Bought the car blew head gasket and never had lifter noise. Had a certain dodgy Gold Coast workshop rebuild the motor and had lifter noise mostly on cold starts but not every start and sometimes when starting at operating temp.

Motor failed after about 6000 kms and had it rebuilt at a much better and trusted well know shop and made more power and smoother running... STILL LIFTER NOISE same as before on start up mostly cold starts and sometimes on any initial start up at temp and getting more frequent as weeks/months pass. Sometimes start up at the servo after refuelling and lifter noise..so turn it off and restart and still lifers... Repeat until can't hear them and then drive out.

This was getting embarrassing so I just thought stuff it! Bought 24 brand new oem Nissan lifters $$$ and a set of performance springs/retainers and had them installed a few days ago. Picked the car up from the shop and 1 lifter was noisy but the car had not been driven so when for a decent drive and left it sit. Nearly two hours later I start it and it's all quiet. Next morning I start it and BAM! Lifter noise... And again after driving it and re starting at temp.. Then again this morning.. More lifter noise..

NOTE: At the first rebuild, new poncams where installed. Also I have a greddy thermostatic oil cooler with a greddy oil filter relocation kit piggy backed on it. I run royal purple 10w40 and have checked my defi oil press. gauge on start up and will post a video of start up.

the gold one goes on the engine block and is thermostatic and has two long lines running out of it to a cooler... the bottom half of the blue one screws onto the gold one where the oil filter would normally go so the filter is now relocated.

the noise stays for anywhere between 10 to 60 seconds on cold starts then goes away but its still there when revs are given...

if hot start and there's ticking, its there when revs are given as well

and i forgot to mention my power fc knock reading goes up VERY noticeably when/while there lifter ticking

I had this very similar issue on an LS1, after replacing the lifters it improved but still always noise and when really hot it would make very loud banging noises, probably the cam bashing the lifters... There appeared to be normal oil pressure and i tried every viscosity of oil, the thin oil was best but eventually thinned out on the hwy and got the bashing noises after half an hour...

A few possibilities i think are,

the lifter bores are worn same as a sloppy piston in a bore so they bleed , picking up air in the system like the oil pick up, and also after market springs and high lift cams only make the lifters job harder too,

so id of gone stock springs. Just my opinion..

Could it of had the oil restrictors blocked off or restricted?

I've had my 33 nearly 14 years and its sounded like your video for atleast 12 of those years. It's Had a different head, poncams, springs. and lifters cleaned at rebuild and the noise has never changed. No nasties in my oil samples either. I barely notice it anymore

This makes me a lot more at ease man thanks... I'm still going to replace the thermostatic oil cooler sandwich plate with a new Grex item... Thanks for the replies everyone !!

The previous cylinder head never made lifter noise until Nisspro rebuilt it... It later cracked anyways and was completely replaced with all new head and lifters but the problem persists ...

Maybe put the oil filter straight on the block and drive it like that for a bit and see if there is any difference before going and replacing the sandwich plate. Doing that will rule out a lot of the oil system.

I have a built motor with a lot of goodies in it and one of my lifters is noisy mostly at cold after first starting it, gets quieter with temp and other than being a bit annoying I'm not going to worry about it. I have good oil pressure monitoring and warnings in place so unless there is an issue there or it gets significantly worse I don't plan on trying to make it go away.

    • I wanted to try and preserve the front bumper as long as possible, they're not cheap and are made to order in Japan. Taking inspiration from my previous K11 Micra build where I made an undertray for the Impul bumper, I did the same for this BN Sports bumper but a little slimmed down.  This time round I only made a 'skid plate' (if that's the correct wording/term) for just the bumper surface area, the Micra version covered the gap like an undertray. Starting off with a sheet of mild steel approx. 0.9mm thick 4ft x 2ft in size. I traced around the bumper, cut it out and cleaned the edges. Luckily I was able to get two halves from one piece of metal In the video I installed it as is, but I've since then I've removed it to spray and add a rubber edging trim. The rubber trim is suitable for 1-2mm and it's a really nice tight fit. The bolts had to be loosened due to the plates being too tight against the bumper, the trim wouldn't push on I used some stainless M6 flat headed bolts for a flusher finish (rather than hex heads poking down), I believe this style fastener is used for furniture too incase you struggle to source some. The corner's are a little wider, but this may be an advantage incase I get close to bumping it  The front grill got some attention, finally getting round to repairing it. Upon removal one fixing pulled itself out of the plastic frame, one side is M8 that fixes inside of the frame, where as the other side is M5. Not knowing I could get replacements, I cut down an M8 bolt, threaded it inside the frame along with a decent amount of JB Weld.  The mesh was replaced to match the bumper. One hole on the bonnet/hood had to be drilled out to 8mm to accommodate the new stud, once the glue had set it could be refitted. I think the reason the grill was double meshed was to hide the horn/bonnet latch (which makes sense) but I much prefer it matching the bumper Bumper refitted and it's looking much better IMO The Youtube video can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVZP35io9MA
    • The video for the servicing and fuel filter change can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLJ65pmQt44 One of the main jobs I wanted to do before the car officially went on the road, was to remove the awful looking blue silicone hoses. There's nothing wrong with having coloured silicone hoses, but I realise as I'm getting older I prefer monotone engine bays with a splash of colour on the engine cover(s). I cover this in a lot more detail in the Youtube video, so unfortunately there's limited photos of the process. The intercooler, upper radiator, boost vacuum and upper breather hoses were all changed to black silicone with mikalor clamps. The only blue left is a blanking cap at the back of the inlet manifold and the GReddy pulleys (which will be replaced for stock when the cambelt gets replaced) While the intercooler pipes were off I gave them a quick clean/polish too A before photo I do have a replacement air filter on its way. Fuse box covers were painted blue, they're now satin black Another job on the list while the bumper was off, is to add some mesh https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54737966256_99b28bfa30_c.jpg[/img] I was hoping to use some thin wire to secure it, but it seems I've misplaced it and the wire I had was too thick to twist easily. I ended up using cable ties for the time being https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54737131882_c2b7989dcc_c.jpg[/img] Was pleasant to see this https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54737131627_8b2aab13b3_c.jpg[/img] The last thing to do was to fix the front grill and re-mesh that to match but I ran out of time The Youtube video can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4FsF6tgizE&t=23s
