Josheh
Good day fellow skyline owners. So here's the thing, I reside in Newcastle and have just purchased a modified r33 from Sydney and the last owner asked what my intentions for the car were. When I said daily driver, he told me that the first thing I'd want to do is invest in iridium or cheap plugs as the current ones are racing plugs and will cause the car to take 10-15 minutes to actually start up (kick over). This is difinitely the case but I just want to confirm that racing plugs are the real cause / actually have that affect? 34GeeTeeTee
Errrr nope Sounds more like a tune issue or similar! Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/405354-skyline-cold-start-issue-due-to-racing-spark-plugs-true-false/#findComment-6455144 Share on other sites
Moodles2
Racing plugs were used as an excuse to cover why it's really taking 10-15minutes to startup. 34GeeTeeTee
Hey Josh, We have a small group of guys in Newcastle that are starting to meet up etc.... Maybe come along to one of our meets and we can have a look at it for you and see if we can help you out with the drama? As long as you are not a douche bag street racer that wants to do skids to prove yourself We already had one of those that will now be asked to GTFO if the next meet.... Here is the local section - http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/topic/402383-s-a-u-n-e-w-c-a-s-t-l-e/page__st__0 Our last meet up - http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/topic/404240-newcastle-meet-up-wrap-up-thread/ Feel free to ask us any questions, we will try help Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/405354-skyline-cold-start-issue-due-to-racing-spark-plugs-true-false/#findComment-6455173 Share on other sites
Got a Pulsar
Spend $20 - $30 on some NGK copper plugs. Probably won't help but it's only $30 and you've got new plugs! Josheh
Thanks for all the advice guys! That's most frustrating if i have been lied to. He said something along the lines of being racing spark plugs, unlike normal plugs, they need to warm up before they perform properly and once warmed up the car starts fine every time. Its a pain really. There is a bit of exhaust smoke too, which is slightly troubling. The last owner recommended 15/30 oil, but apparently that's hard to come by so i bought 10/30 oil instead. I should probably of done a full oil change rather then just a top up though... Meh! I will most definitely want to join in on the cruise's etc. I work most nights though, making it hard Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/405354-skyline-cold-start-issue-due-to-racing-spark-plugs-true-false/#findComment-6455286 Share on other sites
34GeeTeeTee
Its probably excess fuel smoke from the plugs being fouled up etc.... Probably just gotta do the basics mate like a full service (plugs, filters etc) and check the O2 sensor and stuff.... For any basic mechanical just use a trusted mechanic, TRG loves his imports so maybe see him.... For any tuning etc you may need then i'd speak to Jez on the coast (we can give you contact details) but just a friendly word of advice, there is a shop up here that calls themselves a "performance workshop" but i would trust a wrecker before using them again (I cant say on a public forum who, but happy to steer you away from them since all the bad dealings i had)... Our cruises will be during the day, so you should be fine, keep an eye on the local threads and flick the guys a wave if you see them! DVS JEZ
Hey guys, It is possible to foul plugs if they are indeed a race plug ie really cold heat range like an 8 or colder. There is absolutely no need for these cold plugs to be used unless a full blown circuit race car. What ecu and mods ? Josheh
Haha fair call... I'll keep TRG in mind. Got my last service on my lancer done there so that's a bonus. I just need to work out if its a service or a tune up that's required then i guess... so plugging my laptop into the aftermarket computer and making changes won't really make a difference in the poor start up then i take it? Josheh
I see... can i download the software somewhere for my laptop so i can tune it myself? And are there presets you can select if you don't wish to customize it yourself? 34GeeTeeTee
Unless you have the proper equipment and plenty of experience i would advise against self tuning... Your better off taking it to a tuner to look at... Moodles2
The last owner recommended 15/30 oil, but apparently that's hard to come by so i bought 10/30 oil instead 15w30 doesn't exist (15w50 does though, 15w60 too), and 10w30 is way too thin. Dump the oil immediately and put a 5w-40 or 10w-40. If the previous owner did indeed recommend 15w50 or 15w60 then the engine might have problems and those were used to mask the problems before sale (lack of compression, rings gone etc).
