Pulling Apart The Steering Rack

Hi all,

I'm in the process of pulling apart the steering rack in order to put new seals etc in. Pretty much most of it's apart except for the the rod that goes through the middle,it a bugger to get out.

Here's where I'm at:

There also seems to be a seal on one but I'm not sure how to get it out,maybe this could be stopping the rod going straight through:

Ideas on getting the rod out?

Have you tried tapping the end of the rack trough on the pinion end with a soft hammer? The black bushings in the end might have a firm fit between them and the body.

I've thought about it but was worried I might break something inside, perhaps a plastic ring or something, I'm not too sure what's inside lol. I'll give it a go anyways.
