After a long a tiring read through that never ended RB30 thread up top, I thought I'd ask my questions directly as I have heard there are a few knowledgable people on this board when it comes to RB's and turbos.

I have an RB30DET freshly rebuilt using standard internals and 8.3:1 compression.

I hope to acheive 250rwkw at 15psi or below as well as have a streetable responsive car i.e. not too much of a laggy feel.

Am i asking too much?

At the moment I am choosing a turbo and the GT30 with the 0.82 exhaust A/R seems to be the go.

The motor is not going in a skyline though, rather a 1000kg or less 260Z so there are some concerns that the 0.82 will come on boost too violently for the light chassis. This has lead a few people to suggest the 1.06 exhaust AR.

Having spent more than a lot of new cars these days on this project and not really being close to finished, I am trying to kerb my spending and am playing with the idea of running an internal gate and using the standard exhaust manifold. With this in mind I have seen a mock up of the XR6 turbo for sale.

This is a GT3540 running and enlarged internal wastegate in a 1.06 AR exhaust housing. Will this be too big for my application and will the internal gate really hamper things too much?

.82 is too small small for a VL, yet for a 260z! :rant:

last 2 VLs i have put GT35/40s on with .82, ended up changing to a 1.06 with 1 month of road driving.

.82 are fun, but boost comes on too hard to quick. (again this comes down to the application of the car, .82 would be good for circuit work.)

The GT35R, R = Rebuildable/Repairable??

Theres no diffrence between a GT35 or a GT35R it terms of size. (both have same size compressor & Exhaust housing,/ can have same size housings fitted .63, .82, 1.06.)

Heres the confusing part:

The GT35R's flow 50lbs/ as per GCGs website (www.gcg.com.au) and are rated @ 700HP

BUT the GT35's flow 60lbs/ as per HPIAB (www.http://www.horsepowerinabox.com/HPIAB2/prod34.htm) and are rated @ 600HP

Whats the 100HP & $655.50 diffrence between these turbos? trim sizes? core?

Any opinions on internal gates?

calaisturbo.com has a few threads similar to this with only one epxerienced opinion also leaning toward 1.06 ex AR.

What about GT30 vs GT3540 arguments?

Dude y have u gone with an internal wastegate with your setup???

A nice turbo like that needs a nice 45mm external gate to get the full potential out of it.

The 'R' just means ball bearing in garretts definition... The lack of an 'R' is more than likely just lazyness rather than anything significant.

Dont go by GCG's site. Check out ray halls site he a more comprehensive specs page.

also the 700hp rating is for the top spec GT35R.. ie the 1.06 exh housing

I thought "GT" was Garrets definition of a Ball Bearing unit. e.g

GT35R = Ball bearing Garret, Repairable

T04R= Bush Bearing, Repairable

Someone has to know, i checked Rays site but i couldnt find GT specs...

GT35R = GT3540 as far as i know.

There is a lot of bad feeling towards going internally gated, what is the reason?

Another question and probably the most important is when these larger GT's make full boost and how suddenly?

please just open the garrett catalogue and look at the damn definitions :P

The "R" Denotes the 'rolling' element found in garrett single cartridge, dual ball bearing hi performance turbos.

GT35/40 is another naming convention made up by suppliers which has been discussed in the R33 RB30 conversion thread... Why bother arguing, just look up the catalogue and match it to what you are buying.

Internal gate is 'bad' as it wont be as effective at controlling boost as an external larger diameter wastegate would be... Sure you could do it if you really wanted to, but you would benefit from using these turbos the way they are meant to be run.. with custom manifolds and external wastegates

    • This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.
    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree.     • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
