hey guys,

1. im thinking of painting my dashboard, something like a DIY experiment. yes or no? how do i go about doing it? i don't mean the whole dash just the black parts around the speedo column and radio, aircond surround.

2. im also thinking of buying red bucket seats and retrimming the rear seats and door panels in red. any idea of the cost? it will be done in normal fabric not leather.

Basically, I'm goin for red interior with black exterior. and don't worry the car will have power as well.

Bam Bam,

I painted my dash myself since the places I went to for quotes all were well over the $300 mark!!!! I picked up all the stuff I needed for around $100 (that included primer, paint, flexicoat, pearl clear and spray guns)..

The one pain in the arse is that the standard dash has a black coat already on it which bubbles and peels when you prime it, so I had to strip it all off first, not an easy job!!!! I f*cked the first coat so it doesn't look that great close up but I figured I'd wait a while and see how it wears and then do it again....

I think it looks way better than standard, it certainly dresses the interior up...

Hey Bambam, glad you asked the Q as I want to head this way too:) ,

Brett, could you tell us where you sourced the paints and stuff? - you mentioned spray guns?? Also do you recommend rubbing down the final coat before putting on a clear? Any other type of finish recommended?

and maybe a coulple of pics of the finished job??

Cheers

Steve

Steve,

I got all the gear from auto one. They sourced the flexicoat for me, which is supposed to stop the paint cracking and flaking in the sun or when you take the dash apart (it hasn't cracked or flaked yet). I would recommend rubbing it back before putting the clear over it. The reason I stuffed it up was because I didn't thin the silver paint enough for the first coat so it went on a little blobby.. I rubbed it back a bit but not enough, though some people rekon it looks ok cause it sort of matches the grain of the top dash.. The clear is definately a good idea it gives it a really good shine. I had blue and purple pearl mixed through it but didnt' put enough in so you only see a slight tinge... If you have access to a proper spray gun and compressor it will be better but auto one sells hand held aerosole packs.. I went through 3 cans...

I will try and get some new pics soon and post em for ya, but some of the guys on here have seen it you could ask their opinion...

i did this on myold car. in the end i turnedit back to black. dont do it in silver or a light/bright colour. youd be amazed how big an area it is to spray! and if in silver, well its just a bit too much.

how i did it

1) use wet n dry or other fine sandpaper, sandback the panel slightly just to provide a coarse surface for painting

2) use a primer and give it a light coat

3) i used a spraypaint (auto paint from marlows) which worked well. i only went through one of the big cans.

3) apply a THIN layer of clearcoat.mine lasted like that for about 2-3 months and didnt scratch or anything. as i said earlier i took it off cos it got a bit much...

cost: approx $60 and an afternoon's work

    • This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.
    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
