Hello guys,

I am new here, so not 100% sure if this is the right place for this post. But I was just wondering about your opinions on the RX-8.

I enjoy to plant my foot (Taking off from lights and such) and hit 100 as quick as possible. But I've read a few places RX-8 apparently don't like that?

What are your opinions on the RX-8? I personally think it looks good, inside and out and has a good acceleration (For stock)

If you are an RX-8 owner or recently were, what did you think of it?

If not an RX-8, what's a car close to the same, (Price, speed, looks etc)

Thanks in advance for any help. :)

-Justin

Seeing as this is a Skyline forum, I doubt there will be alot of opinions on the RX8. The seem to be an ok car, but if I was to go a rotary then I'd go for an RX7, as there is nothing quite like the kick of a turbo

You cut me real deep just now Paul.

As the resident rotary owner here I'm sure the guys wouldn't mind me pointing you towards http://www.perthrotary.com/ and http://www.ausrotary.com/ where you will no doubt get more help then from the RB boys.

Personally as far as RX's go I prefer FD and FC RX-7s. But a dumped RX-8 with a big brisgeport or even a crazy peripheral port would be pretty killer to see driving Perth's streets ;)

If I could give any advice from having mine I would say stay away from them..

The series ones have a missing oil injector toward the centre of the housing from memory and are notorious for blowing up if not driven 100% correctly... Some after 40k Kms... You have to allow ample warming up time, do not rev it too hard until oil temp is right up ie 20mins or so... And you have to make sure you red line it often to blow out any oil residue left inside the engine, also keep an eye and top up oil every 3 tanks of fuel or so... And it aint cheap at about 100 for 5l.. All this for a mere 170 extremely peaky kw (no much there until about 5k rpm)....

Having said all this it was a very nice car to drive, an incredible chassis... Mine was stock and sat perfectly through the bends, better than the gtr, well better than my gtr with stock suspension anyway... The engine really just let it down unfortunately...

And if your into straight line speed, there nothing short from putting a turbo kit on to the stock engine for decent power which will just increase engine issues (hi comp engine and turbo don't mix ha).. And cost approx 10-20k depending on what u do... So with that in mind I sold mine and put the money I would have spent turboing the car and bought a gtr!

Just my opinions anyways....

Haha, sooo pretty much exactly the same as any high performance motor? :P

RX7 FD and RX8 have 50/50 weight split, double wishbone suspension.

Rx8 is a bit dull without a the turbo charger.

RX7 FD is an awesome car, has the weight balance, double wishboan (alloy arms not steel like on RX8), and turbo torque.

The best thing about the rotary engine is how cheap they are to rebuild/refresh.

Here is some footage from Wanneroo raceway where we run a RX7 FD

    • Driveline vibration is resolved. I ended up loosening all my engine mount and trans mount bolts, giving it a good shake then retightening everything and it's gone... Let's just say I was surprised that fixed it.  I've been happily driving it around again but unfortunately put zero time into my direct port/constant pressure WMI setup. I'm on vacation next week, so I'll try and finalize it then.  On a different note, I spent all week fuel/ignition mapping 2x 216L V16 engines. Turbo's were burning glycol and we swapped them out for larger units. We also had planned emissions testing on site, so I figured I'd be there the same week to use their instrumentation and massage any emissions issues out if needed. This was a first for me. Fuel management is similar in certain ways to automotive (i.e air density as load variable) but very different in others. It's all PLC based and AFR's are controlled by air and not fuel. They use a control valve between the turbo and air manifold to control pressure which in turn controls AFR's. Due to this, target AFR tables supplied by the OEM are in pressures and not mass which really through me off. They use air pressure vs fuel pressure tables. I also relied on an O2 concentration sensor the emissions team had in the exhaust. Ignition timing was also all over the place and we were losing a fair bit of power. They're now happily sitting at 16-40BTDC depending on load. We were making about 1600kw at 900rpm at 90% load. Engines were running a lot smoother as well.
    • heh, aint no R32 ever meeting modern targa cage rules unless the driver is veeeery short OP, good luck with the sale, since its already in the land of freedom I'm sure you will find a good buyer.
    • meh, it was a good video, clear about the issue and how he dealt with it. A bit heavy on the RTV and very brave to put an RB in anything without rebuilding it first, but otherwise I thought it was good Dose, I'm not sure that having the pickup forward is a big issue; yes of course the oil could shift under brakes but the sump should never be empty enough for that to be a problem (unless you also have a higher volume oil pump, and that oil can't return from the head to the sump quickly enough)
