Hey all,

It's been a long time but I am back into this section of the universe. Had an L20ET powered R30 hatch about 9 years ago, followed on by a 32 GTS-t.
Just picked up another R30, this time with an RB20DET in it.A few of you may recognise it from years ago.
Anyway, I plan to keep a log of what happens with this car as I don't plan to ever get rid of it.

Crappy phone pic > https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_DpuEtI-j58WC12enlPY1dZaTQ/edit?usp=sharing

Current mods are as follows:
R32 RB20DET
HR31 front suspension
Z31 rear end
DR30 front seats, tail lights and dash
Big FMIC (bit well hidden which I like)
3" exhaust
Bosch 040 or 044 pump - haven't investigated but its loud
Resprayed in R33 GT-R silver a while ago (think its K4)

Think that's about it

Plans I have for it (extremely slow due to a fresh mortgage)

Source the lower trim piece below the tail lights (the one I found was dented up)
R200 LSD
Coil overs (probably)
Wide SSR or similar rims
R32 4 pot brakes (already have them). Apparently a straight swap but we will see how that goes
Get the DR tacho working with the RB20 - has anyone done this?
Sort out the steering - has a clunk when about 1/3 from full lock and changing direction either way (any ideas?)
Ditch the DR seats (drivers is in poor condition) and fit some old school recaros
Clean up the rest of the interior. It has had gauges screwed into the dash, about six cracks along the top of the dash, half a power window conversion (I will just change back to winders). Need a lot of interior bits in grey.
Change the front and rear bumpers to the later type. I have a rear bumper in good condition sitting in the shed. Anyone done this, and does it work or will I need to change the front 1/4 panels as well?
Fill in the hole on the right hand side for the muffler outlet
Front strut bar (don't know how clearance over the RB will go)
Then some minor mods to the RB20 - R33 or 34 turbo, coil packs if needed but they are coping well at stock boost

Will keep everyone posted and if anyone can help out with my questions or parts that will be awesome.

Great to be back in R30 world :)

Nice start I am in the middle of getting my tacho working with a Rb25, I will let you know when it sorted.

I have a few gery trims in stock but mine is brown so let me know what you need.

R31 front sway bar is a good upgrade as well

happy to help just ask

Cheers Steve,

Will go through the whole car and see what interior bits I need, pretty much everything looks ratty.

Will try and get a photo of my intercooler tonight. Air conditioning condenser is no longer there (summer fun) so there is heaps of room between the bumper and radiator.

Also found a pic of my old hatch.

Forgot to take measurements of my intercooler today but took a couple of pics. Not too much to see, inlet and outlet on the same side which is a good setup.

Still have a lot of tidying up to do in the engine bay. Little bits of rust in the usual area at the strut towers, underneath the battery too but that will be an easy one.

nice man!

i miss my rb20, best engine !!

ive tried numerous was to get tacho working w rb, and had 3 different auto elects try, but no go.. im keen to know if someone can figure it out.

i was just going to go all autometer, when i got some spare $

Cheers ydr30, yours looks insane!

Yeah I can't seem to find much info on converting the tacho signal, have read a bit about using a resistor but no idea if it will work or not. Aftermarket seems to be the go but I will leave that until I have the thing registered with the RB20.

Previous owner gave me a set of R32 GTS-t callipers. Anyone know if these are a straight fit on the HR31 struts, using the HR31 rotors? Not sure on the differences between HR31 and R32 rotors...

cheers man,

yea tried resistors, tried modified relay tried 6cyl tacho, nothing...

32 calipers will fit, but u need to use 32 rotors aswell, just redrill to 4 stud, my mate has the same on his hr31, and u need to remove the olive in the caliper, hope it helps

Ah sweet thanks.

Will measure up the rotors that are on there now as it appears to be hr struts and possibly rotors but some pathetic little calipers. Bummer about the tacho, might have to try and rip the guts of of a 32 tacho and make it work. Hmmm

Got a little bit busy yesterday arvo.

R32 GTS-t calipers and R33 GTS rotors. Just need some pads and should be right to go.

Thanks to ydr030 for the tip on removing the olive, was a simple swap.

R33 GTS discs, 280mm X26mm (exactly the same as R32 GTS-t but already drilled as 4 stud). Got them brand new for just over $100 delivered, on sale on eBay through RDA. All of it fit like a glove

Well unfortunately I have to part with this car after only having it for a short time :(

I have another project taking over my whole shed which I really want to get a move on with so the R30 will need to go to fund that.

Link to for sale thread here.

    • Just wanted to unearth this and post my baby with the new front ❤️😝 Took her to my wedding rehearsal today. Next up is getting wide skirts (after wedding)
    • Yea, that is what I was getting at in my ramblings too. The nismo one actually is a 1.5 way and a 1 way. They don't do a *2* way because a true *2* way would have equal ramp angles. Or is that a true 1.5 way? Realistically I think a "1.5 way" does not actually exist. A diff can either lock in two directions or one. It also doesn't help that a LOT of people in Australia speak about 1.5 way diffs are referring to their 1 way diff.
    • Well, the trouble with that ^^ is: The configuration shown is absolutely a 1-way, not a 1.5-way. There is no way that a 1.5-way can be said to offer LSD action only on acceleration. If Nismo cannot get that right, then it is impossible to believe their documentation. That ^ is not a 1.5 way setup. That is a 1-way.   And so now I have allowed all doubts to flourish and have gone back to look at the MotoIQ video. I originally made the mistake of believing him when he said "this is a 1.5-way" at the ~6:10 mark. Because what he did was take the gear assembly out of the 2-way opening and just rotate it one place to the left to drop it into the 1-way opening. When he dropped it in there, the cam was "backwards" compared to the correct orientation shown in all other photos of that config. The flat shold have been facing the 1° ramp side of the opening, not the 55° ramp side. And I thought, "gee that's cute", but I was concerned at the time, when he put the other ring back on, that the gap between the rings looked like it was wider then in the 2-way config. And then I said a lot of things in my long post on Tuesday that could only make sense if the guy from MotoIQ was correct about what he'd done. BUT... I have now done my homework. I grabbed a frame of the video with the 2-way config, and then grabbed another with the "1.5-way" config, snipped out the cam and opening of that frame and just pasted it direct on top of the 2-way config. I scaled it so that the triangular opening was almost exactly the same height in both. AND.... the gap between the plates is wider with the cam installed in the triangualr opening backwards. That is.... it cannot go together that way. There would be massive force on the plates all the time, if you could even reassemble it.  So, My statement on the matter? The Nismo diff is actually only a 2-way and 1-way. There is no 1.5-way option in it, regardless of what they say. Here's a photo of a real 1.5-way ramp opening from Cusco (along with the 1 way option). And the full set of 1 through 2 way options from their racing diff, which is not same-same as what we'd typically be using, but...the cams work the same. A little blurry, but it comes from this Cusco doc, which is quite helpful. AND.... Cusco do in fact do what I suggested would be sensible, which is to have rings that do 1 and 1.5, and 1.5 and 2. Separately.
    • Welcome Adam. Car looks great!
