I'll start by stating that my 95 gtst is in tip top shape. Auction grade 4.0. Stock apart from mods in my sig.

+ Yes I know i have to rationalise it myself and make a decision. Swapping my car +cash for a local GTR would be a good option but don't think many would want to go back to a T after an R?

My car is worth $18-20k based on its good nic. Figure I need $23-25k for a good 89 GTR (imported under 15 yr rule).

Pro's

GTR faster, attesa, more special, still look great, 15 yr rule ends 1 Jan 2005, I get to own a supercar before my life changes drastically (see below)

Con's

Going back 6 years in car age, older style, more $ to mod/fix, need to borrow $5k or so, should save for house and baby (I'm 29 and my GF is on my case),

Need help on pros vs cons to make good decision. I did search but no good hits.

I think your decisions are already made up for you... just by looking at your sigs....

1. Zymotic - you say your not too sure about which car and yet you are looking for a set of mags for your gtst... that sums it up for me ........

2. DJ984 - (now before i say this i don't know you all at all but just from a third party point of view for all i know you could be a car salesman..) You say how good your GTR is but look at your sig "R32GTR for sale "

observational points thats all gents.....

Point taken. Have modified my sig. Its not a decision I'm taking lightly I will not be jumping in I have already weighed up the economic side of things. But theres more things to consider than just those anyway.

Anyway I'm open to rational arguements for and against. I know my desision best but constructive thoughts from others particularly those that have owned both cars would be useful in the DM process.

Zymotic I have the same thought atleast once a week. I have a '95 GTS-t that is in mint condition, in purrs everyday of the week and only gives me an issue when I really push it (ie; Drag racing, Circuit racing - tyres, clutch, fluids). Apart from that it has never seen a mechanic for any issues in the 50,000km (18mths) that I have had it.

The biggest thing stopping me is I don't like the idea of having a 15yo car, and I also don't like the interior of the R32 GTR. I think the styling of the R32 GTR still looks quite tough when in good condition with good paint, the styling also hasn't changed from 89->94 so nobody would know that its an 89GTR just from looking at it. A 15yo RB26DETT could need some attention regardless of how it has been treated in the past, it's an R32 GTR... you don't buy them to putt around all day regardless of where you live.

To buy a good condition, local, later model R32 GTR (92-94) you are looking at $30-35k which is about $10-15k more than you can pickup an imported 89 model. That leaves a solid $10k for engine problems, paint, interior etc which is a fair whack of money for parts. Hell if the engine dies you could put an R33 GTR RB26DETT engine in for less than $10k which is still going to be in better condition than the later model 92-94 GTR engines.

The more Prestigue R32 GTR emails I receive the more I want an 89 model, the more I hear of the bad points that people talk about in buying such an old GTR the more I stear clear of the 89's.

If I could trade in my R33 GTS-t for an R32 GTR I would tomorrow but it's simply not that easy.

If i had the same option it would be the 89 gtr.  But it would need to be black and be cut and polished until i could see a reflection.     Now that is mint.  See below pics, how can u say no to that  :)

I could say no to that cos im after a grey or possibly original blu, black would be no.3 on my color list. Besides I've seen that one on prestige too and when theres examples like

this for approx $24k on the road here I can definately say no to that one.

If i do decide to take the plunge it will be with something similar <100k click with proof log books type thing.

Haha I'm not the only one then :)

Later models are out of my reach for the forseable future.

No its not easy but people do it.

As above reply I if i take the plunge I will be patient in waiting for a good one.

I see poorer interior as an acceptable trade off for the performance. Exterior wise I love R32, 33 and 34 as long as they are in good nic.

I took the plunge with the gtst and it paid off big time. I'm willing to take the plunge again on a 89 GTR provided it checks out good as far as I can tell from here. Prestige and Jspec seem pretty reasonable in their assessments of car condition and I have already imported through the former with no nasty surprises just nice ones.

Yes I agree though the chances of a flogged car are higher being 6 yrs older and a GTR but I'll try to minimise the risk. I'd be happy with a 100% stock one so long as relatively low provable k's and apparent good condition (age considered).

Well if you can afford a GTR, you are the best one to know if this is the case or not, buy one you will love the car.

I have done the trade up to the R32 GTR from a good 95 R33 Gtst. There is a great deal more about the gtr to enjoy. If you buy a car for the joy of spirited driving then it's no contest.

zymotic,

if you are talking about buying an investment property (one you don't live in) and you are keen to build your finances then sure put the GTR off for a little while. With the right investments over time you might be able to afford an R34 GTR in the future.

If it's a case of buying a house to live in then there goes your youth. A home you live in is a luxury not an investement.

women come and go, but a GTR is forever.

your GTR wont leave you for another GTR.

you can thrash the crap out of your GTR and it wont put an AVO against you.

You know whats wrong with the GTR and can fix it for money

you can treat your GTR like crap and it will keep coming back for more

there are so many Gtst's that they are becoming as common as taxies :)

looks like the i's have it

Hmmm ive been seriously thinkin of this aswelll. Ahhhh wat to do... Do i buy a big ass turbo for my 33 or buy a 32 GTR?

Nice avatar, they still look great in 2004 if they are in good nic. I mean I've only had the 33 for 8 1/2 months only a few mods and I am already thinking of moving on. Is it that I want more of the good skyline thing or am I just greedy?

    • This. As for your options - I suggest remote mounting the Nissan sensor further away on a length of steel tube. That tube to have a loop in it to handle vibration, etc etc. You will need to either put a tee and a bleed fitting near the sensor, or crack the fitting at the sensor to bleed it full of oil when you first set it up, otherwise you won't get the line filled. But this is a small problem. Just needs enough access to get it done.
    • The time is always correct. Only the date is wrong. It currently thinks it is January 19. Tomorrow it will say it is January 20. The date and time are ( should be ! ) retrieved from the GPS navigation system.
    • Buy yourself a set of easy outs. See if they will get a good bite in and unthread it.   Very very lucky the whole sender didn't let go while on the track and cost you a motor!
    • Well GTSBoy, prepare yourself further. I did a track day with 1/2 a day prep on Friday, inpromptu. The good news is that I got home, and didn't drive the car into a wall. Everything seemed mostly okay. The car was even a little faster than it was last time. I also got to get some good datalog data too. I also noticed a tiny bit of knock which was (luckily?) recorded. All I know is the knock sensors got recalibrated.... and are notorious for false knock. So I don't know if they are too sensitive, not sensitive enough... or some other third option. But I reduced timing anyway. It wasn't every pull through the session either. Think along the lines of -1 degree of timing for say, three instances while at the top of 4th in a 20 minute all-hot-lap session. Unfortunately at the end of session 2... I noticed a little oil. I borrowed some jack stands and a jack and took a look under there, but as is often the case, messing around with it kinda half cleaned it up, it was not conclusive where it was coming from. I decided to give it another go and see how it was. The amount of oil was maybe one/two small drops. I did another 20 minute session and car went well, and I was just starting to get into it and not be terrified of driving on track. I pulled over and checked in the pits and saw this: This is where I called it, packed up and went home as I live ~20 min from the track with a VERY VERY CLOSE EYE on Oil Pressure on the way home. The volume wasn't much but you never know. I checked it today when I had my own space/tools/time to find out what was going on, wanted to clean it up, run the car and see if any of the fittings from around the oil filter were causing it. I have like.. 5 fittings there, so I suspected one was (hopefully?) the culprit. It became immediately apparent as soon as I looked around more closely. 795d266d-a034-4b8c-89c9-d83860f5d00a.mp4       This is the R34 GTT oil sender connected via an adapter to an oil cooler block I have installed which runs AN lines to my cooler (and back). There's also an oil temp sensor on top.  Just after that video, I attempted to unthread the sensor to see if it's loose/worn and it disintegrated in my hand. So yes. I am glad I noticed that oil because it would appear that complete and utter catastrophic engine failure was about 1 second of engine runtime away. I did try to drill the fitting out, and only succeeded in drilling the middle hole much larger and now there's a... smooth hole in there with what looks like a damn sleeve still incredibly tight in there. Not really sure how to proceed from here. My options: 1) Find someone who can remove the stuck fitting, and use a steel adapter so it won't fatigue? (Female BSPT for the R34 sender to 1/8NPT male - HARD to find). IF it isn't possible to remove - Buy a new block ($320) and have someone tap a new 1/8NPT in the top of it ($????) and hope the steel adapter works better. 2) Buy a new block and give up on the OEM pressure sender for the dash entirely, and use the supplied 1/8 NPT for the oil temp sender. Having the oil pressure read 0 in the dash with the warning lamp will give me a lot of anxiety driving around. I do have the actual GM sensor/sender working, but it needs OBD2 as a gauge. If I'm datalogging I don't actually have a readout of what the gauge is currently displaying. 3) Other? Find a new location for the OEM sender? Though I don't know of anywhere that will work. I also don't know if a steel adapter is actually functionally smart here. It's clearly leveraged itself through vibration of the motor and snapped in half. This doesn't seem like a setup a smart person would replicate given the weight of the OEM sender. Still pretty happy being lucky for once and seeing this at the absolute last moment before bye bye motor in a big way, even if an adapter is apparently 6 weeks+ delivery and I have no way to free the current stuck/potentially destroyed threads in the current oil block.
