hi all

having a recent issue with the RS Four S

i think it's the clutch on the way out, but wanted to double check

the problem seems to be most evident when cruising along the engine sounds like it's almost free revving (only a little bit, almost like what it sounds like on a cold start and the revs are higher than normal operating temp idle), but the revs on the tacho don't flare or anything

i tried the 4th gear start to see if it was slipping, but the engine died almost straight away???

the clutch friction point is well off the floor (like almost all the way out, and can't be adjusted closer to the floor), so i've been told the clutch is on its last legs

any thoughts?

many thanks all :)

Simple test.

Drive along at say 60-70kph in third. Put the throttle to the floor then jab the clutch (quick hit in and out immediately). If the revs flare and then stay there and you don't really accelerate, your clutch is boned. If it flares then falls back pretty quickly, then it's something else.

There's no way you'll get it going in 4th.

TBH it doesn't sound like a clutch problem. I'm not sure there is a problem at all, maybe you're just not used to what your car sounds like at constant RPM.

What Aaron says about giving it a boot and see what the revs do is right. I've just done the R30 clutch. At 60k in 5th if I planted the foot the revs went to 4-5000. but i never went any faster. clutch plate was down to the rivets.

yeah, not sure there is a problem but it seems to be only a recent change in noise (had the car for ~ 2 years)
