hmm well i've lost two in the past two weeks, mabye the problem runs alittle deeper? i'm running r31 early eccs coilpacks and igniter with an r32 ecu, do you think the later model ecu could kill coilpacks? the igniter and coilpacks look identical to the 32 variaty apart from different electrical plugs on them. they stop working when they get hot only, so they dont entirely die (give it an hour and it comes back).

Whats the condition of the spring inside the coil?

Apparently these can crisp up a little causing problems.

Maybe thats what the problem is?

The spring gets hot looses its tension and doesn't make a proper contact.

GTR's are much better, as there igniter module provides much stronger spark. ND4SPD was running stock coils and module when it made 500rwkw, so it's more than doable. Pity they didn't make the GTS-t's/GTT's as good:(

Are you sure the ignitor is actually different on the GTR..? I think you will find they are the same.

mine shat themselves after 75000km went to split fires, compared them on a bench test to a known good RB coil and the difference was HUGE. The gap jumped by the spark was maxed out to 35mm, on the bench tester, and RPm wound up to 5000rpm and the thing was still sparking a big thick spark. Std RB coil couldn't hack it past 30mm and the spark was noticably thinner and weaker.

Not to mention no more break downs under boost :P

hmm well it seems i've got only .2v at the igniter on the cylinder thats not firing (no 4). i take it the igniter is on the earth side and acts as a big resistor to tame the voltage going through the ecu? so i'd guess its the contacts inside the coil getting too worn. sound feasible?

I've only had one coil die, #2 on my SeriesII R33 and i've been making over 300rwhp for a while now...fingers crossed the others don't follow suit...i've already sussed out splitfires if they do though :uh-huh:

how can u test which coils may be breaking down?

If it's breaking down at idle. Just take a plug of each coil until it makes no difference.

E.G, it will be running on 5 cylinders. When you pull the wrong plug it will run on 4, pull the faulty one, it will run on 5 still.

It wont blow up. The problem with the testing is that they very often don't work only intermittantly (spelling :(), also the consult will not see a problem even when it is actually happening.

I think you need to assume that they all need replacing or fixing because if one or two are stuffed now then another one or two might go soon just when you thought you had fixed it.

I'd imagine coils are a little like engine water hoses.

Once one goes the others follow soon after.

I had one develop a pin hole at the back of the head a few weeks ago. Since then 2 others have gone. All the little b*stards that are hard to get at.

If mine ever go i'll spend the extra $$ and get the good ones.

Well thats the way I have always done it.. on all my Skylines, and it's normally 1 or 2 that go, and you can normally find it on idle and pinpoint it.

I have never had to replace the whole lot on any Skylines in the past 5 Years or so.. :cheers:

I would like a nice set of spitfire coils.. but I can see better things to spend the money on.

    • When I said "wiring diagram", I meant the car's wiring diagram. You need to understand how and when 12V appears on certain wires/terminals, when 0V is allowed to appear on certain wires/terminals (which is the difference between supply side switching, and earth side switching), for the way that the car is supposed to work without the immobiliser. Then you start looking for those voltages in the appropriate places at the appropriate times (ie, relay terminals, ECU terminals, fuel pump terminals, at different ignition switch positions, and at times such as "immediately after switching to ON" and "say, 5-10s after switching to ON". You will find that you are not getting what you need when and where you need it, and because you understand what you need and when, from working through the wiring diagram, you can then likely work out why you're not getting it. And that will lead you to the mess that has been made of the associated wires around the immobiliser. But seriously, there is no way that we will be able to find or lead you to the fault from here. You will have to do it at the car, because it will be something f**ked up, and there are a near infinite number of ways for it to be f**ked up. The wiring diagram will give you wire colours and pin numbers and so you can do continuity testing and voltage/time probing and start to work out what is right and what is wrong. I can only close my eyes and imagine a rat's nest of wiring under the dash. You can actually see and touch it.

So I thought if I used my table of known values I could estimate it by putting a value into the pullup resistor, and this should line up with the voltages I had measured. Input 1 = 2.98V Output 1 = 50C Input 2 = 0.407V Output 2 = 150C (0.407-2.98) / (150-50) -2.573/100 = -0.02573 2.98/-0.02573 + 47.045 = 50 So the corresponding formula should be: (Input / -0.02573) + 47.045 = Output.   If someone can confirm my math it'd be great. Supposedly you can pick any two pairs of the data to make this formula.
    • Well this shows me the fuel pump relay is inside the base of the drivers A Pillar, and goes into the main power wire, and it connects to the ignition. The alarm is.... in the base of the drivers A Pillar. The issue is that I'm not getting 12v to the pump at ignition which tells me that relay isn't being triggered. AVS told me the immobiliser should be open until the ignition is active. So once ignition is active, the immobiliser relay should be telling that fuel pump relay to close which completes the circuit. But I'm not getting voltage at the relay in the rear triggered by the ECU, which leaves me back at the same assumption that that relay was never connected into the immobiliser. This is what I'm trying to verify, that my assumption is the most likely scenario and I'll go back to the alarm tech yet again that he needs to fix his work.      Here is the alarms wiring diagram, so my assumption is IM3A, IM3B, or both, aren't connected or improper. But this is all sealed up, with black wiring, and loomed
