EPA - One Intake Mod only

Recommended Posts

Guest Robo's

Just been down the EPA again and i passed. But, he let me off as he reckons i have 2 intake mods, intercooler and air box. The air box i have got is the group buy one, which is all partitioned off and a roof on it, but yes there is a pod in there. Now, the only way around this he reckons is go back to the standard airbox. But i dont think it will fit anyway with the new intercooler pipes. We said, but it is fully concealed. I still understand his point but any i was let off and out of there. He reckons soon as a copper sees it, he will defect me.

Any thoughts?

Too easy, refuse them a search right to the vehicle until they bring the recorder and state clearly for the record their name and badge number and the precise reason they feel they need to search the car. They are allowed to search if they have reasonable suspicion of drugs or defects (not just modifications but real defects), so keep the car clean outside and stick to your guns. Oh and the big thing at the front is a "radiator". Seriously your best weapon is to look clean and stock and make them stay on the straight and narrow. If the recorder is on they are unlikely to be wankers. Case in point, I was pulled over for overtaking on the left in clearly marked lanes. Flogbag starts going off his nut. I stated that there is no law against overtaking on the left if the lanes are marked, but if there are no lanes it is illegal. He wanted to argue, I asked him to get the recorder from the car so we could get this all for the record, including him changing lanes without indicating or having emergency lights on. He gets in car and drives off (still hadn't produced ID and badge on request). Great credibility Plod!!

If you have the letter then you're stuck though.

Damn, thank god ive never ever encountered EPA.

One time a car pulled up next to me though and it was so nice of him to inform me of an EPA station 1km up...that guy saved me 10k

That is really tight though...having to remove a FMIC to fit stockairbox....is their any possible way of modding it to fit the "stockairbox" in next to the FMIC piping?

nothing to do with EPA but i got pulled up the other day for a "random licence and reg check"He was far ahead of me and done a 360 turn to end up behind me so he could pull me up.First thing was to check my licence then he looked at my tyres and said..."there track tyres"I looked at him blank and said "really?"he then told me that they didnt have enough grooves and they dont grip in the wet...i said "Well to be quite honest with you,i have had 5 sets of tyres on this car since i bought it,and these are by far the best i have ever had....wet included"I then asked him if he had used this particular tyre himself and he said no....i then explained how its imposible for him to tell me how good or bad they are...and he agreed....i actually had a friend in the car at the time who had an appointment at a real estate agent about 2 mins away and she began to walk there coz she was late....the officer then came out of his car and said "wheres she going"I told him that he was making her late and that it might be better if she walked there coz i didnt know how long he was gunna take....he felt bad and apologized and started asking about the car saying how he thought it was nice ect.....Although it may sound like i was being hostile,i wasnt.....I think that if you treat them just as a normal person a have answers for them(without making shit up or saying it in a nasty tone) police officers will generally be reasonable to you....i cant say i have ever been treated harshly from a member of the police force....and i have driven these types of vehicles for almost 10 years....

I think maybe age plays its part in the way a cop treats you and Geoff. I don't think he would be quite the same towards a 20 year old.

i juts got an epa letter as well, i have to take off my intercooler cos the stock air box wont go on with the cooler pipes, so its a huge hassle and could totally not be farked

You dont need to go to those lenghts, just a get a stock r33 box and sit it ontop or aswlll as you can near the ic pipes, and then just use cable ties underneath to hold it down. I did this when i got epa'ed and had cooler. The airbox was just basically sitting there held on with cable ties, but they dont check that just long as they can see a airbox on there they dont care.

    • The powder coating came in at $250 EACH. The TRX rims got a coat of clearcoat on the outside only.
    • Bit wet, but YUMMY
    • Keeping in mind that I am currently getting flat 10 L/100km on my RB25DET, which means >>500km/tank. I would test this car for vacuum leaks, check codes and AFM signal with NissDataScan as D says, check plugs, do a compression check while they are out.
    • It is hard to be specific half way across the world...but it *seems* like it might have a minor issue. Is the idle stable and does it rev smoothly? I would not expect any pops out of what I am assuming is a standard ECU, standard tune, standard exhaust. You can use Nissan Data Scan to find out exactly what is happening when it runs, the cable/software is reasonably affordable if you are not planning on changing the ECU (which hopefully you are not with an NA skyline) BTW your mileage may not be that far off, these are heavy old tech cars, and being NA might mean you use a heavy foot to keep up with traffic....
    • Hey guys! Y'all are the masters so figured I'd check in on a few items here. - My engine sounds ever-so-slightly more raspy than the other NA RB25s I've listened to. It's barely noticeable but definitely a slightly different sound. - When I back off the throttle at high RPM, I will sometimes get a pop out of the exhaust, assuming this can be diagnosed as misfire. Some history on the car: - Had an exhaust leak in auction sheet but was claimed to be fixed by seller (bought from USA importer).  - Car's coil packs and sparks were replaced when it was sold to me, but unsure on what the gap is and whether the coil packs are correct.  - A prior mechanic had misdiagnosed a pilot or throwout bearing sound as LSPI/detonation. Had played with timing a bit, pops/raspy sound of engine just got worse. Got timing reset. - Had failed emissions a few times. First time went in as is, failed. Second time, replaced cat, still failed, running rich as hell. Third time replaced o2 sensor, passed. Car still smells gassy though. - Timing belt and valve cover gasket also replaced.  - Gas mileage is... low. about 350-400K per tank.  Any idea if I'm having any serious issues here or does this all sound like normal old NA RB stuff and I'm fine to drive it with the pops/slightly raspy engine? If it'll help, I can get drop a video of the sound of the engine.
