There is 3 rounds in 2013

14th April 2013

30th June 2013

15th Sept 2013

To be run in conjunction with MRA - Sports Sedans this year.

Sunday 3 race program cost $230 ea - (passbook/logbook $20, Series Registration $30 - one off annual).

Private practice may be available Saturday to be confirmed - at Track cost (TBA)

All at Wakefield Park for this year, looking at one of four rounds at Winton (2014) rest at Wakefield Park.

For eligable cars - there will be on offer, various fuel cards @ $25 - $50, and same vouchers from various other supporters ie gift cards. Theses bonuses will be presented to ie best and fairest drive, best team, best fun factor team, best presented car etc.

Still working on the details - contact me Stuart Inwood email [email protected] for interest or ideas.

Entries to be lodged under MRA Sports Sedans - Wakefield Park for 14th April -CAMs log book & licence are fine for first round entered.

So your running a AASA version of the kuhmo series??

Are you planning to check eligibility via Supercar history or is it open to any "touring car"

Example could a New Zealand VY touring car run?

I might actually be keen to bring my VY GRM chassis to a round if it takes off.

Are engines required to be period for the car or free?

So would a 2012 spec 888 engine in a VY be eligible?

Wouldn't want to go back to the old 18deg chev.

If you can send me draft of the regs or what your thinking of for regs Stuart that'd be great.

I've got a couple of early cars that could be run but myself and the owners wouldn't want to devalue them by changing away from V8 touring regs by much if anything.

Hi Brad,

Will get futher regs when they are sorted, but firstly any touring car pre the 31st December 2002 is welcome, maximum 5ltr - engine block must be that of vehicle manufacturer.

The main plan is to get older, unchanged cars back onto the track - hence the reason we are not replacing our engine in Falcon with a 6ltr, thoughts crossed my mind for Sports Sedans but did not want to do cage or any redesigns to car, so keeping 5lt as per SBR, hence not devalueing car. But be able to afford entry fee and have good clean racing. Should go well.

The 18 inch wheel option has been added for safety, most 17" were magnesium, beyond their use by date, I know we bin'd 12 out of 20. 18" have better tyre choice, price and more available. New rims are similar price.

Next round on the 14th could possibly be a bit quiet, plenty of interest for the 2 later rounds and next year.

Cheers Stuart

Sounds like it could work.

Was kuhmo to expensive and rough for you?

I don't particularly like paying for a controlled ecu which I can't even live tune.

The latest team dynamics wheels are affordable but its the captive nuts that are the killer.

Wheels nuts are a bit crazy - cost wise aren't they.

Not here to bag Shannons / Kumho - not to rough, (maybe just a bit flash for me) too expensive for our budget - simple as that.

We have picked this date (pre03) at random for vehicles, on feedback over the last month. Hence the reason we will be running with sports sedans for the 3 rounds this year and your and other feedback is appreciated.

If there is any issues on classing, cars will still be eligable if log booked and pass scrutineering to run within Sports Sedan. I feel this is a great benefit to sort and build what class is required. There is many questions and there is going to be many more, for example what do you do with an AU 99 build with BA Aero front only. I would say it can't run, but for the moment it will be in sports sedan, for the sole reason the car is pre 03, aero is not. The chassis is part therefore, and for this reason this year, this vehicle is also eligable for gift / fuel vouchers on offer, if the driver fits the standards we are looking at for the series.

So therefore, what we are asking is for people to enter a eligable car and conform to a good friendly budget race series. That sounds basic doesnt it, with the view to chatting with many to get a good base set of rules developed for 2014 series.

We are only trying to get a series going we are quite happy with response.

This is not a national series, I am already in the poo because of the date picked on acceptance - eg so why shouldn't a low budget BF be able to run? My answer to this, if I could afford a BF I would hope to be taking advantage of it.

Anyways for the time Pre 03 is it, clean fun racing for a day $230 - (plus annual fee, passbook /log $20 registration $30 - both to MRA)

For this season anyone that is unsure while we are sorting the rules out, don't be shy to ask any questions and turn up - at the worst you might get upgraded to Sports Sedan - its the same sheep station at the end of the day, as long as we all do 3 races and enjoy.

Cheers Stuart and Karen

On the holden side of the bench the VS,VT,VX are all clear. The problem may face you with the VY. It was first produced in 2002 and ran till 2004,

My VY is an 02 GRM spec car and raced in the same year. There is VY's that were run and built up to 2004 though which makes your 03 rule hard to enforce if you knock back one VY that was built in 04 you can't really let one from 02 run as they are essentially the exact same car.

Maybe the vehicle model should be the governing rule like it is with DVS?

Like all VY models are eligible as holden produced them pre 03 but VZ is not?

Same for the ford guys the first BA ran in supercars August 2002 from memory right up till 2005?

Maybe you need to say BA is eligible but BF isn't?

It's easy to find out when a Supercar via chassis never first raced but once they get AASA logbooks it won't be that easy to identify some cars unless you know their history.

You could end up with 04 HRT VY's running as 02 model cars just to be eligible.

Thanks Risking - yes as long as the model was produced pre03, An 04 commodore VY is fine and BA Falcon is still fine. The Pre 03 year is a base point for other vehicles as well, as super tourers are also welcome ie BMW's, Audi's etc

VY with VZ aero is out, same with AU or BA Falcon with BF Aero. As you are aware the aero in this era made a huge time difference to vehicles.

Basically looks like rules will be as per Shannons V8 Touring Car series as a base with what we have come up with so far below.

At the moment;

Eligable drivers - apprecitive of their vehicle and others

Eligable vehicles are front engine manufacturer pre 2003 / model build

Roll Cage CAMs approved

Engine must be maximum 5ltr at 10:1 compression ratio

Fuel must be maximum 100 ron // E85 N/A - will be in Sports Sedan

Gear box must be H pattern

Rim diameter 18" x 10"

ECU free

Tyre choice free

Diff Ratio's free

Fuel Cell - CAMs spec for Sports Sedan

Seat Belts - CAMs spec for Sports Sedan

Seat - CAMs spec for Sports Sedan

Fire Extinguishers - as per current CAMs Sports Sedan Rules (but highly recommend 1kg minimum)

Brake pads and rotors free

Aero forward facing radius minimum 15mm to comply with Schedule F (CAMs) and class

Racing Attire minimum FAI 8856 - 2000

Noise as per track requirements

Thanks - your thoughts

Sorry Brad Nitrous is available too (my car needs it lol), E85 is out for this class, not available at the time these cars were running and the whole plan is to keep these cars even and budget friendly. E85 cars can run in Sports Sedans with us this year, and it looks like with the support we are receiving some gift cards / vouchers will be going to Sports Sedans anyways

Cheers

I would like to thank our new series Sponsor for 2013 - Windscreen Banner - Gary's Motorsport Tyres

Also thanks to some gift / fuel voucher supporters to date;

Cams don't allow sports sedans to run a larry bar. Yet most touring cars your trying to attract up to 2003 have them fitting.

No water cooler brakes, again most cars use them close to and after 2001/2.

E85 is common place in Motorsport now. Obviously it requires a fuel cell change and fuel system update. Something maybe your not particularly wanting to do so easier to say no E85?

Every car you have targeted is designed to be used on 17 inch wheels. Why would you say 18's when there is an obundance of Team dynamics 2012 wheels in stock at cheap prices that actually fit the cars? Does your car run 18's?

Have you actually approached owners of touring cars and asked them what they thought of the idea?

On here you and I are the only ones who own touring cars. I've got several cars we work closely with and some expressed interest untill I told them some of the basic rules you put forward.

As a suggestion why don't you just say it must be an ex competing V8 Supercar with a logbook as evidence. The car must be presented to race as it was in the period of Supercar competition with the following exceptions.

*must have completed its V8 Supercar competitive racing by the end of 2007 (2007 is the end of sequential boxes and opens the doors to kuhmo competitors but not DVS etc more targeted cars)

*ecu is free (good call as the controlled M4 is rubbish)

*tires are free

*diff ratio is free (not that anyone would need to change it)

*engine choice is free provided it has been used in Supercar competition by a team of the same manufacturer.(so an ext HRT HMS engine could be used in a different teams holden etc)

Those rules eliminate sequential boxes (didn't happen till 2008), E85 cars ruled out etc.

Fair enough the older strut front end cars like the AU,VT,VX etc would not be as competitive against the latter wishbone type cars of the BA/VY etc but the aim should be cars on the grid.

My cars logged 3D Touring Car - we have been through this with CAMs the cage is complied to run 3D Sports Sedans, you can't build a new car with a Larry bar - some say.

Shannons is on this weekend at SMP.

We have spoken to many owners of older cars, and this is where we are at.

Thanks for your reply

    • I take it that you bought the centre to suit the GTR axles? As in there was a plan, not just somehow lucky that it worked? It all looks excellent, by the way.
    • New engine block time. Up to you whether you want to keep going down this road with this project. Unfortunately a lot of these cars are like this. The road to getting these cars into decent shape is long and not fun for reasons that you're discovering.
    • Essay time. First things first, an RB running stock turbo and boost levels shouldn't get so bad as to stall from reversion if the recirc valve has been deleted. Should get a little fluffy and annoying, but in my experience, not so bad as to stall. Of course, every car is a bit different, so it remains possible that stalling will happen. So, running with no recirc valve is somewhat of an option, for otherwise stock stuff. Atmo BOVs cause all sorts of shit, even on an otherwise stock setup. Only gets worse the higher the boost and the bigger the turbo. At that point you really need to go for a different ECU and no AFM. Rebuilding the stock recirc valve configuration is not hard. You just need a stock or aftermarket BOV with the appropriate adapter for the 2 bolt flange on the back of the J pipe, and to get/make an appropriate ~1" pipe to get the air back to the turbo inlet, and to possibly modify the inlet (if it is not stock) to take the recirc pipe back in. Not hard. Just takes some cutting and welding. Putting an R35 type AFM into the car anywhere is not as simple as just buying the AFM and throwing it in. You will also need to buy the appropriate boss that will then need to be welded onto the pipe where you're installing it. You can clearly see why by looking at the photo posted above. They are not a "simple" swap for a stocker. You can't put on in place of the stock AFM. You can put one in place of the stock AFM, if you get the mounting boss and weld it to some pipe and otherwise make that pipe piece work like the stock AFM housing. Or you can buy such an adapter, either complete with the 4 bolt flange for the air box, or without, for varying degrees of work needed to then make it fit your stock airbox or some pod filter or whatever you have going on. Oh, and the R35 AFM is not plug and play. The wiring is different, but changing that is trivial. The plug is also different so you either end up repinning the original wires onto the new plug, or you just use a short adapter. If you weld a boss to the cold side pipe, the cold side pipe really wants to be 3", otherwise the scaling on the meter can get a bit weird, but whatever the pipe size, it's not as easy as just using the (fully documented in the Nistune doco) simple method for choosing R35 AFM in X" pipe size in the software, because the scaling will already be a bit different. Anyway, all of this has been comprehensively worked through on the Nistune forums, so there is full knowledge available. I would use a Link/Haltech before I would bother putting an AFM into a cold side pipe. That's a lot of effort for a bodge. Nistune is great, can work well even at fairly high power levels, but you are stuck with the limitations of it being the stock ECU, which includes needing to use an AFM, which is not always convenient for every set of modifications. You have to have a think about what you already have, what you want to have, and decide early if you'd be better off jumping ship to an aftermarket ECU. This so you don't waste time and money doing things 2 or 3 times. Never heard of ECUmaster. Sounds like a backyard operation. If there are good tuners for it where you are, and it is a solid product, then it will be fine. We're only talking about an R engine here. Back in the day they all ran on crude nasty early 90s ECUs and they were fine. You don't need a rocket surgeon's ECU to run one.
    • So left off with high hopes of having a gearbox in pretty quickly........ Got the adapter plate that week and had to chase a few threads and work out how/where everything goes as no instructions. Got the adapter fitted, test fitted gearbox and found had to cut and shave a few things. Tunnel required some hits with a decent hammer to give some clearance on passenger side but it fits with no problems,  could fit a 8hp70 with a little more work. For a cross member I wasn't going to spend $1100 on so shiny machined piece. Went through a few designs and remembered I had a gktech s chassis to cd00# cross member. Fitted that and found its close enough with a few extra bits welded so have gone that way and still a work in progress.  After this got into modifying the intercooler with some bends and clamps. I was procrastinating on this as was not keen to cut up and weld it myself but happy with the outcome.  Onto the radiator shroud and oil cooler mount. This thing took way longer than I thought it would but having to add an extra oil cooler for the trans and wanting everything within the chassis rails its good enough for now. It mounts to the chassis and gives plenty of room for lines and pipes. All the coolers are rubber mounted and sealed the shroud on the top and sides, will use some tape to seal the bottom gap of about 10mm. 20250508_111500.mp4   Next job was to build the new diff and after a delay with a friend got built this week. I ended up putting it all together with supervision and was good to learn how to set one up correctly. I ended up going a 3.69 ratio, nismo 1.5 way gt pro with gtr Axel's. Stripped it all down, gave all the parts a good clean, pressed on new bearings and set backlash. Was good working in a clean assembly room with all the gear. Once got home wire wheeled the case and hit it with some rollbar/chassis black paint. Got a few more bits done but will leave them for the next update.
    • That could be drilled, ground and welded. Would stop it progressing and leaking. But that block shouldn't be pushed very hard, as what you see there is a massive warning sign. But that fix also isn't going to happen properly with the engine in the car, and assembled. So you're looking at anew block if you're doing all that work anyway.
