Hi guys, need some IC piping made up for my 32, is steel okay to use? is there any problems with the inside of the pipe rusting and and flakes of rust entering the motor?reason i ask this as im a tight ass and not that interested in using stainless steel (more expensive/altho non corrosive) just for the underbonnet bling factor,ideas on material type?

Thanks for that guys ^^^ was trying to get a factory (ive removed the aftermarket FMIC and gone back to factory SMIC as its a near stock engine)setup but havnt been able to get the piping even with a WTB ad. .

try ringing an import wreckers.

and may i ask why you are going back to the stock interheater?... i mean intercooler.

i believe the stock SMIC is the correct size/location for the car(as determined by the nissan engineers who designed it) have rung 1 wrecker in NSW(few good ones have closed in Perth) who wanted a arm and a leg for just the intercooler itself (no piping) im also of the opinion that the FMIC blocks a lot of cooling air that was originally meant for the radiator( and engine) and AC condensor, if i need to upgrade there is aftermarket SMIC units out there. . . the stock SMIC on my 34 doesnt seem to hold it back! :rolleyes: that bloody car will end up costing me my license if i dont keep a close eye on my speedo

Changing to a side mount intercooler wont stop you ramming the right foot into the ground.. lol.

Doing it now will probly make the front of your car look horrible. The bumper most likely would have had a lot shaved off it to fit the front mount.

damn engineers! all those years of school and study and they cant get a SMIC and turbo sizing correct! AND nissan has the hide to PAY them! :P the bumper reo(got another uncut reo) has been cut to the shithouse on my 32 by a previous owner (highly illegal by the way) to fit the FMIC, hence one of the reasons why ive gotten the SMIC back on it and the turbo has been swapped out to a 25 turbo so no problems there , if i have flow restrictions then the option of an aftermarket SMIC is there

They got the turbo and cooler right for what they intend the car to be, which is pretty much just a family car. Given that most people are running 50 to 70HP more than stock, I think it's pretty safe to say that Nissan didn't engineer the parts for this (given the turbo's tendancy to fail).

And as to the original question, the stock black intercooler piping is steel, so theres nothing wrong with using that, just paint it well or powedercoat it. I Kept the stock intercooler piping when i put my GT30 on my R33, and welded a small extension on it with steel. No rust or anything inside or out, and its been on there over a year.

Thats just with a good clean up, sand, bit of primer, and normal VHT gloss paint.

looks like the way to go then, cheap n effective, if it looks like heatsoak might become a problem then its very easy to make a intercooler water spray that is boost activated, picked up a 10 year old issue of ZOOM magazine at a bookshop that has a story that details how to do it

Only thing is, you want the intercooler wet before you come on boost. Thats why Evos and WRX have brake activated intercooler sprayers.

If your going to go through that setup, then might as well stay FMIC. More efficient, and more effective.

i see your point :yes: , a brake activated IC spray would be more effective than a boost activated spray, as the car wont ever see a race track where you would be on/off the brakes all the time then this wont work for me

    • This. A 3d wheel alignment is like $120...just take it to the shop. Since theres probably multiple adjustments that need to be made after changing something. Mine has front/rear lower arms, traction rods, tension rods, camber arms, toe arms, front upper arms, hicas kit, sway bars and coilovers. I measure from the edge of the bolt holes on the originals and set the same length on all the adjustable stuff to dial it as close as I could to OEM. Took it straight for alignment; it didnt feel right at all...after alignment, it feels perfect. Similarly i've just changed the springs on another car; and I still needed multiple adjustments to bring it back in spec.
    • A full Veilside kitted JZA80 Supra in Meriken park in Kobe city a few weeks back
    • Its a well known brand in New Zealand; its a rebrand of the Rhino RAV3.  I don't know what the wiring difference *is* between the rev.1 (installed about 15 years ago) and rev.2; but as you say I would think its reasonable that it uses the same immobiliser relay circuits. I had a look but couldnt see a similar harness; but didnt move things around since I didnt want to mess with it   It was one of AVS well known Authorised Installers; I spoke to AVS themselves about it but theyre unsure hence seeking advice more so from the skyline community who are more familiar with the actual car and its wiring. Im in Auckland; but the installer is on the other side of the city so hes very reluctant to come back to even look at it to confirm something isnt connected into the wrong wire.  I dont want to drop the name since they *did* do a really good job for the most part. Everything is very tidy and he fully replaced all the alarm wiring, all the sensors, the wiring to the door motors, installed a switch which was never installed in the first place...really happy with the alarm install itself..just not this one issue. We all make mistakes, if it is the alarm, I just want my fuel pump getting proper switched, fused, power as it was; without having to shell out for an auto electrician to switch a wire and tell me it was the alarm. 
    • Even with the piston at TDC there was room for it to drop, but I don't think it can drop fully into the cylinder, the problem you have is that you need something pushing against the valve to hold it up so you have enough room to put the new stem seal on and the spring etc.  I used compressed air only because putting rope in the cylinder seemed a bit risky to me, I know people have done it countless times before like this. Overall it's a pain in the ass job. Honestly you'd probably be better off taking the head off because the risk of dropping something in the engine and the finicky-ness of it all is very stressful. If you are going to attempt it though i 10000% recommend a 36050 valve spring/keeper tool. I had both the traditional lever type and after doing 1 cylinder it was absolute pain to get those valve keepers in place, even with 2 people. That 36050 is amazing, you do have to push hard to get them in place but it works perfectly almost every time. Back to my actual issue I think my engine is just tired and old and the rings have gone bad. The comp numbers (cold, no oil) were: Cyl 1 -129psi Cyl 2 - 133psi Cyl 3 - 138psi Cyl 4 - 137psi Cyl 5 - 157psi Cyl 6 - 142psi   Cylinder 5 and 6 having the most carbon on them.
    • Who did you have do the installation? I actually know someone who is VERY familiar with the AVS gear. The main point of contact though would be your installer.   Where are you based in NZ?
