Hey Guys,

I thought instead of going off topic in the selling thread, I'd thought I'd create my own.

So after a few SAU members giving their wisdom and a few of my mates we've tried the following.

1. Cleaned Airflow

2. Lowered boost (also raised)

3. changed coilpacks

4. restarted ECU

5. Spark plugs replaced as of 3 weeks ago*

6. Did everything else I could think of (cleaned bits and pieces)

The issue is still there; spluttering at 3,000-4,000 RPM.

On a few of the tests (low boost) I was getting the following response from the engine. 2nd gear take off

4,000 RPM; splutter inaitated,

4,000-4,500 RPM engine was fine up until 6,000 RPM (Gear change).

3rd gear was a little better (Not spluttering until 4,500-5,000.

*Spoke to my friend a moment ago, and he found this on the Tubes.

(same issue)

The result was not using the correct spark plug. The guy who I bought the car off did some testings to fix the issue and said he changed the plugs and belt (+ other things). I'm guessing he put in the wrong plugs or something.

So, for my next adventure - I will be buying some plugs and testing them. Fingers cross this is what fixes it.

Will post update and possibly a videos.

I'd like to give a huge shoutout to Rob for helping me in person with supplying parts and giving advice over the phone whilst I was leaning over the bonnet and a shoutout to Brad for his knowledge in the other thread / via PM. Also, a shoutout to everyone else on SAU for giving their 2cents; everyone said it was sparkplugs from the start, but given that they had been changed before purchase, I thought it wasn't the issue.

I haven't touched the plugs yet.

They're fairly cheap nowadays Rob, cheers though !

I'll have to take your coilpacks back out and the plugs if it fixes the issue. So, I'll spend some dollar and test it.

Spark plugs were the first suggestions by many, but disregarded due to them being new (apparently) whether or not they are the correct plugs is unknown. So, I'll buy them, try them and hope it works. I want this problem solved finally :(

When I get home from work I'll be working on it with my brother in law and hopefully when I swing by again Rob, I can return your parts. If the plugs fail, may have to hook it up to your snazy computer.

Oh, they don't come as 0.8?

(I didn't buy these plugs, they were purchased a week before me buying the skyline).

When you refer to "gapping" is that something I purchase or a garage job?

(I'm still learning lots about cars :O)

Basically you bend the metal bit at the end to have a smaller gap .8 is what dielines use. All you need is a tool to change the gap and you are all good.

Its really easy. I did mine by getting a metal plate gaping tool and gently tapping them on a brick. But i would recommend one of those round tools if anyone has one.

Nice work man. Looks like you've already done quite a bit of trouble-shooting!

The video you linked definitely doesn't sound like engine cut due to overboosting, so I'm going to jump on the spark plug bandwagon too! :P

Be sure to keep us updated and I hope you get it sorted out.

also jeremy are you north or south side? Either way im south and Rob (Not a pulsar) is north and im sure he would be willing to lend a hand (I usually offer a case of beer) to do it. its literally a 5 minute job (Max).

Yep we are both in Dunlop.

Seriously Jeremy, I have my old plugs, pre gapped from factory to 0.8 and they work fine.

You can have them for FREE!!!

NGK BC.........6 BLAH Can't remember the number but they are the correct ones and they work.

I can safetly say, if it ever happens again or happens to someone else, I can point them in the right direction ! It's a pain in the bum when trying to kick it, or even go for the famous "Form One Lanes" at the lights):

lol No worries Jeremy, but the shoutout was already in your 1st post i think! ;P

Glad you thought I could help, even if it didn't really solve your issue.

On another note, do you have any pics of your car somewhere?

*EDIT* never mind just saw your intro thread from the other day, shame about repairs needed but I love the colour! It'll be hard to miss you driving around in this!

And a belated welcome to you!

Haha, yeah, I forgot the shoutout was for Anthony :(

I only got carsales pic ): Which will be updated hopefully tonight.

You can hear me coming AND see me coming ! (Exhaust is at 99 dB)

Depends with future projects, but I was thinking a matte black spray. I haven't seen any in Canberra (Whether or not that's a good or bad thing).

Just a thought - I haven't read anywhere (that I noticed) whether your car is a series 1 or series 2. Which is it?

A series 2 (1.5). I buy series 2 parts.

    • Hi all, considering clutch upgrade to support 1130 engine hp from 1650cc injectors on e50 at 85% duty cycle (1650 x (11.85/14.7) x 85%). Narrows down to these three as they can be converted to use gm 26 spline input shaft if I ever want to use transmission with that input shaft (orc1000f and r3c easy/cheap just change center hub; tr2cd pricier must change clutch discs). Pricing orc1000f similar to tr2cd, r3c about usd 200 pricier. Orc1000f triple plate 200mm. Tr2cd twin plate 215mm. R3c triple plate 215mm. Claimed max torque : orc 1000f 723 lbs ft; tr2cd 800 lbs ft; r3c 1100 lbs ft. Why orc1000f triple plate but claims lower max torque vs tr2cd twins? Is orc1000f underrated? Any info maxing out these clutches? Info on street/traffic driveability/pedal feel? Thank you for any info on them.
    • Some troubleshooting, connect up a timing light/gun with a proper ignition lead on coil 1. Hold the revs at 4~4500rpm and see if your timing is all over the shop, scattering off its tits. If so, there's a high chance your CAS is fked. But I read you have a Link ECU ready to go in, why not just skip all this and put that in - will make troubleshooting so much easier.
    • Misfires when the car is fully warm are generally attributed to the coils (and/or the igniter, on cars with a separate igniter). They can stop working properly when they get hot for a number of reasons. Either electric/electronic, or from thermal expansion opening up gaps and allowing HV leakage. Seeing as you have replaced the coils, that could/should rule them out. But I wouldn't always assume so. Were the coils genuine? Or is there a chance you have bought some counterfeit Chinesium shit? Then we're back onto loom connections. They can fail when warm/hot for the same reasons. Inspections, cleaning of contact surfaces, ensuring that terminals are fully inserted, etc etc, are all justified. The same (heat effects) holds true for the other electrics and their connectors. AFM & CAS, primarily. If you try that Chinesium AFM, drive it around on low load until it is properly hot, but do'nt give it more load than you have to, except when you need to see if it will still miss. I'm dead serious about the untrustworthiness of the calibration of those copy AFMs. Injectors are unlikely to get hot unless the fuel is coming back around hot. You could try squirting them with compressed air or freeze spray to cool them back down to see if they are maybe the cause.
    • Alright, all the plugs looks good. Noticed that it starts to get bad when the car is up to temp, that's when things starts to misfire hard. next to do is Injector cleaning and such. Got in touch with a shop to do work on the injectors next Monday also help on diagnosis.
