You "could" go to Melbourne but it'd be better if you came to Adelaide ;) I'm in SA dude! The clubs in Melb' do go off though! Dunno' much about the clubs here? They always seem to have people lining up down the streets to get in!

A national meet would be bloody awesome :uh-huh: "If we organise it they will come" :P

You know Tim from RPM was just saying the other day how good it would be to do a "tuners contest" in HPI or Zoom. Each workshop @ the same place/dyno/conditions. They all have the same car for X time, have to set it up with there choice of ECU, tune it, & THEN return it to standard within the time limit! The logistics of it would be tricky but interesting concept none the less!

I'd have loved to do a back-to-back comparison. Something for Martin to look into perhaps?

It's good to see us SAU guys can have a decent discussion without it turning into a shit fight mate ;)

If you're ever in town (Adelaide) look me up.

:)

Matt

I'm in West Melbourne, I'm talkin' faaaaar west, so far in fact that I'm in Adelaide :)

Sorry mate I'm in a silly mood ;)

You're welcome to visit me over here though mate.

LOL - Matt's in Adelaide :)

I'm in melb - I've got a 33 running a pfc making about 330rwkw ;)

BTW - As been said by matt - A lot of the maps (unless you've got a highly modified engine) aren't usually touched by the tuner... Hence 256 is more than enough!

Imagine how long it would take to go thorugh 400 fuel maps and plot them, and then a further 400 ignition maps! You'd take months to tune a car!!!

Oh dear... I feel really stupid now

Tuners contest eh? Awesome idea... But I wonder how many tuners would actually have the balls to show up and participate, and how many would chicken out :)

I can tell it you takes a LONG time :)

I had two PowerFCs, and I copied *ALL* settings from one PowerFC to the other for troubleshooting... I got out the laptop, and fired up Excel :)

I sat there for three hours with my cousin reading out every single point on both ignition and fuel maps, as well as all other settings in the PFC...

I was ready to kill someone after doing that... ARGH!!!

Then I had to plug in the other PowerFC and copy all the data in the spreadsheet into the new PowerFC, which took even longer... About 4 hours....

Worst thing was, that there was nothing wrong with the original PowerFC, so all that was done in vain :D

matlowth (matt1) & whatsisname (matt2), have you guys got webpages up with your mods and photos of your cars? It's good to see other more *properly* modified R33 GTS-ts running around... Pity we all live in different cities! :D

Here's mine: actually I don't want everyone knowing my car... I'll PM you guys the URL

edit: Mine is the white one obviously... Don't mind the GTR badges, they're there to cover screw holes from the previous owner until I can source a new bootlid :(

sweet as... i think i've got a HKS 3040 turbo as well. It all came with the car (had it a month, the old skyline got stolen).

Injectors, Fuel pump, HKS FCONV, HKS VPC, dunno what wastegate or exhaust... i'll have to have a good look at what's on there once i've finished exams.

When does your turbo spool up? Mine starts at around 4200rpm.

Cheers,

Andrew

oh.... and how do you go with scraping your front bumper? my car is hardly lowered yet i scrape it on everything... it's just the R33 Type M bar. I want to lower the car more, but i'm not going to be able to drive it anyway if i do! Is that a UAS front GTR lookalike bumper? looks better on the car than in the pictures. And does it sit a little higher than the standard r33 type m bar?

cheers,

andrew

Mine starts spooling at 2500rpm, and makes 1 bar boost by 4000rpm, where my wastegate opens and all hell breaks loose... It dumps to atmosphere, so it attracts a little too much attention when I floor it... I have to be very careful that there aren't any Police around :)

Yeah, it's a UAS GTR front bar... I don't like it... It's meant for a Series 1 R33, and doesn't fit on mine properly... I'm currently looking for a new GTR front bar that will fit a Series 2... If any of you guys can hook me up, that'd be awesome!

It's much lower than the stock Type-M bar... If you look closely, you'll notice I've raised the front suspension by about 2cm to give myself a little more clearance...

The Z32 AFM I'm using is not going to cope with the turbo flowing 2.0 bar worth of air(which is what I'm going to run it at after the internals get done), so I need an ECU that can use a MAP sensor, and get rid of my AFM....

I was under the impression a single Z32 AFM had the resolution to support upwards of 600hp. Is it that the Z32 AFM can't physically handle ~2bar of pressure or is it that it'll run out tuning resolution?

Also, you mention HKS vernier cam gears were your last mod. Cam gears, as in plural. Did you ditch VTC or have you modified the inlet gear to work with VTC?

So it makes useable boost by 2500rpm.. would you be happy driving around a circuit with the throttle response you have? Curious as to how a HKS 3040 would drive on the street :)

Guest mightymax

I guess different people have different views on ecu but i used to have a microtech on a s14 and a powerfc on my wrx.

1.)Microtech

This is not what i would use again.Fuel economy is bad and the worst worst part is that it is unstable. Sometimes the chip is working fine and sometimes it just fouled up and starts sending wrong signals.my car would then jerk up and down and refuse to work.

It is not the tuning but the chip itself.

2.)Power FC

The car is running very smoothly and fuel economy is better. No problems so far....

Scientifically,ECU is just a computer just like a home pc.

If u have a ecu with a faster processor speed that process inputs faster, it is better

If u have a ecu that have more map points,it makes the car smoother ,more fuel economy and more responsive.(for example, drawing a long straight line with more points along the way to guide you would be better always.

MOtec with 800+points may be overkill for a street car but 400points vs 200 map points,u can still feel the difference.

cheers :)

Hey matt (whatsisname),

I'll be back in adelaide early december, would you give me a run against my lowly 200rwkw?! As im curious to see how much difference your extra power makes on the street!

nevertheless, we'll have to get some good cruises going this summer!

Cheers dude, -also like your dog analogy!

I too, thought that the Z32 AFM would be good enough, but I've been told that it might run out of tuning resolution when I turn the boost all the way up... I'll have to see how it goes...

I bought both IN and EX HKS cam gears, but I could only use the EX at this stage... We took the VCT sensor off, and the actual camshaft doesn't have the the mounting holes to mount the HKS cam gear.

I've driven the car at Eastern Creek, Oran Park and Wakefield Park so far, and running only 0.9 bar max each time, I must say that the power delivery is too brutal for a circuit car... When boost hits, if you're not going in a straight line, the rear wheels just spin (I use R33 GTR rims with 235/45 Dunlop D01Js for the track)...

Also turns that everyone else takes in 2nd gear, I have to take in 3rd gear as when I exit the corner in 2nd gear, as soon as I give it a little gas, it just spins the wheels and hits the redline, forcing me to rip it into 3rd gear anyway... I lose a lot of corner exit speed having to do this :)

On the street, it's awesome :D (I use 265/35/18 Dunlop D01Js on the rear for the street) I can drive around like a normal car with little to no boost 90% of the time, saving petrol and when I need the power, it's just a downshift away...

crazy... well i fried my clutch today in a race with my mates 300ZX TT and some guy in a 180SX.

So now i have to get a new one... twin plate for sure.

I wish my car made boost at 2500rpm. Although the car needs a tune badly so that might make a difference to spool time.

I have a Greddy Profec B boost controller and there is a knob on it called Balance that has mild (all the way to the left) and sharp (all the way to the right)... what does this knob actually do? cos it's set 3/4 of the way to sharp. Is it something to do with how the boost is delivered? cost at 4200rpm it's like someone has switched the power to On and you can here it rip and spool.

Thanks

Andrew

Do you think theres any way to modify the HKS gear to work with the VCT sensor and bolt it to the standard camshaft? That'd be a big break through. At the end of the day though, the standard camshaft is still probably limiting you.

Sounds like a good setup for a drift car :(

Re: webpages - Nahh - I did have one at www.fangartists.com, but it got taken down when our webserver died, and hasn't been up since.

I'll reply to yer pm with my specs if ya want?

I'm one of the 3ltr boys :(

Ummm - it was pretty much all done at once...

But there's plenty to be gained in cam timing :( I've got GTR cams & valve springs in my head, and I picked up about 60rwkw by cam timing alone!

BTW - My mixtures are still nice and rich... I run mid 11's all the way to redline... If you can make power and still be rich - that's probably the safest way to go.

Matlowth, What rwkw was your engine making before you had your PFC tuned? I am hoping to get 300+ after i get a PFC and some serious tuning, I'm currently at 281 rwkw.

    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
    • But first....while I was there, I also swapped across the centre console box for the other style where the AV inputs don't intrude into the (very limited !) space.  Part# was 96926-4GA0A, 284H3-4GA0B, 284H3-4GA0A. (I've already swapped the top 12v socket for a USB bulkhead in this pic, it fit the hole without modification:) Comparison of the 2: Basically to do the console you need to remove the DS and PS side console trim (they slide up and back, held in by clips only) Then remove the back half of the console top trim with the cupholders, pops up, all clips again but be careful at the front as it is pretty flimsy. Then slide the shifter boot down, remove the spring clip, loose it forever somewhere in the car the pull the shift knob off. Remove the tiny plastic piece on DS near "P" and use something thin and long (most screwdrivers won't fit) to push down the interlock and put the shifter down in D for space. There is one screw at the front, then the shifter surround and ashtray lift up. There are 3 or 4 plugs underneath and it is off. Next is the rear cover of the centre console; you need to open the console lid, pop off the trim covering the lid hinge and undo the 2rd screw from the driver's side (the rest all need to come out later so you can do them all now and remove the lid) Then the rear cover unclips (6 clips), start at the top with a trim tool pulling backwards. Once it is off there are 2 screws facing rearwards to remove (need a short phillips for these) and you are done with the rear of the console. There are 4 plugs at the A/V box to unclip Then there are 2 screws at the front of the console, and 2 clips (pull up and back) and the console will come out.
