Well as the title says, i was defected comming home from work only an hour ago!

I was just driving normally on Malvern Rd and suddenly saw and undercover XR8 turn its on lights on the other side of the road and after about a 20 point turn managed to come after me.....

I was approx 200m in front of him and had plenty of time to dart into a side street but though id pull over and do the right thing.

He gets out of the car and tries tell me i was speeding, when i told him i what honestly doing about 40 km/hr hw went all red in the face and said, 'right well then if u are going to be like that then ill just defect your car'....

hence the yellow sticker on my windscreen!!

Anyway, i have a couple of questions:

1. the defect notice saifd i have to have a complete roadworthy and one of the points is that my exhaust noise must comply with the EPA.... what does this mean exactly? does it mean i have to be below an certain db or does it mean i have to take my car to the epa? i am guessing just comply?

2. do i have to book in a time with Vic roads or can i just turn up with my roadworth and have my car checked and signed off??

what really got up me is that i was fine $169 for driving an unroadworthy car.....

There is no need to further punish me considering i was just driving in a normal fashion... i am no idiot on the road at keep all the speed for the track....

they take it 2 far sometimes....

i reckon the guy was just pissed of because he thought i was being a smart arse about driving at 40km/hr... oh well.... they price we pay for driving imports....

i appreciate your help guys...

im not that angry about it as i knew it was going to happen, it was just a matter of time and ill had the car for about 18months with driving 7days a week...

the items wil only take about 15mins to fix so it isnt all that bad, hopefully ill get a roadworthy 2moro for it an clear in monday fingers crossed....

you need to take the car to an EPA certified noise tester, a few exhaust joints do it. The cost is $27. You dont need to take it in to EPA.

secondly once you get a roadworthy cert. no need for an appointment, just turn up and you should be able to clear it without much hassle.

pity about the fine though...

i was afraid someone would say that..... so i need a db reading???

does anyone know where this can be done in the inner SE suburbs.....

i read my defect notice and it says, "Exhaust noise.... To comply with EPA" i appreciate the advice but i would assume that the roadworthy would include an exhaust that was too loud?

ill be fine, im just going to put the silencer back in, with it the car is very quiet so im VIC roads will not even think twice about it....

What did he defect you on exactly?

If you pass the RW I would be contesting the fine because it sounds like he was just pulling whatever out of his ar5e so he could add you to his 'defected import' list. Did he put it down as noise or something else?

I wonder what you were 'being like' exactly.. polite? civil? honest? Whoa get the cuffs out officer. Annnyway.

I have to wonder how he could fine you for being unRW. If it was for noise.. did he actually measure the db or?? I don't really understand how cops can give out unrw fines anyway.. do they have to complete a mechanics course or become a licensed vehicle inspector etc etc?? It'd be nice if they had to show you their mechanics card or similiar before they give you unRW fines.

the funny thing was when he was looking at my motor and the frontmount, pod etc, he actally asked me if the car was turbo hahahaha.....

anyway he got me for the usual,

1. Pod with front mount, he said i can have either but not both..

2. Boost Controller

3. Exhaust Noise

i very polite and honest, i dont like to stir up trouble as u never know how far they are going to go with it...... i even mentioned that i pulled over when i was 200m in front of him hen i could have easily take the next side street out of there, which he acknowledged and thanked me for... but it still didnt stop the fine!!

his attitude soon changed for some reason, he became very friendly and polite himself commenting on my stereo and asking how much it cost etc etc..... so i though "ok, this might not be so bad" so i was suprised when i the fine was with the defect notice...

under what conditions can this fine be offered?

Hey,

Too bad - in future if you see cops busting u turns / on the side of the road pulled over even with another car - make sure you floor the **** outta it. With the exhaust noise, this isn't something vicroads can test, they dont even have a DB tester; the noise level is something that is tested by EPA - if you have this on your defect you will most likely cop one of the following-

1) Letter from EPA saying you must take your car to a licenced exhaust noise tester, they test your exhaust and if it passes they fax the results into epa for you.

2) You get a letter from EPA statiing that on such and such day at a certain time you must present your car to one of their testing facilities where they will test emissions and noise levels of your car.

With the fines its tough titties unfortunately, dont worry though u get used to them after a while.

GTST i take it?

Cause if its a GTR the actual rule is "only 1 intake and one exhaust mod allowed".... GTRs have stock FMICs so a POD is perfectly legal.

that sux... still yet to be fined even after the 5 defects ive had so far... luckily for me.

If you see a cop turn his lights on and floor it on the other side of the road,

you should have pulled over in a side street, parked the car, and walk off casually as a passer by.

They cant do anything then, and I doubt they'll wait for the owner.

It's not about doing the right thing, its about the troubles. Save yourself time and money.

Exactly, once i even pulled into someone driveway and on their grass, turned lights and engine off to avoid a copper i saw in the rear mirror.

Remember if you drive an import in vic expect to get defected atleast once.

When I had an r33 GTST, bone stock, bar exhaust and pod, I got defected

for height (less than 10cm.) ON MY L's!!!!

My dad was like right next to me (and hes in his 40s, so i def. wasnt speeding)

The cops go out of their way to defect imports, its fun.

Think about it, if you were a cop (that didnt own an import!), wouldn't you pull over

nice imports? It how they get their satisfaction.

So it's best to avoid them at all costs.

if they can visibly see that u have something defectable even if ur not there or in ur car u can still be defected.

the guy that got Aits old 32 had it done to him.

    • yeah first and reverse is where you will find clutch release issues (whether hydraulic or mechanical) because the difference in revs required is the highest there; particularly changing down from 2nd to 1st when still moving. To be clearer though, it is possible that the clutch release bearing is the wrong height. This is less likely than a hydraulic issue but it is not unheard of when you are mixing and matching

    • Hi all, Restoring r33 series 1 rb25det. All the heater hoses were on their way out, have replaced them and put it all back together. After testing I noticed a small leak from behind the head on the actual metal water line to the turbo when cars warm. I tried running a longer hose over it but it kept leaking...   I am about to take the (stock) manifold off again😔 to change the water line does any one have any lines they recommend? I was looking at Aeroflow Turbo Oil & Water Line Set but not sure what everyone else recommends. Car is completely stock but want to upgrade turbo eventually. it looks like ill have to disconnect a lot just to replace these lines so if there's anything else recommended to do please let me know. Thank you in advance!
