Hi All,

Merry Xmas to all

Been searching around and have yet to find any info on what im trying to achieve

i own a R34 GTT and the previous owner told me the thermo fan had been disconnected at some stage by the first australian owner after the car was imported (im the 3rd owner) , saying the car never got hot enough to need it , well maybe they were not as spirited in the seat as i am :) cause it got hot, so ive changed over to a bigger alloy radiator and taken out the original thermo which seems fine no movement in the unit and spins fine

ive asked the previous owner if he knew exactly what was done to disconnect it but he doesnt know?

the fuses are all in japanese so i got no idea there?

the thermo all seemed connected when i removed it everything seemed stock

there is another connection below which comes out from near the horn which i took a picture of but doesnt connect to thermo

all i want to do is find out what has been done to stop thermo kicking in and fix it

and either replace thermo or use original , would be nice to have it on a switch also,

seemed simple enough to me but i got no idea about wiring and electrical side of things and the fuses all being in jap is just great :)

so anyone got some suggestions or ideas on whats been done and how i can fix it?

also is there a thermo fuse?

an english translation for all the fuses?

how to test original thermo ?

I don't know R34's well, but all Skylines have a thermofan infront of the aircon condensor (looks like a radiator). This will switch on automatically when either the aircon is on, or the coolant temperature reaches 95C+ (approx).

@Moodles2 yeah thats the fan ive removed which no longer switches on but seems in fine working order

@mad82 the car shat two heater cores in a matter of months as soon as i flushed the system? which to me sez it was a build up of shit holding the first core together

but then doesnt explain why it did another apart from the coolant being too hot from the old radiator?

the thermo or over temp as you call it has never kicked in? at least ive never noticed it, and when the car gets hot it needs to be driven lightly to bring back down if you stop it and sit ,it will get hotter or stay the same ,ive replaed the radiator now with a massive 56mm alloy unit :yes: and bypassed the heater core and it seems fine ,took the car for a good drive down highway all was fine, sat it for 10mins running and did not get hot, but i still want a thermo for hot qld track days :rolleyes:

will look at getting the original thermo tested and wired in on a switch, i test fitted a massive 16" thermo and while it did fit (only just) its just too big

if i have to replace it i will just go 10" for easy fit ,

so no one knows anything about the wiring?

at speed (such as on a track day) having the thermo there won't do much good. it may even restrict the airflow a little bit. plenty of race cars don't run fans at all as they just rely on the air at speed to keep things cool

funny you say that bro cause i was just looking into that, the engine/clutch fan seems to work a treat so with the big alloy number and the engine fan i think it should all be sweet

    • It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about. Reliability of everything in a 34 drops MASSIVELY above the 300kw mark. Keeping everything going great at beyond that value will cost ten times the $. Clutches become shit, gearboxes (and engines/bottom ends) become consumable, traction becomes crap. The good news is looking legalish/actually being legal is slighly under the 300kw mark. I would make the assumption you want to ditch the stock plenum too and want to go a front facing unit of some description due to the cross flow. Do the bends on a return flow hurt? Not really. A couple of bends do make a difference but not nearly as much in a forced induction situation. Add 1psi of boost to overcome it. Nobody has ever gone and done a track session monitoring IAT then done a different session on a different intercooler and monitored IAT to see the difference here. All of the benefits here are likely in the "My engine is a forged consumable that I drive once a year because it needs a rebuild every year which takes 9 months of the year to complete" territory. It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about with this car.
    • By "reverse flow", do you mean "return flow"? Being the IC having a return pipe back behind the bumper reo, or similar? If so... I am currently making ~250 rwkW on a Neo at ~17-18 psi. With a return flow. There's nothing to indicate that it is costing me a lot of power at this level, and I would be surprised if I could not push it harder. True, I have not measured pressure drop across it or IAT changes, but the car does not seem upset about it in any way. I won't be bothering to look into it unless it starts giving trouble or doesn't respond to boost increases when I next put it on the dyno. FWIW, it was tuned with the boost controller off, so achieving ~15-16 psi on the wastegate spring alone, and it is noticeably quicker with the boost controller on and yielding a couple of extra pounds. Hence why I think it is doing OK. So, no, I would not arbitrarily say that return flows are restrictive. Yes, they are certainly restrictive if you're aiming for higher power levels. But I also think that the happy place for a street car is <300 rwkW anyway, so I'm not going to be aiming for power levels that would require me to change the inlet pipework. My car looks very stock, even though everything is different. The turbo and inlet pipes all look stock and run in the stock locations, The airbox looks stock (apart from the inlet being opened up). The turbo looks stock, because it's in the stock location, is the stock housings and can't really be seen anyway. It makes enough power to be good to drive, but won't raise eyebrows if I ever f**k up enough for the cops to lift the bonnet.
    • There is a guy who said he can weld me piping without having to cut chassis, maybe I do that ? Or do I just go reverse flow but isn’t reverse flow very limited once again? 
    • I haven’t yet cut the chassis, maybe I switch to a reverse flow. I’ve got the Intercooler mounted as I already had it but not cut yet. Might have to speak to an engineer 
    • Yes that’s another issue, I always have a front mount, plus will be turbo plus intake will big hasstle. I’ve been told if it looks stock they’re fine with it by a couple others who have done it ahahaha.    I know @Kinkstaah said the stock gtt airbox is limiting but I might just have to do that to avoid a defect so it atleast looks legit. Or an enclosed pod so it’s hidden away and feed air from the snorkel and below Intercooler holes like kinstaah mentioned. Hmm what to do
