Hey,

I just purchased a 1995 r33 gtst for the missus, and its having an issue where is randomly cuts out. It can be when cold or hot, WOT or idle. Some times it last 1 or 2 secs, and a few times it has lasted 10 secs. Sometimes its very often, other times it can go 25 mins without any issues.

So far I have checked the error codes. It came back with a 12 (AFM) . I pulled it out, still had pod adapter on so wasn't bolted to airbox, and was filthy. I cleaned it and bolted it to airbox. Looked to be fixed but once again it eventually started cutting out again.

I'm thinking its not the AFM any more, as its a solid cut, like ignition cut.

I've read a lot of people saying the CAS but the previous owned said he replaced it (was with a 2nd hand one though).

Any ideas before I have to buy a new CAS?

Could be loose / dry solder joints in the AFM? could explain intermittent randomness.

There is a DIY fixup thread around here somewhere...

ahh, there it is. --->> Click this!

Should be along the same lines for RB25.

Had the exact same issue. What I did was clean my afm entirely, took the four screws out and took off where the cable plugs into (realised I shouldn't have done that because it broke the solders)

Ended up cleaning it with contact cleaner and resoldering it back together.

Took off AAC valve as I found out they fill up with carbon, gave that a hit of contact cleaner and got scrubbing with cotton buds.

Unplug the purple and brown plugs near the centre of the firewall and spray some more all over the contacts. Also spray contact cleaner on the afm plug. I basically did them all at the same time so I didn't work out what was the main culprit butit mostly was the afm... good luck

So you think the AFM could cause the ignition cut if there is a faulty connection? Because I was starting to think it wasn't AFM as it will run without the AFM plugged in.

The ECU error is still saying AFM though, So i might have some faith and follow your instructions.

At first I just sprayed through the airbox onto the sensor and it fixed for a couple of days but then it started cutting out again. So yeah I ended up breaking the original solders unintentionally which I soldered back up and while I was able to get to all the shiny bits inside I flooded it with the CC, put it all back together and it's been fine since. No hint or anything. There's DIY thread on here somewhere and I just followed that.

    • The wiring diagram for the R33 RB25 is freely available, and is essentially the same same as most other RBs (just with differences as to which pin # does which job). To get the ECU to power up, you just need to provide power to the ECCS relay, and have the other power feeds that come in from the top left of the wiring diagram (wrt the ECU) that give perma power to the fuel pump relay, the ECU itself, etc etc, all connected. When you put power on all these it will just come to life. It's pretty clear from the diagram what needs to happen. Just follow the lines from the 12V + supply stuff in the top left over towards the ECU. I've even posted snips of such diagrams (not for vanilla 25, I think for Neo and 26) to various threads here in the last few months, talking about what it takes to get the fuel pump and FPCM up and going. Search these up and they will help get you started on doing the same with the vanilla 25 diagram. Hell, for all I know, I've done the same with that one in years past and have forgotten.
    • Yep...so unless someone posts up the answer you will need to probe from the ECU connector to the dash plug with a multi meter in continuity mode to trace the wires.  Note the ECU has multiple - and + (and across different key settings - Battery, IGN and Start) and most likely the power is fed from the connector(s) that is normally near the left hand headlight.
    • Thanks Duncan, I am actually just trying to get the Rb turning and running with the RB25DET S2 original loom itself  I am just trying to get it going outside the body and not thinking about the S15 or trying to match anything to the S15 loom at all I am only trying to see if anyone has done this and what pin they found to be the ignition trigger and ECU+/- on the dash connector, that's about it. Thanks
    • Hi Guys, Does anyone know any aftermarket part numbers for a starter motor to suit the VQ25DET? I can find lots of alternative part number for the VQ35DE, which I assume would fit, but there is a lot of conflicting information out there. Thanks..
    • I don't understand how this hasn't boiled down to - Upgrade the turbo when you have everything required. ECU, injectors, fuel pump, turbo, etc. Do it all at once.  If you don't have everything required, just enjoy the car as it is and keep saving up your pennies.
