i have an r32 gtr an the whole time iv owned it the relay in the boot, between the tail lights has made a clicking sound every say... 10 seconds. When it clicks it must draw current as all the lights dimer for a second. I have had a couple of people tell me there' does it too.......

It's normal. I have the dealer service manual on CDROM and have read about the funky little systems our GTR's.

The relay(S) you are talking about switch the HICAS 4WD pressure pump on and off. It usually switches in for 1/4 sec every 30 sec or so. Think it tests the pump and solenoid valve and primes itself. (hicas pump is located on top of rear diff).

If you disconnect the relay the pump will not operate and the 4WD light will stay on in the dash until you reconnect it and start engine again.

Hope that helps.

Sean,

Can you post up the relevant section from the service manual?

The relay in my boot is making an very loud clicking noise and causes the voltage meter to bump and lights to dim momentarily every five or so seconds.

Lucien.

I'll see what I can do. Does your 4wd light come on the dash. If it does theres a fault. My lights used to dim when it went of too but changing the batter fixed it cos it was stuffed on mine.

No, the 4WD warning light stays off unless I pull the wires out of the relay

Cheers,

Lucien.

My lights and instruments didn"t dim once I changed the battery as well. So it could be that your bat could be on the way out or it doesn't have enough capacity?

Hi Sean,

The battery is only a couple of months old, so its doubtful. Its possible that a higher capacity battery wouldn't experience a dip in voltage, but its not really a major issue and only really noticeable at idle.

I have done some more research and it seems that this is not an uncommon "problem". Its just a noisy (but working) relay. If I have time, I might play around with better earthing the relay.

Lucien.

    • Possibly avoid using a Cometic one unless the deck/head surface are perfectly flat. I did have a look just then and forgiving gaskets such as Tomei or Nitto don't exist for the FJ20, however the Bar-Tek or Kameari ones look good and might do the trick.
    • Because pipe threads for pipe things. M threads for bolt things. Throw some teflon sealant onto it and dust your hands off knowing you did the right thing, instead of going twice around the block to achieve a result using the wrong things. Of course, all of these solutions are ignoring the fact that the minimum thread pitch we're talking about here is 1.25mm, with the 1/4" in NPT or BPS being out around 1.4mm. You will need to know that the boss you're tapping has enough thickness for at least a few threads. That's one of the reasons that 1/8" is commonly used - because the pitch is <1mm. And why would you look to use 1/4" NPT in a BSP country anyway? Ugh.
    • Just throwing around ideas, does it need to be in the compressor cover? Why not the hot side piping?
    • 1/8NPT drill size = 8.7mm. Since the hole got messed up by me, it’s probably around 9mm.    So 1/4” NPT would be next step. A drill size of around 11mm would be preferred there which is not way of my M12 (drill 10.5mm and tap M12 threads)
