One more thing youd want to take into consideration is skylines are cop targets espxially on P's and clearing defects again and again can be hard and expensive.

Not necessarily, I never even get looked at by cops in mine, granted it is silver and a 4 door but I'm not exactly the most sedate driver in the world.

Equally as important is where and when you drive your car. You're much less likely to be pulled commuting to work in peakhour than you are at 2am on the highway.

Well i took into account hes young just got hes new car and im tipping hed want to go out at nights on the weekend and take the car out which is majority of the time when you get done.

Resale for the manual shouldnt budge much from the original purchase price either, hell if you get it cheap you might even be able to ask a bit more for it come time of sale.

4 doors just have a different stigma.

i used to nos my 4 door everywhere. never got targeted over a 7 month period in a place that doesnt go to well for imports.

my car was purple with a white bonnet and decals, its like what the hell am i invisible??? lol.

Good on the OP for jumping on here and asking. You're son is lucky that his dad is putting so much effort into looking out for him.

The first thing I though of when looking at that car was it has no anti-lock brakes and no airbags. Both of which you can get on a car for 4-5k. I was looking for a car for my gf to do her l's on (she won't take the p's test!), and ended up getting a magna. Decent car, excellent torque, quick enough, cheap enough on fuel with a tune and the manuals are very reliable. But my main priority was safety.

That car is also rwd, possibly with a viscous lsd and no traction control, which means it's gonna try to spin on him. Add an auto gearbox into that and he may unluckily give it too much throttle going round a corner, drop down a gear and spin.

Actually chances are he's going to spin at some point in time. He's just hoping that it's not into the oncoming lane. It's a very different car to what he's driven and it only takes one overestimation and a split second decision to make a mistake.

Most people on here will testify that these are not cheap cars to run. You have to regularly change the oil and filter, petrol will cost a fortune, and when things go wrong they're not the easiest cars to fix for your average mechanic. You'd be well advised to only go to a mechanic familiar with skylines, there are plenty of horror stories from people using the mechanic "down the road".

Also only going third party insurance may be a mistake, though I'm guessing he wouldn't be able to afford comprehensive. Going third party means if he does crash it, he's thrown a lot of money away, and if someone hits him, he's got to chase it up, and it can play out in court over many months.

Skylines are largely police targets. He probably will be pulled over, and if he's unlucky, regardless of how he drives he'll be treated like a hoon. Is it too much of a risk for him to drive a car thoroughly labelled a hoon car if trouble now could effect him later? (I genuinely don't know, but it's something worth considering).

Sorry for all the negatives, skylines are fun cars but like all cars they have their place. He seems to be taking a lot of risks just to drive a 20 year old auto skyline.

Also, I agree with the above, he should really be looking at learning manual asap. Think of how much more time he'll have with it once he gets into the police force. Better learning early, even if it's a god awful pain to learn (I've been teaching my p-plate brother in his new car, he's a good driver, skill-wise, but initially found it a lot to think about. He had one 2 hour lesson then drove to work in peak hour the next morning, he was pretty uncomfortable haha)

    • Absolute f*cking nightmare. I had to take breaks constantly, and I was always pissed off when I got home. The line split in Italy on day 2 (we drove from the Netherlands), lol. Driving any narrow European town was... well, sh*t.   Appreciate it man. Here, I'll just drop a favourite from the load I took on Saturday.   I'll update here when things happen with the car, the thing is, with stock power and almost everything chassis-wise taken care of, there really are no problems. 268,000kms now and counting.
    • Ah! I actually managed to snag a lightly used set.... that aren't so suitable for me right now. They don't work on a GTT without some cutting or creative heat moulding. I thought about reselling them myself cause I didn't want to murder them, but it looks like I'm probably going to attempt to murder them/melt them because I may as well. @GTSBoy @PranK can somebody close this thread?
    • Hey mate,  I have a set, one is slightly damaged but wont be noticable once installed.  Shoot me a message if your still after them
    • I couldn't wait But, the black constant tension hose clamps were too thick and there wasn't enough clearance at the T/B and I couldn't get it to seat properly, so I had use a silver one there I also added some 3" silicone over the alloy bit that goes through to hole on the radiator support as it looked like it was sitting on the edge of the hole in the radiator support, I never noticed a rattle or anything, but there was a witness mark It is basicly done, and I can live with the silver hose clamp at the T/B, I will get a black clamp for the head vent though where it is attached to the bulkhead fitting  It never stops...LOL, only issue now with the shock tower brace is it slightly touches the under bonnet liner now, if I leave it it will either wear some paint off the brace where it touches, or damage the liner, so I removed the liner to see what I have to work with, with the liner removed I have about 20mm of clearance, but sadly the middle part of the underside of the bonnet is only dusted with paint and looks crap, so I cannot have that, but.... as I have a roll of Carbuilders premium under bonnet insulation in the garage laying around that is only 5.5mm thick (we were going to use it on the boys Patrol, but he crashed the front of it a few months and it was written off, hence why he now drives my old Honda Accord Euro), I'll use the OEM liner as a template and get the Carbuilders stuff fitted up to cover that dusted paint up
