hey all,

I am the proud owner of a fresh off teh boat cefiro with the RB20DET engine under the hood, it is my first time owning a turbo charged ride (past cars were silvia and supra both NA)... now this engine is almost completely stock apart from a 2.5" exhaust system.

What I want to know is what would be the most sensible upgrades to make on this engine to get a bit more punch.... I am not going to be able to fork out thousands in the near future so i am looking for the basic upgrades.

So air pod filter and ecu remap have been reccomended by one or two people, but I thought I would get a general concensus from the wider SAU population!

Let me know what you think.... If you have a resource online showing someones build up of an RB20 that would be tops too, i did google but didn't get too much success.

cheers all!

Luke

if it has an exhaust already then do the following if ur on a budget. The prices are what you should expect but will differ depending on where u go and who does the work for you:

-POD ($80 inc adaptor from Autobarn or Repco... fit it yourself and keep the stock box.)

-Bleed Valve ($60-$90 and run about 13psi on it)

-ECU Remap ($250-$300 depending where ur located allow money for dyno tuning if required. This will need to be remapped everytime you add something performance wise to the car.)

-Get some secondhand wider tyres for the rear like 235s or 215s ($100max sometimes more for 17s.)

That alone will get u into the mid 14second range (manual right?) and if ur a good driver into the lowish 14s. (pretty much the exact setup as was on my R32 except the 32 had damper adjustable suspension and a HD exedy clutch.)

-Finish off the exhaust if not done already with a dump and front pipe ($250 to $300)

-Hi Flow Cat ($230)

-Then get a nice HD clutch of some sort ($700+)

-Suspension setup (Can get some decent height or damper adjustable second hand jobs for less than a grand. S13 stuff should bolt straight up)

Then i would suggest upgrading the brakes on it... best to upgrade the whole system to something like the R32 GTST or R33 GTST or even the Z32 300ZX brakes like whats on my ceffy.

cheers for the replies, Inark, handy stuff mate. but yes it is a stockers auto... so I know I am losing a bit with the auto but its a daily driver in sh*tty city traffic so its been suiting it well.... the tweaked power is for the weekend fun....

ok well the pod is a sure thing, has anyone got a recommendation of the type to buy for easy fitting to the stock airbox unit?

so can someone tell me a bit about what a bleed valve does and how it is fitted?

the suspension is done, I had it dropped on sports ryder equipment a few weeks ago...

cheers

luke

autos are fine man... at least they are consistant unlike us :P

PODs... just get the cheapie one i suggested... you remove the std box... easy enough... 4 clips to get the top off... remove the filter panel and undo the 4 10mm bolts which go into the chasis. also disconnect it from the pipe leading to the turbo via the 8mm hose clamp.

Shouldnt be too hard to figure out how to attach the adaptor plate to the pod and then to the pipe where the box was connected to.

bleed valve is a little more difficult.. i will put up my guide on how to do it when i get home... it has plenty of large pictures to guide u through. A bleed valve is whats used to change the amount of boost you are running by bleeding air.

forgot to add u will also need a boost guage... there is no shortage of 2nd hand cheapies going around on most of the performance forums so dont be a stranger to the For Sale section...

i also have an installation guide on them too :P but its for an R32... BUT is done the exact same way and on the same engine so its all good :)

How much would an average comprehensive car insurance quote be for an R32 GTS-T?(most likely under my parents name, not quoted on me when im 18)....Im interested to know as i am looking into getting one when i get my P's as a first car. If anyone can find out for me that would be great.

Thanks in advance. :(

So yeah back on topic...

What I have is stock, with nice exaust. Prob GTR fuel pump, nice big pod, a bit of 3inch pipe going from the front bar to right in front of it. Bleedvalve at 12-13psi, depending on the weather (found it was faster on this than 14psi, I guess because of effeciency) Malpassie, and, a catch can, which I personnally found no gain from.

Anyway, this got me 195rwhp. All the mods I found a dencet boost from, I think I have spent $300... But I did get stuff cheap, and a fair bit was already on the car.

And with the auto... You can spool on the line better, and potentally get a better launch. You want faster times on the strip, let the tyres down!

sorry mate i couldnt find it... i'll have to make another one... i thought i copied it over from the last format... guess i was wrong... ive lost everything from my website

R32 GODZILLA, just go with just car man... Third party property + fire and theift damage... all sweet... that way if you wrap it round a telegraph pole... tough s%#t, you'll know better next time.. lol! but yeah, i'll stop goin off topic now

    • If you get 12v at one of the relay pins with IGN on, and 12v at another for about 3 sec when you turn the key from ACC to start, then yes you can just earth the relay trigger pin. Just have a look at the top of the relay, it should tell you which pin needs earth when the 12v signal is sent (or if it's not clear, just post the pic and we can work it out). If you always have 12v at 2 pins with IGN on, they it is earth triggered by the ECU which makes it harder to fix (you really need to check the ECU pin is earthing when it should, and if so it is a wiring issue from there to the relay.

    • Got the gearbox in and the front drive shafts.
    • Hi There I went through a rabbit hole of reading about Xenon headlights and the ADR regulations for having them installed. As people have been defected by running factory xenon I was researching in ways to make them compliant. Everyone always say needs to be self leveling and have washer installed, which I don't necessarily agree with. For this argument I'm using R34 as reference as I'm more aware on the construction of the headlight compared to the R33 Xenon, which may still be the exact same case.   For the self leveling clause taken from ADR 13 - Installation of Lighting and Light Signalling Devices on other than L-Group Vehicles As you can see the bold text "these manually adjustable devices from driver seats" are fine to use. As Series 1 Xenon model headlights do have a 4 level adjuster on the right near the ignition (however not series 2) then these model are consider compliant in that argument.   For the Self Cleaning aspect of this argument clause taken from ADR 13 - Installation of Lighting and Light Signalling Devices on other than L-Group Vehicles Now i can understand the argument that Xenon will need a washer as they are over 2000 lumens, but I clicked on the 12 at the end of that sentence and it takes me to the end notes which states R34 for headlight lenses are plastic, not sure if PL is mark as I don't currently have my skyline to confirm that marking is there. But could you not technically get a lenses with the PL marking on it and then get away with the argument that you need a washer. I went through a quick read of the adr and might have missed something else that may cause them to be non-complaint.    But wouldn't these technically be complaint headlights   Would love to hear other people input on this and shed some light   Edit In regard to the the washer portion I might be mistaken ADR 45 (which I believe is Regulation NO.45) states 12 cd (candela) I dont understand that portion in regarding to calculating the candela if anyone can shed some light. Otherwise I guess throw in a washer for the headlight and you definitely comply.
