Hey guys,

So I'm just about to go for my green p's (NSW) and I'm looking for my first car to modify. I'm not interested in driving like an idiot, I just want a nice stock car to make my canvas for my first modification. Working in crash investigation for a few years now I've definitely learnt not to be a stupid p plater like alot of us are

I'm thinking an R34 model (non-turbo of course), this would give me a nice canvas to customise and sell off to someone else once I get my full

license.

Do you guys have any objection or opinion on my situation? Would you recommend another car or should I go ahead and start looking?

I would recommend an R34 4 door. Not sure how they go in N/A form but they are reasonably functional and look great! Parts are reasonably priced and there is plenty of legal modifications that can be done to keep the automotive enthusiast side of you happy. No idea on the price of them though.

The RB25DE is an excellent motor (for a 2.5 N/A six cylinder) and is stupidly reliable.

One of the guys on here has a great example of a silver r34 non turbo. His happy with his purchase and I'm sure you would be happy with yours.

Just don't expect it to be anywhere near as quick as a commodore or ford. The non turbo skylines normally struggle to even keep up with a lot of everyday cars.

Test drive one and if you like it then purchase it. Play around with things like suspension etc and just enjoy it for what it is.

But don't come back in here and start posting about bolting a turbo on to it while your on your green p plates. (That will cause a stir)

Wasn't planning on bolting a turbo onto it anytime soon, just looking for a nice car to introduce myself to the modifying community. I've got a '97 lancer but there's only so much you can do to them...

Additionally, I've considered a commodore or Ford but to be honest I hate "Australian muscle" as my friends call them. I'd prefer something imported like the skyline.

I had both a 2 door and a 4 door when i was on my P's and i hated the impracticality my R32 coupe gave me. For someone who will drive around heaps with their mates i think 4 door is king. Plus i also think the 4 door R34's look better, but that of course is totally subjective! Manuel Kasko is also correct, the 4 door's are generally cheaper to as they are not as sought after.

He is also correct about the power. Don't expect anything amazing though and you won't be dissapointed. Get yourself a manual variety and i can guarantee you will have plenty of fun in it :)

And you know what they say about 4 doors?

4 Doors for more......... door handles.

Good motto to go by guys. Yeah, I guess a 4 door would be a better fit for me, heaps of driving people around! Plus I've always had a thing against 2-door cars anyway. I was planning on buying a manual, BUT I have very limited experience in a manual (silly me), but I am learning now to drive manual, so let's hope it works out.

Another question, once I do have my black license and I have no restrictions, would it be worth adding a turbo, or just buying another car?

I learnt how to drive a manual on my way home from buying my r33 haha. It was a great learning curve.

Hmm it depends how much you spend on the 34 over the next few years. I think it would be pretty easy to drop a turbo engine into it and a new computer. But it would be pretty costly trying to just bolt a turbo onto the NA engine.

Okay, I might try and get my hands on an R34 soon and give it a test drive. I've still got over 2 years before I'm allowed turbo anyway. How would the skyline compare with my '97 Lancer GLXi (4-door), would it be worth the upgrade?

The only turbo nissan NSW P platers can drive (as of 1st August) is the aus delivered 200SX (ala S15)

This is my mates old car. R34 4 Door, RB25DE manual. He drove the pants off it and it was all legal.

Go and look up the rms p plate vehicle restrictions. You can do a car search to see what is banned and what is not.

The skyline falls inbetween. It says to contact RMS. It does not say banned next to it, however the 32 GTR is outright banned lol.

Silvia's are allowed. And I know what Id own as a p plater

    • So.... the K&N air box thingo was too big, ended up gifting it to a mate, well, by gifting it he actually supplied food and beer at the pub,  which was nice, as it will not sit on a shelf in the garage for the next 10 years I did trim up some of the existing stuff to neaten it all up and gave it some wrinkle paint, unfortunately it currently has a used and abused mish mash of different types of hose clamps, 4 big fat T bolt type (shit), and a few normal clamps of vairing sizes and brands, but..... only until the 6 constant tension black worm clamps that I ordered from EFI solutions turn up next week Currently the current hose clamps are triggering me hard, LOL Is this the final version, probably not, I really want just 2 silicone pieces, a straight bit of silicone from the filter to the MAF is easy and will happen as soon as I head into Just Jap tomorrow, the problematic part is a 30° silicone bend from the MAF to the TB that I can connect the engine breather from the head, I found that there are bulk head fittings for boat bilge pumps that should work, but until I can get a 30° silicone bend the alloy pipe, and the 11ty thousand hose clamps, are there for the foreseeable future 4 hose clamps are golden, 6 are grudgingly acceptable, the 8 currently holding it all together is just taking the piss    I've also ordered 60 more retaining wall blocks for the front yard, I mis-gonculated the height that was required to get above the base of the Photinia's (red robin's) that are the hedge behind the front fence, currently it is 2 blocks high, and about 1/2 a block short, so going 3 blocks high will be above the base of the red robin's, and allow some room for mulch
    • It is the stock air box with the panel filter. Everything else is stock except the exhaust at this point, as I also went back to the cleaned 270cc injectors. I will check the RPM when the IACV is unplugged and report back.
    • As MBS suggested if this is happening when the engine is cold you're going to want to remove the intake air regulator and verify resistance + that the shutter is physically opening and closing. At -20C should be fully open, 20C half open, over 60C fully closed. At 20C should be 70-80 ohms. For AAC valve testing using a Consult cable see if you can raise and lower the idle by commanding more or less AAC duty cycle. Hopefully it's pretty linear as well, shouldn't be like 30% AAC valve is barely idling and 40% is 1500 rpm.
    • Bloody apprentices! 🙄
    • Not sure yet.  Was considering speedtek because it was rated to 800hp, but when I did some research about him I don't think I will go for that🤣 So maybe giken gear set, but I'm afraid it won't be strong enough🙄
