Ok I did a search and found 167 results for 'manual to auto conversion'. The only thing is that I am looking for manual to auto and every thread I saw was about auto to manual. Anyway I have an rb30 auto in the shed and I want to make my r33 gtst an auto. Why you ask? Many reasons, one of them being ease of driving. Btw when I replaced my radiator the other week I replaced it with an auto one so I already have the heat exchanger in the radiator. I have the rb30 flex plate and torque convertor as well. I have replaced many a gearbox and will have no trouble swapping it over, providing that I wont get halfway and then go "f**k I have to pull it out again". So if you know a thread that has this covered then put up the link or lemme know if this is a viable option. Also it will be molesterated by a gt3582r so I want it to last longer than a day. Thanks in advance. biggrin.gif

To start with, your RB30 box is not going to last with the full potential of that turbo. You could possibly have it built to handle it but I have my doubts.

If you read the auto - manual conversions....just reverse it. You would need an ECU with that turbo mod so assuming you go with a decent ECU like a V500 or a Platinum, it should be capable of auto control. The rest is just bolt in stuff in reverse of the opposite conversion (clutch pedal box removal, brake pedal change, flex plate, auto + converter, tailshaft, shifter etc) The rest is done by the ECU

Ha yeah the mrs will drive it occasionally and auto's are quicker. I pretty much knew what I had to do in terms of the swap but wasn't sure about the comp for the auto. I'm running a pfc so that means no auto control. It would not bother me in the slightest tho if I had to shift the auto box from 1st up to drive like a manual. From the sound of it so far I will be waiting till I upgrade my ecu. Or till the clutch breaks or something like that. Thanks for the reply Elite Racing.

I was just about to create a thread similar to this. The reason I want to do it is for drag racing.

What exactly do you need "auto control" for? The transmission simply cannot run as a standalone unit similar to old USDM autos? Like it wouldn't shift at all or what? If I do need "auto control" I guess my goose is cooked because I'm running an RB20 manual ECU with nistune.

You need auto control to control stuff like fluid pressure and when the trans shifts. Considering there aren't many wires coming from the gear box I daresay it would be fairly simple to get it to shift the way you want with a couple of resistor pots and switches or the like. I cant see it being too hard to get a signal from the ecu that would do the trick when used/modified correctly. But I've never done it so I could be digging for gold in a drop dunny.

Rather than buggering up a perfectly good manual Skyline, just go and buy an auto one ferchrissakes.

Who said anything about buggering anything up? And if I had a spare $15k to throw at a skyline it would be the one I have not another one. But you can buy me one if you're that rich.

I think it's a good idea. What about the simpler boxes like the Ford C4?

There is only one problem that can be encountered from that setup.....he will have ford parts on his car. May as well drive the thing off the edge of a quarry right now.

R32/33 auto boxes have a separate control unit that would really just need to be fed the appropriate inputs from the ECU.

R34's TCM is part of the ECU.

Something I would like to figure out is how to control 34GTT tiptronic box without having to wire in a whole 34GTT ECU..

A simple solution would be a fully manualised Jatco box (someone has one for sale in the WA area at the moment).

^ That is what I was thinking. Except they want $3200 and I could build my own for a fraction of that.

As far as selling the car I have and getting an auto one I would be no better off. I have put stacks of money into this one and I would be hard pressed to get it back if I sold it. Would you pay $14k for a stock looking 95 s2 r33gtst that has shitloads of bolt ons? Thats what it cost me. Even If I put all the stock parts back into it and sold it I would be stuffing around for a few days to make it stock again not to mention fitting it all the bits to the new car. Then I would have a slow as f**k auto skyline that cant run the injectors or the afm or the turbo that I am putting on in a week or so. And if I were to keep the pfc and use it then I would lose the auto control anyway. Or I'd have to upgrade my ecu which would cost another grand on top of the pfc sale price. Then I'd have to mess around for a month driving here and there tuning it. Since I already have an auto trans that came attached to the rb30 I bought I will use that. Who cares about changing gears when you have more power than you can use? For me an auto is better at high power for street use. Just floor it and hold on with both hands. woot.gif

Not sure, I think MV Autos do some sort of shift control box for them though.

I've got a 34GTT auto sitting in my carport and after experiencing the tiptronic in the Stagea I'm trying to find a way to put the tiptronic box in the 32. Need to get my electronics mate to have a look in the 34 ECU and see if we can maybe extract the TCM chip (it's a separate board) and feed it some inputs..

I cant believe the lack of info on this subject; compared with the loads of other great info you auzzies have ;) . I've been scouring the internet for the last 3 hours and I haven't come up with much. It's almost worth me going custom and adapting a bullet proof Chevy auto. This way I know it will work how I want it to. I've emailed MV Automatics. I hope to get a response out of them.

It's a separate board but it has a huge number of pins. It's not truly separate - it relies on a lot of the engine ECU's stuff to do it's job.

If you want tiptronic in the R32, your best bet is to get a whole Auto Neo engine and trans and put it in. It will make it better in every single way....except that it will be an auto instead of a manual, which will ruin it as far as I'm concerned.

I took great pleasure in removing the TCU board from my Neo's ECU and throwing it in the bin when we opened it up to put the Nistune board in it.

http://www.rodshop.c...s/2wd_trans.htm

Check this out. You can buy a conversion kit including bellhousing to fit different transmissions to the rb30.

I know someone who has a manualised trimatic for sale that has handled over 350 rwhp. Sounds good to me.

I went through all this not long ago, rebuild a Jatco that will only last so long. Find a ecu that will control it and so on. I ended up putting in a powerglide so i could choose

whatever ecu i wanted. Bought the parts to rebuild it from Summit racing and you will have a box that will last.

    • And finally, the front lower mount. It was doubly weird. Firstly, the lower mount is held in with a bracket that has 3 bolts (it also acts as the steering lock stop), and then a nut on the shock lower mount itself. So, remove the 3x 14mm head bolts , then the 17mm nut that holds the shock in. From there, you can't actually remove the shock from the lower mount bolt (took me a while to work that out....) Sadly I don't have a pic of the other side, but the swaybar mounts to the same bolt that holds the shock in. You need to push that swaybar mount/bolt back so the shock can be pulled out past the lower control arm.  In this pic you can see the bolt partly pushed back, but it had to go further than that to release the shock. Once the shock is out, putting the new one in is "reverse of disassembly". Put the top of the shock through at least one hole and put a nut on loosely to hold it in place. Put the lower end in place and push the swaybar mount / shock bolt back in place, then loosely attach the other 2 top nuts. Bolt the bracket back in place with the 14mm head bolts and finally put the nut onto the lower bolt. Done....you have new suspension on your v37!
    • And now to the front.  No pics of the 3 nuts holding the front struts on, they are easy to spot. Undo 2 and leave the closest one on loosely. Underneath we have to deal with the wiring again, but this time its worse because the plug is behind the guard liner. You'll have to decide how much of the guard liner to remove, I undid the lower liner's top, inside and lower clips, but didn't pull it full off the guard. Same issue undoing the plug as at the rear, you need to firmly push the release clip from below while equally firmly gripping the plug body and pulling it out of  the socket. I used my fancy electrical disconnect pliers to get in there There is also one clip for the wiring, unlike at the rear I could not get behind it so just had to lever it up and out.....not in great condition to re-use in future.
    • Onto the rear lower shock mount. It's worth starting with a decent degrease to remove 10+ years of road grime, and perhaps also spray a penetrating oil on the shock lower nut. Don't forget to include the shock wiring and plug in the clean.... Deal with the wiring first; you need to release 2 clips where the wiring goes into the bracket (use long nose pliers behind the bracket to compress the clip so you can reuse it), and the rubber mount slides out, then release the plug.  I found it very hard to unplug, from underneath you can compress the tab with a screwdriver or similar, and gently but firmly pull the plug out of the socket (regular pliers may help but don't put too much pressure on the plastic. The lower mount is straightforward, 17mm nut and you can pull the shock out. As I wasn't putting a standard shock back in, I gave the car side wiring socket a generous gob of dialectric grease to keep crap out in the future. Putting the new shock in is straightforward, feed it into at least 1 of the bolt holes at the top and reach around to put a nut on it to hold it up. Then put on the other 2 top nuts loosely and put the shock onto the lower mounting bolt (you may need to lift the hub a little if the new shock is shorter). Tighten the lower nut and 3 upper nuts and you are done. In my case the BC Racing shocks came assembled for the fronts, but the rears needed to re-use the factory strut tops. For that you need spring compressors to take the pressure off the top nut (they are compressed enough when the spring can move between the top and bottom spring seats. Then a 17mm ring spanner to undo the nut while using an 8mm open spanner to stop the shaft turning (or, if you are really lucky you might get it off with a rattle gun).
    • You will now be able to lift the parcel shelf trim enough to get to the shock cover bolts; if you need to full remove the parcel shelf trim for some reason you also remove the escutcheons around the rear seat release and you will have to unplug the high stop light wiring from the boot. Next up is removal of the bracket; 6 nuts and a bolt Good news, you've finally got to the strut top! Remove the dust cover and the 3 shock mount nuts (perhaps leave 1 on lightly for now....) Same on the other side, but easier now you've done it all before
    • OK, so a bunch of trim needs to come off to get to the rear shock top mounts. Once the seat is out of the way, the plastic trim needs to come off. Remove 2 clips at the top then slide the trim towards the centre of the car to clear the lower clip Next you need to be able to lift the parcel shelf, which means you need to remove the mid dark trim around the door, and then the upper light trim above the parcel shelf. The mid trim has a clip in the middle to remove first, then lift the lowest trim off the top of the mid trim (unclips). At the top there is a hidden clip on the inner side to release first by pulling inwards, then the main clip releases by pulling the top towards the front of the car. The door seal comes off with the trim, just put them aside. The the lighter upper trim, this is easy to break to top clips so take it carefully. There is a hidden clip towards the bottom and another in the middle to release first by pulling inwards. Once they are out, there are 3 clips along the rear windscreen side of the panel that are hard to get under. This is what the rear of the panel looks like to assist:
