asps91
Hi guys, I purchased 2x garrett gt2850-5's for my gtr knowing that one was a little chipped but now I'm reconsidering having the wheel filed down and balanced for peace of mind. What do you guys think? Ive been quoted $250-300 to do this. Thanks. portaz
I would in no way run that turbo, contact rotormaster in Melbourne they are good and well priced too, I'd say that price is ok too but the whole cartridge should be checked too Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/436022-damage-to-compressor-wheel-on-one-of-my-2860-5s/#findComment-7135696 Share on other sites
jjman
if ur compressor wheel is that chewed then im thinking she has had a rough life n otherwise the imbalance from all this will have worn the bearings etc. Probably time to start fresh with a new core... (garrett don't do bearing kits for their turbos anymore from memory) Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/436022-damage-to-compressor-wheel-on-one-of-my-2860-5s/#findComment-7135716 Share on other sites
asps91
Well the turbo itself has no shaft play so the bearings are fine, all spins freely ect. It's obviouse that something has bounced around in there and done this to the blade. The other turbo is immaculate. No point in going for the cheap option just to have more headaches and costs down the road. portaz
Rotor master can quote it for you first and it's free if u get it fixed there too, and fast turn around, it's such a headache pulling these things off just not worth the rusk IMO Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/436022-damage-to-compressor-wheel-on-one-of-my-2860-5s/#findComment-7136056 Share on other sites
sucram
They arnt that bad. I have run much worse over 20psi. If you want to be anal, you can buy a comp wheel and get it balanced. Comp wheel shouldn't be more then $140 delivered Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/436022-damage-to-compressor-wheel-on-one-of-my-2860-5s/#findComment-7136474 Share on other sites

Comp wheel shouldn't be more then $140 delivered you can tell that from your keyboard sitting there that they aren't that bad, and also that what you have run before was worse? cmon. tho im not saying that isn't the only fix required. or perhaps even a fin grind n balance. but to assume it and whack them back on a nice RB26 is just silly. dnegative
I would run it; I've seen and let go a lot worse than that at work and never heard anything back, last one I remember was a borgwarner SX200 that had some sweet compressor wheel impact damage and its still running around loading trucks lol Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/436022-damage-to-compressor-wheel-on-one-of-my-2860-5s/#findComment-7136875 Share on other sites
asps91
I think I'm going to just send it off to get fixed. Sucram, where did you find a wheel for $140?
