Hi every1, Ive recently bought a 34 gtt as my daily until i find my gtr.

I have noticed that under any load, 5th gear is starting to get resistance while trying to put it in.

It is okay when driving around town, but when on freeway its obvious. Doesnt happen when shifting down, only up in to 5th.

Had a similar issue with my 350z and had to get the box rebuilt and a new synchro put in to fix it (cost me $1500).

But my 350z would crunch hard, this doesnt. There is a slight noise but still slots in pretty easily.

Im assuming the synchro for 5th is on the way out, any1 have any suggestions where is the best place to take it and a idea on cost? I live in Rouse Hill in Sydney.

Still deciding whether to fix it or just try and live with it until it completely breaks.

Thanx in advance.

Rouse Hill? Call Unigroup Engineering, talk to Yavuz, tell him you need redline shockproof put though your gearbox for you and book it in. Mention that the club sent you and the price will be good.

Problem solved

Hello Sean, thanx for the reply. I believe the previous owner already changed the gearbox oil (not sure what was put in though) and problem still remains.

Dont know if its of relevance but car is putting out 250rwkw and has a Exedy heavy duty clutch with plenty of meat on it.

Thanx for the tip. I will call them on Monday morning.

I was researching the fault and found reference to redline shockproof in this thread - http://www.skylinesa...chros-5th-gear/

I also see the seller of the car made a post in there back in 2008 so looks like this faults been present on the car for a few years.

Are we sure that shockproof will make a difference? All other gears are fine. Its just 5th.

Thank u again i really appreciate ur help.

I haven't stripped a 25 box for a while but I think you can get rev and 5th off without pressing everything out of the centre plate.

From memory the genuine Nissan parts are not cheap it will probably cost between $400-$600 just in syncros, bearings, seals and oil etc. Just to do a quick repair.

Don't take this as gospel but it might be work asking the question if it can be done, good luck.

Its the common fix for crunchy boxes, well not a fix, more of a band aid. It costs a lot less than buying all the parts and fixing the box internals so most owners will put the oil in (nickname is smurf blood due to the colour) and live happily with it

Fantastic Steve, thanx again for the info.

I asked the seller and have gone through some service receipts. The box currently has Royal Purple synchromax in it.

Is this good quality? Or is it still worth changing to the shockproof stuff?

Royal Purple is good stuff.. its quite pricey too, if you can live with it till your next gearbox oil change do it then otherwise you can spend the $100 and try the smurfs blood to see if it makes it any better..

Thank u, I called Uni group today.

Yavuz isnt there for a few days but I spoke with one of the guys and he said he is not sure if the Redline will make a difference. And its $120 per litre and will need approx 2 litres of it + will cost $50 to put it in.

Might just live with it for now, until it gets worse.

Hello fatz, Thanx for the info.

Looking at the oil thats in it, the receipt says its 2.5 years old now.

And ive noticed that it only happens around 15 mins or more in to driving. When its cold it doesnt seem to do it.

And I have been doing gentle shifts, it still resists very slightly but no massive crunches.

Thinking about giving the shockproof a go because im thinking when oil gets warm, it thins out. Maybe this is why it doesnt happen when its cold?

Hi there, Is it weird that it only affects 5th?

Ive seen JustJap have a whole gallon of shockproof for $99. I might just grab some and do it myself.

I'd risk $100 and try it out and maybe get no result - just 2 feed curiousity really. But i cant afford to risk the $300 it would cost to take it 2 a shop to have done.

No it is very common to have 5th and rev play up first on many boxes as it is the furtest from the centre plate.

There are a few online stores you can get the redline oil from cheap per quart.

Hi, I am going to get some redline shockproof.

Noticed that there are 2 types - lightweight and heavy. Whats the difference?

Which one should I get for my car / problem and how many litres / quartz would I need? Thanx heaps.

Thanks for the clarification David. I was going to go with the heavy as it states its for problematic gear boxes and mine gives the slight crunch and resistance.

    • Nah that is not actually a lot. Just painting my GTR frontend and the little bits to make sideskirts/nismo flare pieces work correctly/fit on the sedan/mount up correctly came to about $7000. Is it a lot? Sure. None of this is economical. Economy would be shelling the car and buying a 2010 Corolla to commute in. The perspective of all of this is different.
    • I have the 2025 build re003s’ on my 06 XT Forester Turbo and I quite rate them for street wet and dry
    • I don't see any issues here. I've been saying all along this is a big job, the price reflects that.  When the car comes back perfect I'm sure it will feel like money well spent.
    • Remember, take original quote. Double it. Then add a bit more. It's how any project goes.
    • So, I started this repair and got as far as "fixing" the holes with some fibreglass. God all those years working on boats came back quickly. I decided I'd reach out to some rust guys just to see what they would say about it. I came across a guy about 40 mins away and went to see him. He said the windscreen needs to come out, that there might be some more bits around the windscreen and he'd quote them at the time. But his quote was $300 to remove and replace windscreen and $3k for the damage he can see. He said he could respray the roof for $1200 and the bonnet for another $800 (somebody has previously rattle canned it, its horrendous). This is $5300 + any small additional bits. It's a lot, I get that and the name of one of my fave youtube channels 'Not Economically Viable' comes to mind.  I'm not being financially rational, but I've taken him up on the quote. He's opening a new shop in November with more room, so we're waiting for that. I'll leave the currently missing headliner out until then. I'm looking forward to it being fixed and having the paint looking nice again (lots of clear coat issues on the roof too). / flame suit on.
