To take a positive turn out of this for a discussion: Do you think P platers should be limited in the vehicles they may drive, or should it simply be that further driver training is needed?

My opinion, it has nothing to do with the cars, if they're legal; they're legal for all.

After all, a stock Skyline hitting an object at 80klm/hr is the same result as a highly modified one of the same weight hitting the same object at the same speed (may be better with big brake mod).

I would die if I had even 200 kW.... That's why I wanted an NA, just the right amount of power for me :) and p plater legal :)

With alot of stock 33's coming to age a few would be p plater legal due to power loss.

And what a morning it is. Demo subbie hit the water main for the shopping centre. Centre evacuated everyone gone home, this is not going to be pretty

LOL Should have planned for that haha

Wet weather contingency

I am guessing hadn't shut it off and now shopping can be done by boat lol

Nah just not meant to hit it lol. Shutting it off shuts down the whole centre. Main water supply for the centre and no shut off valves in the ring main lol

While I agree with you in theory...

New drivers should be learning in shit heaps. Learn much more driving a slow (and shakey) car fast than a fast car slow.

Aus will never have the driver edumacation required to make good drivers the norm.

Side note, new cars, even econo shit boxes would fare better hitting something at 80 than a skyline.

When I was on my P's I was legally allowed to drive whatever I wanted. However, I spent most of my time on P's driving a stock FWD ford laser...

Looking back over the years, my cars have gotten progressively faster - not just in terms of HP but also in terms of the brakes, suspension work, that has been done. From the laser through various stock and modified N/A R31s, to the fairly stock wedge, to the wedge as she is now.

This has probably been more to do with the amount of money I had to spend on cars at those points in my life, rather than through any sensible decisions I have made or through laws forcing me to do it. The only sensible decisions I can really take credit for is probably always doing the braking/handling mods before the power mods.

However, I feel that the way my cars have progressed has meant that the car I am driving has been appropriately matched to my skill and confidence as a driver, and as these have progressed so has my car. I mean, if I had been driving the wedge as she is now when I was first on my P's, I most probably would have killed myself.

P platers, much as they like to think they are, are not driving gods. They have very limited experiencing and just because they can pass a driving test doesn't mean they can handle a sports car on the edge. Sports cars, driven hard, will tend to get you into trouble. That's the nature of the beast. Good sports cars will get you OUT of trouble just as well, IF you know what you're doing.

It takes time and experience to learn how to respond when you get into trouble, and while I certainly don't claim to be a driving god now either, I can say with some confidence I am a much better driver than when I was on my Ps...

So long story short, yes I think there should be restrictions on what cars P platers drive... I don't think the current rules are perfect - they could definitely be improved, but in principle I agree with them.

I don't think there should be a distinction between N/A and forced induction - a powerful N/A car will get you into just as much trouble as a powerful turbo car. A blanket HP limit combined with a power to weight limit, applied to all cars not just forced induction, would work well.

I don't think we need to stop P platers from modifying cars, if they want to do brake and handling upgrades why shouldn't they - as long as they do them legally and engineer them properly. And HP mods are OK too, as long as they keep to the power restrictions.

With all that said, more driving training would definitely not hurt either... you still can't fast track experience, but more training can give you a step in the right direction.

I think its about time this topic was put to rest.

Yes its good to see some car chatter but people need to be reminded that this is a shit talking thread not an information thread.

I would hate to see one of our members attempt to take on a car above their skill limit and end up injuring or worse killing themselves.

Its bad for their family, the community and our reputation when everyone witnesses on the news another import wrapped around a tree.

This is why the hoon laws were introduced.

Mother Duck says remember the 50/50 rule and don't let your ego get in the way.

It's easy to get yourself into a situation but harder to get yourself out of it.

Shit heaps are more dangerous, than driving a well modified and legal car. If you have a car you like, you're less likely to trash it. Also, there appears to be a misconception that P plate drivers all have the same experience, and haven't already participated for many years in motorsport.

No rant. good contribution. Some P platers are legally racing years before they get their P's. They have even more powerful race cars and are surrounded by people seeing the red mist of racing.

It's a thread of conversations and opinions.

No one has suggested any of this. To be legal and on a road it needs to be inspected and approved by an engineer or inspector and none of us can do this over a forum.

Hoon laws, I know a bit about, as I was in the NSW Attorney General's Criminal Law Review Division at the time they were being drafted. Hoon laws stop errant driving behaviour, not limit car modification. They were a misconceived law and I can assure you the people drafting and approving them do not know the difference between a VN V6 shitbox on bald tyres with clear coat flaking off driven by some Trevor doing a burnout and a neat GTR.

Laws are based on perceptions of what needs to be done to address a problem, they are not always rightly made. I personally have issues with crushing cars for any reason, because I see this as a governmental infringement on peoples' private property possession rights. The Crown wants them they can buy them - I cite buying Indonesian fishing boats as a case in point.

    • Stock ECU (or more accurately stock tune) absolutely refuses to go over 10psi and behaves like you have seen. The Nistune is the same if it is the stock tune. If the Nistune chip has been tuned, the resulting tune could be literally anything for any combination of parts. The Nistune just makes the stock ECU Tunable.
    • So stock ECU does not like anything above 10 psi?  That Nistune one is just for "try" if it will be any different, I know it need to be tune for that. I know but YOU may know about these problem but i/we dont. They few little Skylines here let alone people who know anything about tham so that is why iam asking here
    • So now we have a radiator with no attachments whatsoever. It lifts up with a particularly tight spot between the drivers side air box mount and the lower radiator outlet, but if you've got this far you will sort that too. This is the lower mounts with the rad out so you can see where the rubber bushes go, it is a straight shot upwards Done! Assembly is the reverse of disassembly, with blood less likely to be shed.
    • Right, onto the second last trick. The Air Con condenser is mounted to the front of the radiator and stays in the car when the radiator is removed. There are 2x 10mm headed self tappers holding the top of the condenser to the radiator, remove those The bottom of the condenser is attached to the radiator with clips. You need to lift the condenser out of those clips and clear (up, then forward). f**ked if  could work out how to do that last bit with the front bumper on. I hope you can, and you share the trick.  Bumper removal probably deserves its own thread one day once I've recovered the will to live, but basically you need to remove the wheels, front inner guard liners (clips and 10mm headed bolts), the self tapper between the guard and the bumper at the rearmost point of the bumper (same as an R32 that bit), any remaining clips at the top/front of the grill, an absolute bastard design with a plate that holds the top of the bumper above the headlight each side (only 1 bolt which is tricky to get to, but the plate catches 2 places on the bumper and must be removed....carefully!) and push clips between the bumper and guard under the headlight. If you've done all that you will be faced with wiring for the fog lights on both sides and in ADM Q50 RS at least, 4 nasty tight plugs on the driver's side for the ADAS stuff. So, the clips at the bottom look like this on drivers side (looking from the front) And on the passenger side (also from the front), you can see this one is already out Clearance on both of these are super tight; the condenser needs to move up but the upper rad support mount prevents that, and the radiator can't move down far because it is (rubber) mounted. Once you achieve the impossible and drop the condenser off those mounts so it does not stop the rad moving, you are good to go
    • OK, next the shroud needs to come off and there are a couple of tricks. Firstly, there is a loom from near the passenger side headlight to the fans, coolant temp sensor etc and there is no plug to undo.  In my case I was OK to leave the shroud on top of the engine so I just undid the passenger side fan plug and about 10 of the clips which gave enough free wire to put it aside. The fan plugs were super tight, the trick I used was a small falt screwdriver to push down on the release tab, then a larger flat screwdriver to lever the plug out of the fan unit....be careful with how much force you apply! If you need to remove the shroud altogether for some reason you will have to deal with all the plugs (tight) and clips (brittle)....good luck. I removed all of the clips and replaced them with cable ties that I will just cut next time. Also, in the Red Sport / 400R at least, the intake heat exchanger reservoir hose is bolted to the shroud in 2 places with 10mm headed bolts; so remove them (the hose stays in the car; no need to undo it at the t fittings down at the radiator lower mount. Once you've dealt with the HX hose and the wiring loom, there are 3x 10mm headed self tappers holding the top of the shroud to the radiator; remove those.   The shroud then lifts out of the bottom mounts where it sits on the radiator, up and onto the engine out of the way.
