crank it back on and nothing.  It'll crank and crank and not even try to start. End up getting it towed back to my house and push it up into the garage.    Items I have checked: Fuel in the tank Fuel Pump relay Fuel pump fuse  Spark Plugs & gap Coil packs Ignitor    I know the cylinders are getting fuel as the plugs smell like fuel after a start attempt. I tried spraying starter fluid into the manifold and cranking and not even a sputter.    I decided to do the live CAS test (removing the the CAS, ignition on and spinning the CAS stalk to see if the injectors pulse and spark is active). All of the injectors were pulsing and I have spark at the plug. The half-moon end of the CAS did seem very loose, I'm not sure how much play is supposed to be there, but it was more than I expected. There was no in/out play of the shaft, just the tip end that is pinned on had quite a bit of play.    CAS Play video   When I put the CAS back in, I stupidly did not re-time the engine. I know I need to do that tonight, however, I do not think it will start given it seemingly was not the issue. My plan is to do the PRP R35 coil kit and retime the engine at the same time.    I plan on ordering the Haltech Nexus Plug-in ECU once they are available again, but ideally would like to get this sorted before firing the parts cannon at it and potentially adding more variables.    Anything glaring that I am missing here, I'm a bit at a loss?
    • Get it on a dyno. Get something logging Consult. Run it up and find out what is causing it.
    • Looking for a plenum for rb25 de+t neo  Not looking to push much power maybe 300kw at the wheels, is there much difference in flow for Freddy “Greddy style” compared to original Greddy or options like Proflow or Otaku garage?    I won’t be porting the de Neo head for now as I think it’ll be fine 280-300rwkw but appreciate the help and any experiences anyone has between them and any advice. Thanks  Looking at this plenum for now below
