[R31][Silhouette]
Hey Guys, I've got a silvertop rb20det - I've asked this question before but never got a proper answer - does anyone know how to get the flutter (intercooler dose) noise instead of the stock 'pssshht' noise?? Has anyone experimented and got results? People have said 'bigger cooler, more boost' but I'm pretty certain that's not the case! Any ideas? Cheers Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/39443-flutter-noise-how/ Share on other sites

WHITE R32
the sound u can hear is called compressor surge or compressor stall.... what it is is compressed air trying to come out of the air inlet on your turbo and hence trying to stop the wheels spinning... mainly cause u are using a small bov or no bov or have it set too tight.... this causes excessive pressure on your turbo and can cause premature failure due to excessive load caused by the stalling..... most cars will have a bit which is ok but if it happens alot and at high boost levels id look into getting a better bov.... basically what im trying to say is if u want the noise tighten up your bov or block it off though i dont advise this cause of the afforementioned circumstances.... dunno if that helps or not.... cheers Jon Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/39443-flutter-noise-how/#findComment-801283 Share on other sites
moo_r32
what would you use to cover it up? Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/39443-flutter-noise-how/#findComment-801285 Share on other sites
MSPEC
Steel, just make a cut out, this is not dangerous btw! Been running my car like this for 2 years without a bov at 14psi! [R31][Silhouette]
Steel, just make a cut out, this is not dangerous btw! Been running my car like this for 2 years without a bov at 14psi! Hmm.. so do I remove the stock bov - by undoing those two bolts? then take that off and put a steel cut out in it's position? Is that right?? I've never removed the standard bov before - so don't really know what to expect! WHITE R32
this is a very debatable issue as to weather or not it causes dramas with bearing wear etc ..... but after spending 2k on a turbo id hate to have a warranty voided by just wanting a "cool" sound.... its not worth it in my eyes.... but having said that ca18det's dont have a bov std and neither do alot of opther cars... but rb's have them for a reason and ill keep mine that way... [R31][Silhouette]
Well considering my motor is stock... and running stock boost, I'm not really all that overly concerned about stuffing the turbo.. for now - I'll be very content with the 'cool' sound! MSPEC
yeah just take it off and then you need to block the two hoses up! Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/39443-flutter-noise-how/#findComment-801300 Share on other sites
jaqule
BelGarien has a nice flutter affect in his BOV , he has a HKS SSQ and he has just removed the fins , I think he said , you may have to ask what he did exactly but I do know that he still has his BOV on Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/39443-flutter-noise-how/#findComment-801301 Share on other sites
Pandaemonaeon
I found using different BOV's also had an effect. I'm running a Trust Type S at the moment, which will do it at low revs, no matter how soft it is set, yet when running a standard BOV, and another one (not sure what it was) there was none. jaqule
HKS one was also only at low revs , which if all you want is to get attention that's all you need , without having to worry about potential damage to the turbo My 2 % of 1 $ AU Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/39443-flutter-noise-how/#findComment-801312 Share on other sites

ferni
Didn't Denton do that steve and he blew his turbo Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/39443-flutter-noise-how/#findComment-801434 Share on other sites
MSPEC
Nope, though its probably best not to do it on a standard turbo. I dont really mind who does or does not do it. Fact is I have always done it, for no real reason but its been fine. Benny boy at Race Pace aint fussed either way so nor am I. WLD747
Flutter is cool, doesnt damage turbo as i have been doing it for a while as well. My blitz bov does this sound on low revs. Sound Cool. DentonR33
Yer i did it and my turbo went bang probably would have happened regardless though as was running more boost. I also did what steve did although i refitted the bov on top after i had put a steel plate over it. Then you have to block up two holes, a bolt works good on the smaller one and the end of a broom worked a treat on the other one. hehehehe weeeeeeeeeeee vromm chh chh chh chh Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/39443-flutter-noise-how/#findComment-801480 Share on other sites
