OK yes I know I have an N/A atm, but I have big plans which include an RB25DET and a TD06. Anyways, I'm also subscribed onto the OzDat mailing list, and the topic of buying/making a cheap surge tanks came up.

And this link was posted as a response from one of the members

http://www.sdsefi.com/techsurge.htm

Now, my question is this:

How much does a surgetank improve the performance of an R32 with an RB25DET with say..

a) GTR fuel pump and rails

B) Bosch 440 fuel pump n GTR rails

c) GTR fuel pump and RB25 rails with larger injectors (is this possible?)

also how does the location of a surgetank affect its performance, as I know having a surge tank in your engine bay in Australia is a big no-no due to safety reasons (no fuel allowed to collect in the engine bay), so is having it in the boot any better than just running it from the stock fuel tank? Or can you get away with it by disguising it at an oil catch tank or a fluid reservoir (by not making it shiny bling bling obvious)?

Im sure you understand how a tanks works etc... and it will just stop surge in each of your scenarios.

I dont think the scenarios affect the fact that a surge tank will help you if your intend to hit the track.

I dont understand:

so is having it in the boot any better than just running it from the stock fuel tank?

Ie, did you mean running the surge tank in your actual fuel tank?

Or

having a surge tank in the boot, as opposed to not having one at all?

The location wont affect it i wouldnt imagine.

And no, dont run it in the engine bay, keep it semi legal for your own safety and other roads users'

BTW, i'd go a Bosch M/S pump, and 550cc injectors that bolt into the stock 25 rail

No fuss with GTR rails and stuff.

that setup u reccomended is the one you have in you're car eh Ash? If so I rikey that idea velly velly much.

And what I meant was... does having the surge tank in the boot defy the purpose of having a surge tank at all? ie would you be better of having no surge tank and just using the stock system?

More than a performance boost I'm looking to make the engine as efficient as possible with the upgraded parts (higher volume injectors n pump, bfo turbo n all). So does having a surge tank help in this instance? Or has nissan's engineering dept already thought ahead and made fitting a surge tank into a 1993 R32 a waste of time?

the BTW bit?

Yeah man, it's all bolt in stuff you can get from Japan

No need to change rails or anything. That's added effort not required.

No, having it in the boot doesnt defy the purpose.

It doesnt matter so much where it's located.

It's too hard to explain myself when typing... I'll explain in person on Sat at the meet. :D

haha sounds good. also, higher flowing braided lines? helpful or not with fuel pumps?

I should be asking my old man this stuff lol he's a hose and valve advisor/expert for the Sydney city council and lectures on mech eng at tafe.

Here is a setup from another country, not Australia cause that would be illegal.

Basically it stops you from leaning out your nice expensive new engine when your fuel is splooshed off to one side around Phillip Island.

p.s. Ummm I mean, errr another track, not in Australia

    • Just trying to get my head around this. At 5psi of boost, you turn on your wmi pump, and then you're using a 3000cc injector, to allow flow upto the actual engine, where you have your 6x200cc injectors and a 500cc injector. If the above is correct, what advantage are you obtaining by having the 3000cc injector blocking flow, is this just incase a line breaks between that injector and the motor you can stop flow immediately? Or are the 6x200cc and 500cc less injectors and just spray nozzle?
    • Welcome! New member myself, but I had an R33 back in 2002. Best advice I could give, based on my experience: if you're running the factory turbo, be very conservative with boost. I made the mistake of just fiddling around with the boost controller and cranking the boost for fun, and the end result was my intake pipes popping off frequently from the constant deluge of oil that was being blown into the recirc by the stressed-out turbo, which itself was siphoning oil from the engine and farting it out both sides of its centre bearing (or something to that effect). If I could do it all again, I would have gotten a new turbo and had a tune dialled in professionally and then just left it alone! Funny you mention the metal shavings in the gearbox, as I had the same thing - the probe plug (magnetic drain plug, essentially) would come out caked with shavings. At least it was doing its job. Not sure if that's just sacrificial wear and part of the deal, or if my gearbox was shagged, but I wasn't abusing it. Enjoy the R33 - they're a dying breed, and if they weren't $35k+ on CarSales in Queensland, I might have picked up one of those again, instead of the 370GT I own now (though I'm loving the 370GT, that big 3.7L V6 just hits different).
    • Howdy folks. I owned an R33 back in 2002, which was thoroughly beyond my capacity (financially speaking) to maintain/insure, so we parted ways in 2004. Fast forward 21 years (to literally yesterday, in fact) and I'm now the proud owner of a 2007 V36 370GT. I'm happily surprised by how much power the VQ37VHR makes, compared to the RB25DET, considering the latter is turbocharged. I had planned to add a turbo at some point but I'm on the fence about whether I'll even need it (though I do love the sudden onset of extra torque). Any other 370GT owners around the traps, I'd love to hear about your experiences with this car (good and bad).
    • Perhaps the answer is... more jacks!* *proper jacks must be used.
    • I NEVER think about using a scissor jack unless there is absolutely no other alternative. f**king things are dangerous, annoying and stupid.
