Rb25DET lacking in performance gains?

Recommended Posts

Hey there ppl,

I drive a R33 GTST, (auctually this is my 2nd one) Now chasing big power would you say theres a limit the Rb25det could handle??

Im saying this compared to a Sr20det, which can make HEAPS of power without changing the head or block it self.

I see big gains in R33 but i hear of VL 3.0L bottom ends or Rb26 heads.

So would you say the RB25det is limited in making big horsepower??

I would like to see one with standard motor(i mean rb25) make more than 300kwrw.

Don't flame me, its just a thought iv had??

What do you guys reckon??

Donnie

SR20s can only handle about 400rwhp (300rwkw) before you must sleeve the block and rework the internals. Even then they are not too reliable above 350rwhp. I have no idea about the RB25's strength other than the block should easily hold 600+ rwhp. Only problem is the headgasket on the iron block/aluminum head motors as aluminum and iron expand at different rates causing greater stress on the headgasket. Copper headgasket should solve that mess. Get some forged internals in there and look for 500whp!

The stock Nissan head gasket has been used in RB25DET's making in excess of 300rwkw. Martin (Donnon) mentioned a motor making 330rwkw on a stock gasket! Detonation will kill them quickly though.

The JMS R33 GTS25t still runs standard internals (HKS 1.2mm head gasket & ported head) & has made 308rwkw (1.5bar) And if there's a car likely to be driven HARD it's one driven by Danny! (HPI Aussie drifting videos)

i have also considered the RB30 block road..

but if you really think about it, its gonna give you a stack of extra torque right? Especially down low and mid range. The problem is, even a decent modded RB25 will have traction probs on the street, while still making killer top end power. If you had an RB30 bottom end, and say 250rwkw, would you be able to get traction?!

This only became apparent after riding in whatsisnames car. when it had 230ish at the rears, 1st and 2nd gears needed serious throttle controll to stop the rears baggin! Awesome. 2.5litres is enough for street -i reckon:burnout:

- i dont think his car has any head work done to it? Definitly a reason not to bother with your 30 bottom end. This has to be a great thing about skyline RB motors in general - you dont so much as have to remove the rocker covers let alone the head, to get SERIOUS street power.

It is probably not that hard to get serious power from a RB25DET, the problem, as whatsisname says, will be keeping it alive for long enough to make it worthwhile.

Any serious detonation is going to kill it real quick, slight timing change, leanout, hot day, a tank of dodgy fuel. RATTLE - BANG.

So what is the point. If some hero can screw 400KW out of one and it lasts one week? Nitrous oxide is a good example of how to get huge power gains and blow up your motor on the dyno.

    • My idle is set at 950rpm though - Moving the timing around 20 degrees is not really what I'd call a calm idle. That said... neither is chop, by definition. The LS ECU likes to adjust timing to hold idle as opposed to air. It'd work, but generally speaking there'd be a discrepancy in the base idle and the IACV would want to move the timing around anyway to maintain said idle. I think I'm just going to keep the timing steady anyway. Preserve my engine mounts.  My aircon is now officially regassed. As the guy was reversing I noticed my reverse lights do not operate, along with my reverse cam. This is a bit distressing, because 100% of guides talk about which wire to connect to backup cams as "the goes with the [other color] wire". Often when doing conversions. Unfortunately the R34 colour wires aren't documented Unfortunately I had a T56 Magnum gearbox with it's reverse switch, which also isn't documented. Unfortunately there's definitely not documentation for people with both of these in the one car. Unfortunately I forgot. After many hours of this, I have a reverse cam and reverse lights again. The wire going through the trans tunnel to the reverse switch had broken. Upon inspection, it looks like this one wire had about 7 spade terminals and extensions in it.. for reasons I cannot possibly comprehend. I also spent the 750 hours required to clean up the wiring behind my head unit which now looks like this: This is a monumental improvement relative to what used to be there WRT triple gauges, head unit, traction control, wideband controller, and whatever the f**k OEM stuff still exists there in various states of connectivity/needed. Next step is to check in at the Exhaust shop to see/confirm how much clearance I have, to decide what mid mufflers or 'resonators' (which are just straight through, narrower mufflers) I can add and hopefully cut out a lot of exhaust leaks, pinhole, v-band or otherwise. But first step will be to 'take a look' before the next step.
    • Fark the AFM card and Nistune, Haltech Nexus S3, DBW, cruise control, flex fuel, dis dat.
    • It's most likely the bolt/bush where the cover bolts back wore and allowed cover to move forward.
    • Still haven't put the injectors and R35 AFM in so we can tune the bloody thing for the HG highflow it got mid last year! I think I can forecast the upgrade path to a bigger twin scroll, external gate, Haltech, flex setup, Samsonas, dis dat, etc will be .... a while away!
    • Should have taken that opportunity to slot in a twin scroll turbo setup. Maybe next time.
