wheres all the nice cars ooo and where can i get 98 octane feul

Recommended Posts

Was talking to a local shell rep and he said they are trying to get optimax at a couple of servos from the pump, but he said that it looks like it wont happen until lrp is banned(these pumps will be converted to accept optimax).  Maybe a petition would help, even if one servo has lrp and the one up the road has optimax instead?

Was told the same thing by the Shell people up here as well! Was also told that because Shell and Caltas share deports (Caltas uses Shell in the Nth and Shell uses Caltas in the Sth) that it would be even less likely that Optimax will make it to Tas cause Shell didn't want to share "special blend". I rekon a petition would be a good idea also.

Why don't we get a bunch of performance car owner guys to Lease an old service station, and have 2 pumps running 98 octane or better fuel.. There's a business proposal...

I wouldn't say my car is performance at the moment though, so That counts me out :)

hmm which is why every servo in victoria has it??

me and phat_r33 went over a year ago today, down near evolution R and i swear there was 8 servos within a block each and everyone had optimax at 80 cents and all had at least 4 optimax bowsers

I've got a servo, unfortunatly it's leased out for the next 10yrs or so, and dosen't look like they will be getting 98 in a hurry, but at least I have a shed to play in!

Well, yesterday I wrote this e-mail to shell:

Hey there,

Just wanting to enquire about your optimax product. As a Tasmanian, I've found that in the last few years thre has been an significant increse in jap imports, etc. and as a result, the demand for your optimax fuel has incresed.

Has your company any plans for this fuel to be made avaliable at the pump in the near future? I'm sure that even if there was only one service station in the north and one in the south equipt with this fuel that it would sell really well(no one else sells 98 octane yet either).

Would a petition help to sway the decision, as there is in my opinion, demand for such fuel here.

As a reply I got this:

Dear Daniel,

Thank you for contacting Tell Shell Australia.

In reference to your enquiry, Shell Optimax, a high density/high octane petrol is currently only available in Victoria, New South Wales, ACT and Queensland. Optimax is the result of a unique refining process and currently can only be manufactured at our Geelong Refinery in Victoria. This means that there is limited volume. Shell wish to ensure that sites can be supplied consistently before expanding the distribution network. This causes us some logistics hurdles in providing the product to the rest of Australia.

Optimax's unique formulation also means its specifications are different than other unleaded fuels. Shell Australia always ensures we meet all State Government legislation, and this prevents us from selling Optimax in some parts of the country.

We are planning to complete many of the regional NSW sites and northern QLD as soon as feasible - if you wish to check where you can purchase Optimax before travelling, sites are listed on our web site www.shell.com.au or contact our Customer Service Centre on 1300 134 555. Please be assured that we are working towards having the fuel available nationally.

Kind regrads,

Tell Shell Australia.

I wonder what legislations would stop them from distributing the fuel from one state to another? Also I'm suprised they haven't started selling optimax in bulk as a replacement for premium, as its worth more per dollar?

i'll write to bp tonight. Good to see they answered all my questions too.... :headspin:

Hey there. I work for Mobil, and was talking to my boss today about getting the higher octane fuel in Tasmania. The biggest hurdle seems to be guaranteeing a reliable supply of it, and also storage. He seems to think that it may be here the end of this year of next year as a replacement for LRP, and they would use the old LRP storage tanks.

Caltex's Vortex GOLD Premium which is currently 96ron, is soon to go up to 98ron.

Got a mate that works for caltex and saw the paperwork. Wont be too long. Not sure if that includes hobart though, assume so.

Apparently there is an high powered r32gtr(Blue with carbon bonnet)getting around Hobart, which is running on barelled 98 octane fuel..don't know where he gets it from though.

Thats me i own the blue gtr. I run my car on 98 ron bp ultimate. I buy it in 200 litre drums.

    • It turns out that Setrab make a fan specifically for the oil cooler which is great and I've installed it with minimal swearing. I removed my 2x 12in push fans from the front of my aircon condenser and wired them into this. My main thermo fans kick on when I use the aircon anyway and would effectively already be working as puller fans through the condensor which is infront of the rad. The push fans (understandably) didn't really do much in the config they were previously in so now they're out. Now we're on to the "Oil fan doesn't really do much either!". Yes I'll duct it next if it does nothing in heavy use which it shouldn't. But hey, the object exists and fits great and is cool. Let me have this. The car is still in the "do my fittings leak oil now? do my wheels actually rub?" phase. I did a spirited drive on them and didn't hear or feel anything. Then I got back home and noticed there were grind marks on the inside of the rims, though I couldn't see where they were touching I got out the grinder and attacked the suspects. Note: I do not know how to use a grinder. Then I realised I had dragged my new rims across my concrete driveway before I did this drive. I didn't think I had damage at that time when I briefly looked...... but remembered this occurred after I did all the angle grinding. The grinding on the wheels in some very specific spots. It's not around the whole rim for example, which lines up with dragging it across concrete more than hitting a suspension component for even 1 full rotation. So everything is currently painted and taped up and I need to test it some more to see if it really IS rubbing, but from inside the car it doesn't feel like it is. In other news I attempted to do a before and after comparison of the heads/cam upgrade thing. Dynos lie, everything is in different measurements. Here is the data from the sandown back straight. Car go faster than before. Vroom vroom.
    • Here's my base ignition. +3 correction to redline when shooting water/meth which is always on. Looking at my old ignition table, I should be able to add 1-2 degree's next time I'm on the dyno.  Let me know your thoughts.
    • Given what I know now - same haha, but this was 12 years ago with second hand 740cc Nismo injectors in my S15 daily, I was too busy hunting elsewhere for the issue to even look at the injectors, running through some cleaner was a happy coincidence haha
    • Not a terrible idea. But if I ever had concerns that my injectors were sufficiently dirty to be causing me a problem, they would be out of the engine and onto the actual injector cleaner/testing bench.
    • Run some injector cleaner through it I had a similar issue that plagued me for months, even tried replacing the cat. If one or more injectors are blocked up the ecu sees ping so pulls timing and makes the tune rich overall, you'll see black smoke coming out of the exhaust and like me assume it's running rich but it could only be one or two cylinders  $10 bottle of injector cleaner and the next time I hit boost it pumped out a huge plume of black smoke, cleared the blockage and then ran great, if that's not the issue it's only a cheap thing to try haha
