Great, we'd love to get a good skyline showing next year:D

Helmet - any AS approved helmet (they just have sticker on the bacK). Don't have to be full face but its a good idea

Blue arrow just points at the battery - some put it on boot, some on window.

My bonnet tie down was VERY high tech - piece of rope thru the bonnet lock and around the bumper. Most people use a strap from a bag of some sort. Can someone please invent a purpose built bonnet tie down strap?

The only difficult thing is an extinguisher, about $80, mine is mounted just below the rear, passenger side seat.

Very Sorry for dragging up an old thread..but thought an old one is better then starting a new one ;)

I am doing this hillclimb..is there any advice people can give me on the mountain?

Is it as scary as everyone say's it is? I want to go fast but think my nerves may get the better of me :) I dont want to hit a wall but dont want to puss foot it either..I guess it comes down to the fear factor?

What tyres has people used for this event??

I am think of going on Road tyres 18inch so have plenty of rubber on the road :D

Any Thoughts?

are you doing the Esses hillclimb or Mountain Straight?

I did the Esses in 2003. Its boring. you really only get 1 corner - the dipper. But you're going the wrong way. The rest of it it just an uphil drag. Can't remember what time I did there in my old Datto in '03

Mountain Straight on the other hand is awesome! My advice is don't do it if you're the kind of driver who notices things that you might hit instead of focussing on the point of the wall where it meets the ripple strip that marks the apex or exit point. On road tyres and trying to go fast over the top of Mt Panorama with blind corners and concrete walls everywhere is a recipie for disater for the inexperienced...

My stock R32 GTR on 225/50*16 RE55S ran 52seconds dead up Mountain Straight in 2005, which was good enough for 3rd outright that day :)

I am doing the ESSES this time , which for my first time should be good. What tyres did you use for the ESSES?

I have driven around Bathurst on a normal day and sticking to the speed limit just to get a taste of it and that was an eye opener. Would definately like to try mountain straight after this one, should be ok cause I take it "easy" till I feel comfortable with the track, but in saying that Bathurst feels intimidating...

So mountain straight hill climb goes all the way around to Mcphillamy Park?

back then I had Hankook Z2000 semi slicks on the old 1800cc Datto 1200 - this is it coming up out of the dipper

I guess I was a bit harsh on the Esses, but the only real challenging part of it is the left-right through the dipper. You barely get up to speed for Forest elbow after the steep uphill start (well not in my old datto anyway!) and the rest of it is pretty straightforward. It definitely is interesting through the dipper though!

Mountain Straight goes from near the winery on Mountain Straight to just after Sulman Park, then they exit the cars into McPhillamy Park itself which is used as the pits. Its a great piece of road to drive at speed, but requires a fair bit of commitment to drive it fast with only 4 r 5 runs over the course of the day

That looks more like the cutting than the dipper.

the cutting's a left hander for one thing! you really don't know your corners huh? :D

found my Datto's time from the Esses 2003: 32.51 seconds

hey...easy tiger...i wasn't having a go at you or correcting you...i just thought how funny it looked backwards...it makes it look like the car is coming up the hill from the cutting. Sorry if that upset you.

the constant jibes about me and corners is getting a little thin...i think i might just stick to drag racing.

Far out, those sorts of times..I guess it is only a quick session!

The datto looks awesome, was that the one you were going to sell? It will definately be weird going up the track backwards, can you get a bit light/airborn thru the dipper??

Dirtgarge have you driven any of the track's?

not Bathurst...ive done many laps at Oran and EC...many more than ive done drag passes (35 drag passes in total), but people only know my drag exploits so i am labeled a drag racer.

would like to unleash 900hp at the tyres down conrod at Bathurst in the drag car though, it would look a little odd to see a GTR going down there with a parachute attached.

lol, you would probably have to pull it before the chase.

I went to the speed weekend, which is what the first post was referring to, last year. Awesome fun, social day out but not much track time. Still, it's cheap and you get the social aspect. It's the first weekend in December every year.

Re the sprint down conrod, I just hit 200km/h before and through the kink (is that the chase?) with a good launch.

Tyres, I used were semis. You can do a burnout just before you take off and when you drive down to line up you do those weaving, deliberate understeers to warm up the fronts. It does work but it's not great so I didn't totally trust the tyres until halfway through. Streeters would be just like on the road except it's a nice smooth surface. You'll be fine.

yeah its alll over pretty quick because its such a straight hillclimb. It's a different Datto to the one I have now and was going to sell, but they both have the same flares so they look pretty similar. The old Datto back then just had a junker L16 motor I threw together with some L18 bits I had under the bench and only had 116bhp at the wheels, and the Esses really is a horsepower test so more powerful cars will do it alot quicker. That Datto could barely accellerate after the dipper in 3rd gear! poor old thing...

it does get a little bit light as you crest the dipper if you're going hard. Its a bit daunting though - when you turn in all you can see is a wall of road in front of you and a green concrete barrier beyond that

Nooooooo!!!!!!! Don't worry about the fun poking mate, Harry's a stirrer :woot:! Though unfortunatley at times competetive circuit racing can degrade into trash talk similar to that horrible drag racing :(

Must be something to do with cars being on track at the same time and being timed. lol

That's half the reason i like rallying, because there's no trash talk (well, minimal) because not everyone has exactly the same conditions on their run through the stage, so therefore they can't really know why you were quicker or slower.

The old saying "water off a duck's back" springs to mind my friend, just get it out there and have some fun :D Fun is the operative word :D

haha, Harry, I remember doing the mountain backwards in the 2004 east Coast Targa, was sure an eye opener compared to running the "normal" direction! It seemed the walls were closer and not really setup for any run-off in that direction. I remember we had a massive moment coming out of the fast left (whats it called?) coming onto mountain straight. Big camber change (we were running it blind, no sighting) shot us out onto the grass and shadowed the wall for about 30 metres. lol, change of dacks required. :D

Cheers Ben, sometimes i wish Stacey never took the car drag racing (she started drags so ill blame her). I don't actually like drag racing that much and find it a bit boring. But we have had remarkable success doing it, so i guess people assume we have been doing it for a long time. Its like Ant West once said "i don't actually like racing Grand Prix bikes, i only do it cause im good at it".

I guess I got that impression because you kept saying Superlap was your first event and how good your time was for a first time and so on...l. how were we to know you're actually more experienced at circuit events than drags? sorry if the little jibe about corners offended you, I also got the impression you were a bit thicker skinned than that. I'd hate to be responsible for you "sticking to drag racing" when you don't even like it.

    • The average previous owner for these cars were basically S-chassis owners in the US. Teenagers or teenager-adjacent. I often tell people that neglect is easier to fix than something that was actively "repaired" by previous owners.
    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
