How Strict Are Victorian Police On Powerful Vehicles Particulary The Skyline

Recommended Posts

Heed my words, buy a skyline on your P's and you WILL BE bent over and arse fu(ked! Do yourself a favor, buy a commonwhore, drive it till 21 THEN buy yourself a nice skyline with all the money you've saved in that time!

Thank-you, come again....

Ok, here's another scenario..

On your P's but want a Skyline? Get an R31.

They respond really well to mods, and can be converted to turbo without too much hassle. I've driven my lowered R31 for 6 months now, not once pulled over. And I don't drive that calm and responsibly either.

Then as soon as you're off your P's, go out and buy that GTR you always wanted. :D

As far as I understand the Vicroads rule, It is the "manufactures specified power" diveded by "manufactures specified weight" now i know i a skyline R33 puts out 187kw standard vs 1341kg kurb weight. This makes it illegal to drive on your P plates, but then on the other hand on the vicroads website there is a .pdf formatt document which describes all the cars a P Plater cant drive and the only skyline on there is a GTR R32. Obvisously this is because there were a handful bought into Australia and the R33 GTST isnt on there because its a Grey Import.... But you could bend the rules a little by that anyway... I wouldnt be overly concerned at this stage dude. If your being a dickhead in your skyline your asking for trouble. Play by their rules and you might just find you will be fine!

I bought my R32 GTR when I was 19 still got it never been pulled over. The Colour stands out, the exhaust is loud as. Just a big muffler on the end thats it. Just be careful where you open it up don't be stupid and you'll be fine. 1 word of advice if you live in the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne don't go to Knox cops just sit there and wait....

Cheers

if the R33 gtst isnt listed of the vicroads website they how can we really know that its illegal under P's, cops cant prove it as its not listed and i doubt they know the power figures of skylines let alone the R33 gtst. Just print it off and show the cops when they try to bust you.

You must have some luck not being caught by the police in your GTR, the insurance on that thing would be SKY HIGH at your age unless you have 3rd party, but to me sounds like you have good KARMA make the most of it before your luck runs out.

I was quoted $5,500 to insure an R33 GTR fully comp...

I'm 20 with no-accident/claim history

i was actually suprised they were actually gonna let me insure it at all (it was justcars). Half the insurance companies i called were like "u gotta be joking mate"

ok guys i'm experience with this. I'm 26 now. My first car was a R32 GTS-T. Not one problem with power to weight and it was my daily driver.

Super sideways and with factory comfy leather seats!!

Damn I miss that car!

:uhh:

i'm trying not to worry about it. Don't see many cops in my area, and i don't drive a lot. And if i get pulled over, i'll use things like Vic Roads didn't have it listed, i don't know what the factory figure is, blah blah, maybe when i rego it i might get the tare weight as 1700kg or something. How does vic roads determine tare weight??

cheers.

Hi how's it going... it is 2004 not 1996... totally different situation.

185kW VS Commodore persuit cars... The LS1 just a glimmer in a toggies eye.

Speed cameras were few and far between and the Kew Boulevard didn't have bike lanes or a 40km/h speed limit. WRXs drivers still waved to each other and all wore 555 jackets and what would now be known as rice boys were called "boy racers" and drove Suzuki Swift GTi's... Fast Fours was not full of 6-cyls and had cars that people had actually made (not just HKS parts bins)

Yes being on P's back then was wonderful, but it is a faster, more furious age that P-platers find themselves in now.

did any of you nuts notice that the VICRoads list contained mainly AUSSIE SOLD cars and not imported ones coz its really hard to make a list using standards used in a different country which may vary to the ones used in this country.

for example, does the factory specified weight of the car include a full tank of petrol or not. Does the figure account for the added weight of side intrusion bars during compliance, or does it take into consideration the factt that the tuning and fuel that the engine is used to is a higher octane than the ones available in australia...

well short answer... no. So they try not to list em.

Ignorance is not an excuse, and I'm sure a copper knows that line by heart.

i was under the impression the list contained ONLY locally sold cars, or low volume scheme cars. Hence R32 GTR is there, yet no other Skyline is (32+) because they weren't sold locally. If you've bought a car from a dealer, daddy's given you $40K, and you go get a 33 GTR or R34 GT-T, knowing sweet f*ck all about either car, go rego it, Vic Roads say nothing as a) they probably don't give a toss as long as you hand over your inflated $540 B) have no listing those cars.

You get pulled over for power to weight, and the coppers are working off what????? You weren't told by the dealer how much power or how much it weighs. Vic Roads rego your car, so supposedly everything is ok. Police don't have a Nissan brochure sitting in their car. I think that's why the Police sometimes do, sometimes don't talk about power/weight as technically they have no backing figures with them, or have anything at Vic Roads either.

I'm just going to get Vic Roads to put the cars tare weight as 1700kg.

206kw / 1.7 tonnes = 121kw's/tonne :) - Nothing to see here officer, move along :)

  • 2 weeks later...
v-spec r32 gtr's came with stock 17 inch rims which means 18inch are legal on gtr's.  the largest wheels you could get on a gts-t were 16inch.  there is some debate as to whether the fact that GTRs could get 17s also qualifies gts-t's however when most people go through compliance, most workshops tend to put the tyre/load ratings for the GTR (ie 225/50 R17) - or just ask them when you get compliance done.

i was just using that as an example, rim sizes have been discussed before and i don't want to start another argument here!!

They actual law is 1" width/Diameter or the wheels can be switched for another in the model's series. EG. A VZ Commonwhore Executive with 15" Wheels can have the SS's 18" wheels, with out the need for an engineering certificate (Although it can not have the HSV GTS's 19" wheels, as the Z Series HSV's are classified as a different model)

So with an R32, you could only change upto 17", but with a 33/34, you can go larger

it's upto extra 25mm width of wheel

and up to 15mm overall diameter of wheel + tyre (so 18s are legal as long as the amount of actual tyre is reduced)

i was wrong in my first post and someone corrected me.

    • I've looked up the parts number (41011AL501). It's around $700 OEM. Usually our Infiniti G35 here in Canada have interchangeable parts with my Stagea but the parts number are not the same. I have looked around and it seems the JDM 2005 V35 Skyline (which is the same as our G35) has the same caliper but I cannot confirm. And I can't find a repair kit. The inner brake pads drags on the rotor, seems to be rusty piston. Thanks for the info by the way
    • This coupled with 6-9 speed autos with ridiculously short gearing is why these modern shitbox cars always seem so fast off the line. If it wasn't for those things, Raptors would not seem fast. The problem we have is there is a driveability gap between a more gentle take off and a wheelspinning sideways launch. The difference between ankle flex required to achieve one and ankle flex required to achieve the other is about 0.5°.
    • Yeah I think I'm also with the opposite here. It's 'hard to keep up with traffic' because in the real world I'm accelerating with 15% throttle and they are pinning it. It feels like I'm being an overt dickhead at anything above 15% throttle, so the car sounds like I'm being an overt dickhead to keep up with/get ahead of traffic when I'm really just trying to drive with traffic. There would be no issue 'keeping up with traffic' if we used the same level of throttle input/aggression to drive around. People really do just drive around with their foot nearly pinned in econoboxes.
    • To be fair it's the other way around. 300kw is boring in a modern Golf or BMW. They are so competent / well-engineered / devoid of emotion that you have to go stupid fast to feel anything. Whereas the <300kw RB still makes all the right noises and it feels good to drive. Can pull off at the lights with the turbo whooshing and the blow-off pssshing and feel like the coolest kid on the block. Just don't look to the side where you'll see the bored housewifes in their shitbox Yaris/Corolla/Camry that kept up because you didn't go fast at all
    • 300kW is so boring in a Skyline, you'll get spanked by someone's mum's Golf with Alibaba pipes, and an email tune.
