hi all,

well i got defected today, the following "faults" were found.

-bov under bonnet

-wheels and rims 3inch oversize

-no clearance between body and top of tyres

-not comply with 100mm clearance

-no tyre placcard

-oversize exhaust

-loose wires under passenger floor mat.

can someone whos been through this tell me will i get a fine for each and every point listed above? As "no clearance b/w body and top of tyres" and "not comply 100mm clearance" are the same thing! ie too low!

and oversize exhaust?! WTF is that?! isnt it the noise level not the size of the pipe that matters?

It says i have to clear it via a FULL INSPECTION. Whats the deal here in NSW- if i fix the problems on the current defect, will they just go over the car and send me home with another dozen things to fix?

If thats the case then ill just drive it back to SA and do it there, at least i have all the tools/parts there.

cheers

1. BOV is illegal, no two ways about it

2. Technically, if the wheels are more than an inch wider or larger than stock, they require an engineers sign off to be deemed safe and accapetable

3. There is no clearance rule in terms of tyres & guards to my knowledge, other than no part of the wheel or tyre should foul/scrub on any part of the inner guard or suspension. If it does, and there are marks to prove it, then there are grounds for a defect

4. You need to have a tyre placard, the fact you dont have one will more than likely cause the officer to further doubt the legality of your wheels and tyres, particularly when they probably have no idea what size the car came with factory

5. If the officer suspects your exhaust is too big or too loud, they can send you to the EPA for testing to ensure your exhaust complies with the DB limit. To clear it either replace your exhaust with a standard system for testing or try and quieten your existing exhaust down to a suitable level.

6. Loose wires? Odd one - police normally wouldnt go to such effort when defecting so obviously it just wasnt your day. Try and clean the wires up

The end :)

i didnt exactly get defected for doing nothing, i was having some fun at the time which drew attention to myself.

The defect category is "MINOR" and says it must be cleared at an AIS (authorised inspection station)

-What/Where is an AIS? Is it like a registered workshop/garage? or is it a full RTA depot place?

-Also where would i get a tyre placcard?! They mustve left it off after the respray.

-And again, does anyone know if the defects are subject to a fine?!

Yup give your local RTA a call and they will be able to give you the address of some local work shops to clear it for you. From memory the cost is $20 for them to sight your vehicle and pass it, no fine (from memory a fine would be stated on the defect notice).

Just fix the minor things and then rock up with a case of beer in the passenger seat and see how you go. Theirs nothing proving that you didn't change things 'back' to what they currently are after you left the AIS.

:D

if they haven't given you fines on the spot then you are pretty much all clear...

also, give the rta a call, because when i got defected and still had qld rego i called both the cops & the rta to see how i could get it cleared and both of them said that they couldn't clear the defect cos it was a qld registered car.....so i called qld transport & they said that they couldn't do anything because the defect was issued by nsw police

so i took it to the AIS that is currently in my garage & engineered it myself......read: i took off the canary & never heard from the cops/rta about it again

    • haha don't worry I'm sue you've got more fun ahead buying a 30 year old turbo car....but at least you are in the right place to ask
    • some days eh? The keyless entry and interior light on/off with the key will be controlled by the Body Control Module, but I'm not certain where that is or what it looks like (you might get lucky with a search to get a part#, which could be printed on it). I'd start at the A pillar/ Under dash/kick panel on the driver's side
    • It might be hit and miss, but Nissan Genuine Parts and Pitworks are not the same thing, although both are available from Nissan Dealers with Nissan Part Numbers. Nissan Genuine Parts are the OEM stuff, Pitworks are their attempt to get people back from generic parts makers
    • I did end up getting it sorted, as GTSBoy said, there was a corroded connection and wire that needed to be replaced. I ended up taking out the light assembly, giving everything a good clean and re-soldered the old joints, and it came out good.
    • Wow, thanks for your help guys 🙏. I really appreciate it. Thanks @Rezz, if i fail finding any new or used, full or partial set of original Stage carpets i will come back to you for sure 😉 Explenation is right there, i just missed it 🤦‍♂️. Thanks for pointing out. @soviet_merlin in the meantime, I received a reply from nengun, and i quote: "Thanks for your message and interest in Nengun. KG4900 is for the full set of floor mats, while KG4911 is only the Driver's Floor Mat. FR, RH means Front Right Hand Side. All the Full Set options are now discontinued. However, the Driver's Floor Mat options are still available according to the latest information available to us. We do not know what the differences would be, but if you only want the one mat, we can certainly see what we can find out for you". Interesting. It seems they still have some "new old stock" that Duncan mentioned 🤔. I wonder if they can provide any photos......And i also just realized that amayama have G4900 sets. I'm tempted too.
