When I origionally bought my R32 RB20DET 2.5years ago the first oil drop I found quite large chunks of gold looking bits of metal which were hard but were able to be crushed.

After several close oil changes the flecks appeared to dissapear with only the odd little tinny bit of gold fleck.

The gold fleck is definately still there and it has been 2.5years later and 90,000 hard km's of running 1.1bar of boost with lots of high rev's.

The engine is still perfectly quiet (160,000km's total), doesn't use oil and still goes as it did 2.5years ago.

What are these flecks. The head has previously been off (as seen by marks on head bolts) some gaskets appeared new etc.

Is it possible the engine had been rebuilt soon before I had purchased the car or is it simply a bearing failure of some kind that has hung in there?

My money would be on a bearing wearing

(hey I'm a poet - and I didnt know it)

(I make rhymes all the times)

sorry about that

It would be hard to know for sure without stripping the motor (or at least the bottom end) but you may be lucky and get an idea if you have access to an endoscope

If its due a rebuild, you cant complain after that sort of use for that long. Just drive it till it goes :Bang: and then start the rebuild. :) (start collecting parts now)

Gold/Coppery metal bits usually indicates bearings...

Doesn't really matter anyway, just run it until it spins a bearing and then get it rebuilt. Nothing you can do at the moment, except maybe run a slightly thicker oil to slow down the wear...

New motor has already been built so no collecting of parts required :)

25de head ported polished, forged pistons, rb30 bottom end etc..

Only problem now is having time to take the car off the road.

If it wasn't for the paint shop saga the motor would have been in there these holidays.

Next oil drop (which I haven't done for 10,000kms as i'm getting slack with the ol' rb20) i'll take a few pics of the flecks or sometimes chunks of gold.

Then when I pull the motor down i'll take more pics of dud bearing.

Just a note, when I first got the car it was running Castrol Magnatec (yuk) and upon hitting the brakes hard I would get the oil light coming on.

Lots of oil changes later and this dissapeared.

Hey Joel,

My old vl turbo had the "gold glitter" problem too which was discovered when my oil pressure was tested and found to be very low(caused by faulty oil pump). Any way after a good 14 months after the new oil pump and many a thrashing its finally shat itself. I cant belive it took such a caining with no oil pressure, overheating and lots of revving....

Interesting..

Come to think of it when I first bought the car I was also having low oil pressure problems. Dropping almost to 0 after hard runs and for no reason when simply cruising. As I mentioned previously it would also cause the oil pressure light to come on when braking hard in to a corner.

It has since dissapeared after I ran Castrol GTX2 for quite a few weeks changing oil every week. This appeared to bring the oil pressure back to normal and the gold flecks have appeard to almost dissapear.

Since then I ran Penrite HPR10 and returned the oil changes back to every 5000km's unlike the previous 400-500km's every week.

  • 4 weeks later...

Though so.

My r32 GTR Didn't have an oil change for ages when I bought it.

After an oil change oil was still black!!!

This is very bad for engines, esp for Turbo's as I found out the hard way.

Anyway, I do the usual oil change every 5000k and filter at the same time because there is so much crap from not being changed for ages(not driven much by previous owner but caned when it was).

After around 2000k's one of the turbos decides to crap itself after a couple of high speed runs at 1.35 Bar.

The compressor is rubbing on the housing from bearings being stuffed.

My car had R33 n1 turbos already fitted, and since they are a ball bearing type I read somewhere that they don't like dirty oil and I think thats what has stuffed em. Now I gotta rip em out and fix em. I'm thinking of getting them rebuilt and highflowed.

Engine is still good, should do a compression test on it.

It runs a HKS f-con v pro piggyback computer. How hard are they to get tuned?

r33 n1 turbos are not ball bearing , i have them in my r33 very good turbos dont hi flow them , take them to garrett to have them rebuild .

You can buy oil test kits, they cost about $35 - $40. They are very informative and will tell you if there is any bearing wear. These kits are used by transport fleets as preventative maintenace, The test will pick up any fault before it actually breaks down.

If you do get one of these kits fill in the form with as much information as posible. i.e. Km's since oil change, recent repairs ect. then just put it in a post box and the results will be mailed back to you.

Kits available from most oil companys.

If you are in Perth I can get you one.

Regards

    • I was using the wiring diagram I have So 12.74V is coming into the rear Fuel Pump relay as I measured.  When I turn the key to ON im getting 0.6V to the Fuel Pump plug; which i assume is backfeed voltage and doesnt include the 12V from ignition power.  The rear relay is working and being triggered.  From the diagram I clearly see the rear relay 80 = Rear Relay going into the Body/H loom (R-27) 27 = Fuel Pump plug going into the Body/H loom (T-20) 40 = Short Connector (R-27) I'm reading 12.74V on the blue/black wire which is the power for the Fuel Pump   From this diagram I can see the Ignition relay goes into the front and up to the ignition  2 = Fuel Pump Relay <1M> (R-27) 37 = ING Relay <1M> I started from the pump using this reference Which the way I read it (referencing Nissan wiring color codes) is: Pin Wire Color Function 1 B/P (Black/Pink) Ground 2 L/W (Blue/White)        ECU Trigger 3 SB (Sky Blue) Fuel Pump 5 L/B (Blue/Black) 12V Constant Tested SB to SB on Fuel Pump for continuity - confirmed Tested negative on Fuel Pump to 12V battery and L/B - confirmed 12V Pulled the relay putting 12V between Pin 1 & 2 and testing continuity on Pin 3 & 4 - confirmed relay   So that has me looking at this part of the circuit to understand whats happening here...and im still confused. From best I can tell; the disconnect is back to my previous diagram; between Ignition Relay and Fuel Pump Relay...which yet again; afaik is where the immobiliser should.    Thats what I was trying to explain to GTSboy; im not trying to fix it myself; yet I seem to have to get a Masters in Electrical Engineering (while im busy doing my actual job of DevOps & Cloud Engineering) somehow.  I just wanted more expert opinions; or more so that what I tested is correct and proves it to something around that area; to go back to the alarm tech (for a 3rd time) that he needs to fix it. He keeps telling me its not the alarm. He lives on the complete other side of the city so i understand not wanting to make a trip but as I said before if its the alarm it should be up to him to fix it. But he's adament its not; even though I pointed out the FP was immobilised through the original alarm. To my mind; it seems that the ECU is sending the signal; but the ignition is not getting 12V down the line.
    • Maybe also really stiffly sprung track cars. Get the inside wheel up in a corner and all the fun stops. Also me sometimes (rarely) when I have to stand on the brake to convince the diff to drive the wheel that is still on the ground when I'm trying to diagonally get over severe driveway entrance, etc.
    • I feel like I'm missing something. You had an authorised installer come out and install a new alarm. Post install the car doesn't start, and you aren't getting the installer back to fix what they did wrong?
    • So either way it is gearbox out and look what is wrong?  I know about the input shaft bearing. Even before swap/new clutch the it sounded exactly like this: So is that inout shaft bearing or the other was installed backwards?  And can some please tell me the part number for that input shaft bearing? The gearbox is small box from R34 N/A and number is FS5W71C. Thank you
    • I am yet to see anyone ever regret a quaife or helical. ...other than drifting/skidpan duties. I kind of want to upgrade my factory helical with a Quaife (but really it's not ultimately that different, and is a MASSIVE UNDERTAKING), that's how good the hype is about them, that I want to try them 'just to see'
