just wondering what options is out there ...

i've seen mocal and tilton, but want to hear people's personal experiences on what is good and bad

those 2 brands seem to be made of plastic whilst there is one on ebay which has brass internals

any discussion would be much appreciated!

=)

You get what you pay for.

I use tilton pumps and have never had any problems with them. I did a fit out for a GTR recently using 4 of them (2x diffs, transfer and hollinger transmission).

They are not cheap but well worth the money.

The ones I'm using are far from plastic, the pump section is machined alloy with tools steel gears and the motor section is steel.

You want to use a pump that has a separate pump section which is sealed from the motor, tool steel gears and then decide if you want a constant flow pump or a triggered pump (they are different motor sections) triggered pumps has a capacitor start feature so they don't draw all the current away from ecu, injectors etc when they turn on and off constantly.

You want the oil sealed from the motor for a few reasons.

Less heat around the comuntator, brushes etc.

No chance of worn comuntator, brush etc getting into the diff oil

Serviceability you can replace parts not a whole unit

Tool steel gears are a bit noisier but there is massive amount of wear with brass gears which leaves brass in the diff oil.

Tool steel gears will probably outlast the car unless they ingest something.

hey brad!

thanks for that info!

do you know the model number of the pumps you use?

coz theres three models that tilton sell.

this is what tilton emailed me:

Pump P/N 40-527 is similiar to P/N 40-524, excpet for it has a continous duty motor. The pump head is plastic and the diaphragm is Buna rubber.

thats what i meant by plastic bits

I'll check on Monday and let you know.

Have you done any data logging to determine if you need a pump/cooler system?

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
