Well the NVidia GTX680 has been released in answer to the AMD HD7970

I really enjoy the Anandtech reviews so further info here if you weren't aware:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/5699/nvidia-geforce-gtx-680-review/

Seems NVidia have indeed pulled a nice punch with the GTX680. I've been waiting to buy a new GPU since the end of last year as BF3 & Skyrim are struggling on MAX with my slightly older card these days.

I'm not set on buying a GTX680 just yet, but given they are priced the same (or near enough) as a HD7970 this might promt AMD to review their pricing structure given the NVidia card really gives them a good beating.

See what happens with pricing over the next 3-4 weeks i guess!

GTX680 - $700

HD7970 - $600

Hence I would envisage a price shift of large proportions given the NVidia cards really are much faster.

Problem is they are almost priced identically in the USA ($500)... But somehow the NVidia card has incurred a 40% price hike for "no apparent" reason with our dollar at parity.

I mean the reason is simply suppliers are gouging as always, of course they all deny that and cry poor

$500 I can justify as i usually spend around $400. $700 however I cannot.

I'll also look following to see if i can get a the lower model card and flash the BIOS or similar. I think a good spend on a GPU at the moment will hold off most games for the next 2 years, rather than having me update every 18months like I have been lately.

Overseas Group buy anyone??

Give us in the loop Ash as to what you decide regarding flashing etc and value for money.

I am stuck somewhat as my centurion case holds my 5870 ok and could hold a 6950 but nothing bigger, it appears that the new 7980 cards are quite large so i would have no luckj fitting it in. I cannot see though the size of the 680 if it is smaller i may have no other choice than to go back to nvidia.

Mind you my 5870 is still packing a good punch, but just like Clarkson i want more POWA!!

$700 video cards... reminds me of the time I spent that around that much to buy my Radeon 9700pro which at the time was the fastest GPU in the world (beating the Nvidia Ti 4600).

Now I can't even give it out for free...

  • 1 month later...

Yup i am thinking the same thing.

Will buy just before the end of financial year then claim tax back. As mentioned before i am limited to a card in my case 11 inches or less. so the 670 looks the goods as a nice jump from my old trusty 5870.

give it a month and hopefully the novelty has worn off and prices come down a bit. I am also waiting for the aftermarket reference cards like the MSI lightning editions.

    • Ha, well, it's been.... a bit of a journey. Things have taken much longer than I'd hoped. I'll probably put up a thread at some stage. Hopefully soon. The car's not done any kms since my update in June though, put it that way.
    • Here's the chart for fuel pressure vs. current draw, assuming your base fuel pressure is 3 bar and you run like 0.5bar boost on WOT, you should only momentarily hit 9amps here and there. (Ignore my prev post, I cannot read a chart these days it seems)
    • Those comp test results are not hideous. Whether they are accurate or not (ie, when that comp tester says 140 psi, is the real pressure120, 140 or 160?) is unknown to us. The state of the battery used to crank it over is unknown, etc etc. Many people around here would say that the absolute values and the spread are perfectly fine to just add boost and keep going. I personally would be happier with a narrower spread than that, but even the diff between 125 and 145 is not terrible. That one cylinder at 125 though, has probably copped some damage relative to the others. You should inspect the valves seeing as you've got it open. Do you know how to measure installed ring gaps? That, and an inspection of the rings themselves, is how you will determine whether they need to be replaced. If you're not good to do these things, take the block and the pistons and rings to a shop that is, and ask them for the go/no-go on them. Do the bores need a hone at all? If so, you might well be justified in getting some different pistons in order to get away from the ring supply problem. Whether you're happy to spend a lot more money right now, on more gear, rather than less money, but an amount that looks stupid given that you will only get a handful of rings in exchange for that money, is for you to decide.
    • also possibly backed up to my filler and shat down it! 🤣
    • Ok so i would love some advice here please, i purchased an R33 a few months back and its had a few mods done to the engine, its an RB25det running a Master ECU, 1200cc injectors, bigger turbo, oil cooler, oil filter relocation kit, Spool H-beam rods, acl/ross pistons. When i removed the motor from the vehicle (as its getting a respray) i thought i would compression test it and these are the following results. Cylinder 1-145psi, Cylinder 2-143psi, Cylinder 3-125psi, Cylinder 4-145psi, Cylinder 5-140psi, Cylinder 6-135psi this test was done with the motor on the ground and powering up the starter motor. I dropped the sump and found broken oil squirters on cylinder 3,5 and 6. I was told my rings are probably worn so i stripped the motor completely to get a new set of rings for it. The trouble is no one has these rings anywhere and they have to be custom made by Ross over in the states and will cost about $600+$200 delivery. My question is how can i tell if my rings are at fault and if they are still ok and is this price ok for a set of rings?
