ok noticed this with my car when i 1st bought it a few years ago would idle between 1000-400rpm boucing while stationary like at lights in driveway morning warmup stuff like that now only yesterday my car was idling whilei was in the garage and it stalled i was like hmmm strange so i went and started it back up and it would not start so i poped the bonnet and checked the AFM plug and just had a look and then qwent back cranked it and it started let it run abit then it died again then i started it and it ran and then died again.

didnt know hat the prob was as i have never had it just die like that so i gave it an oil change and filter i hardly drive the car i have had the car for 4 or so years bought it on 99k and its up to 108ks.

Now im just wondering what the problem might be im thinking maybe this idling problem is all connected with the stalling i have a Vid of the idling but it didnt stall i just have to reduce the vid size from 850mb so i can upload it to youtube and link here.

My thoughts were AFM though i was told unplug it and if the car dies it isnt your AFM so tried that and the car died so thats one thing if its true.

AIC valve maybe dirty so i might pull that off and clean it this weekend coming.

also i thought maybe Air filter dirty or maybe fuel filter so ill change all them this weekend aswell.

see how things go any thoughts much appreciated.

car is pretty much standard apart from a Pod filter and a cat back 3 inch nismo exhaust it runs standard boost and ECU hasnt been modified at all standard BOV aswell no i havnet cleaned the AFM yet its on my to do list for this weekend do i read to use brake caliper cleaner for that.

Unplug your O2 sensor and see if the problem goes away.. a dead/faulty O2 would do that as the ECU dumps in waaayy too much fuel thinking it's leaning out when idling

My car had similar problems, it stalled sometimes during idle and then I went to start it and wouldnt crank over, and sometimes when im driving it loses power and the car is trying to cutt off and then when I get to traffic light it stalls, and I had to press lock and unlock again before I could crank, not sure if same problem as you but I had one of these in the glovebox.

Took that out and problem is gone. Hopefully this helps but sorry if it doesnt, hope you find the solution soon mate :)

But it dont seem to be running rich at all.

infact everything seems perfect just this damn idle problem Vid will hopfully be up shortly.

just try unplug your O2, it's a 3 sec job to do

direct link dunno what i did there soz for sidewayz action.

so what am i looking for when i unplug the o2 sensor?

I honestly thought sidewayz action was gonna be you tromping it round a corner.

That's pretty weird. I'd say when you unplug the O2 you are looking for less of that weirdness and more normality.

With the SAFC2 above, they intercept the Airflow Meter. Perhaps the Airflow Meter is your problem.

Try unplugging the AFM and start it. It won't rev over 2500rpm but should idle. If it's smooth, you found the problem.

Could be DIRTY or contacts could need a resoldering.

Ok just started my car with the AFM and O2s connected let it run for abit and it started to do a lil idle glitch and then ran good then stalled.

Took the AFM plug out started it ran good started idle glitch didnt stall.

Plugged back in the AFM unplug the O2s and it ran like 600rpm really roughish idle but didnt stall kinda smelt like it was running rich at that point.

Plugged all back in started it and it ran just like before.

Im starting to think maybe the AIC valve alotta people at work have been saying its a common problem with alot of older 90's cars that have built up crap inside the valve and it limits or stops functioning and was told to pull it off and clean it cant hurt to do AFM and AICV at the same time right..

  • 3 weeks later...

Ok did all the above...about 2 weeks ago started my car last night let it idle NP...

Today went out started it was idling died...started idle die....start idle die..thought id start it and acelerate see if it keeps the revs up and it was like i wasnt even acelerating..so im thinking its more to do with either ignition maybe plugs, coils,Fuel pump or Fuel PSI regulator but i doubt it or AFM still now wen it was dieing and i was stuck halfway down the driveway i jumped out popped it bonnet and unplugged my AFm and then plugged it back in and cranked it started and idled NP...drove it back up the driveway..let t idle NP.

i was reading that if i unplug the AFM and it keeps running then the AFm is stuffed If it dies its working well i unpluged it and it died on me plugged it back in and started NP and ran well.

Maybe ther plug is stuffed or a connection or maybe it is still abit dirty the only other things i can think off is fuel or plugs as honestly im lucky to drive my car once a month i do let it idle in the driveway a few times each week.

Thats due to my truck being my transport all day and wifes subie when im home.

what you guys think AFM ?

i was also thinking about check the ACV again aswell after i cleaned it maybe even just by a new 1.

start the car, unplug your TPS connector(s)

see where the idle sits, should be flat at 650rpm.. if not.. adjust the idle screw (in for revs down, out for revs up) then plug back the tps connector(s)

nah i dont think it has anything to do with the TPS as it idle ok its just it dies it dont drop idle then die it just dies

BUT..i will check that as it will be 1 more thing off my list.

    • What an awesome idea to fit the facelift Lamborghini Diablo headlights. They are a perfect fit!
    • An update regarding the registration with the DVLA I sent off the paperwork the day after I collected the car from the port, two weeks later it was all returned with a letter explaining they have rejected the application. This was because the cheque was £20 short for the road tax (I used a price list I found online). Nevermind it is what it is, it was sent back to them the following day with a new cheque. Fast forward another 2 weeks or so, I called them for an update to be told it had been rejected. Yesterday (16th September) I received the documents back along with another letter, this time it was because I didn't put an X in one box on the V750 (personalised number plate certificate), which declared that I had the rights to the personalised number plate. Why this wasn't mentioned in the first rejection letter, I don't know, but it could have saved this headache. The documents were sent back today, so fingers crossed third times a charm and it'll FINALLY be registered on the road just in time for the bad weather (woohoo!) To cheer myself up I lowered the front 25mm, was sick of seeing it sit like a monster truck. No idea how much clearance I'll have getting on and off the driveway, I'll worry about that when I can actually drive it
    • You're going to miss not worrying about rust in the strut towers like the Skyline shitboxes out there
    • A few little updates that weren't filmed due to not taking long to do or not interesting enough for their own video. My new K&N Air Filter arrived, I went with an RU-4180 which matched the dimensions of the universal cone filter the car originally had.  The battery had gone flat, while that was charging I tidied up the spaghetti wiring at the bulk head and down the sides of the engine Next job was to swap the stereo The Kenwood harness had the female ISO plugs cut off and the male ISO plugs cut off the adaptor loom and joined with bullet connectors. I ordered in a repair loom through work and re-did it all. New Kenwood unit installed (Android Auto, DAB, Bluetooth, Reverse Camera) The bonnet/hood gas struts have been poor since collecting the car. I couldn't find any suitable replacements locally so took a chance on a pair from AliExpress.  The originals don't use a retaining clip to secure the cup onto the ball fixture, would explain why I struggled for 10-15mins trying to pry off the cups. The ball fixtures unscrew using a 12mm spanner, new ones are the same size. Sadly no photo of them fitted, you're not missing much lol The dished Momo steering wheel got replaced with my Momo Tuner, turns out I ordered counter sunk bolts for the horn trim ring (like they normally are for the steering wheel) instead of allen cap (flat seat)  A terrible photo of a Quaife style gear shift knob I've had stashed in my tool box for many years after purchasing the incorrect thread size (I can see a pattern emerging with ordering incorrect parts...) Also threw in a cup holder and a (empty) Boss Coffee can, because why not
    • GT-R clearly the better choice! The 300 is certainly not insaly fast but has a decent amount of poke. Does a nice little drift around the corners with a decent amount of throttle. It's VERY predictable in a slide too.  Feels so progressive! People probably presume there's a 25 year old driving it based on my behaviour this week! 🤣
