Help with steering!!!

Hi,

I have just done wheel balance on my car on all 4 tyres.

This has been done twice now at two different TyrePower shops.

Resolution after $120 spent: The steering still shakes as soon as I hit 100km/h.

I thought it was my tyres, I don’t know. I don’t remember hitting anything at all.

So I don’t think it would be my mags. Possibly one of the tyres is defective, Front.

Thinking if it is backs, the whole car would shake. So it must be fronts. Either front rubber is defective or the mags are buckled. The guys at TyrePower reckons that’s not the case. I don’t know what else could be the problem. Can you guys offer some sort of assistance even if it is a wheel specialist place.

Thanks heaps.

Al

have a similar problem have a theory that its the front bushes that have started to show cracks probably cracked on insides first and worked way out thats why we couln figure it out my mechanic thinks i might be right am getting whole new suspension soon ( whiteline works kit) this better fix it

I was told by a mechanic that the suspension wouldn't affect just a steering, but the whole car. So I am inclined to say wheels. It's only the steering that shakes at early100. Even thought it was my discs. But that would only affect breaking. So the steering would pull to the dirrection of the front disc that is not grinded as much.

That's what I was told. I m getting the all machined and new brakes done aswell.

Some sort of Bendix. Any advice on Bendix while we are on the subject.

Bendix Advance front and rear plus all for machined disc's for $340.

I think that sounds ok. What do you think?

ah yes true but mines only a theory and i need new suspension anywho i find i have a vibration between 85ish - 115ish no probs on strip or track vibration on acceleration deceleration and at steady pace mechanic sed the bushes that are cracked cop the full weight of the front of the vehicle and so may cause it but that theres no danger of s%$t hitting fan sort of thing

How's the wheel alignment?

How's the wheel alignment?

Alignment is fine ,

In that case it would only make the car push left or the opposite on the straight...

Depending on speed. I don't think the alignment would have anything to do with vibrations on steering at particular sped.

If I am wrong please guys explain how that is possible. As the vibrations are on 100 sharp and constant after that. Alignment would affect it on lover speed...

Yes?

If the alignment is out it can only show itself at certain speed ranges, As i have experienced in my Magna. I have a similar problem that at 70 - 90 kms i could feel a shudder but soon as i got over say 95kms it was smooth again. Saying that soon as i got under 70kms it was fine too it was only that range of 70 - 90kms.

So i got a wheel alignment done and it was fixed, i defiantly dont know much about cars or evan physics to explain it. Our problems sounded familiar so i though i would share, i hope i have helped.

Yes?

when I first got my "line", it would shudder when I reached around 115-120km/hr. The wheels were balanced, yet still that shudder. Didn't do much about it after that as I didn't often go that speed anyway.

When I discovered that the insides of the front tyres were wearing bad (excessive negative camber) I got the alignment checked and camber kit had to be installed as camber was way too much on the negative side. Negative camber will not necessarily give shudder as race cars use huge amounts of -tive camber, depending on track layout. Anyway the shudder is no longer there so I suspect something else in the alignment was out.

Pulling left or right doesn't necessarily have to be a symptom for the alignment to be out.

A failure in a tyre wall could be a possibility for shuddering or other tyre problems.

If you are able, try to swap your front wheels and tyres with one of your mates and take it for a spin. That way you will be able to discount the tyre factor.

If that checks out ok, then you might look at suspension bushes or even shockies.

Hope that helps

when my car got here from japan it had a bad vibration and the compliance workshop got all 4 wheels balanced and aligned however the problem still persisted. He dropped the tailshaft and he 3 uni-joints were worn and not moving freely he sent it off to some place in osborne park and they machined the joints and replaced them and all was fine again.

I had this problem a while ago...

Had 235 rears and 215 fronts, and i always had a vibration at about 110-120ish, went thru like 2 different sets of tyres and it was still there...

... then I got 255 rears, and 235 fronts..... were told the rims were slightly buckled while my tyre guy was doing the balancing, but put them on the car and it was perfect!

It might be your choice of rubber - but if you got two completely different brands both times it wouldn't be that?

i have same thing when i hit 120km :Paranoid:

Steering wheel wobbles after alignments, new rubber, new pads and new bushes ...... give up ..... i just cling to the steering wheel harder :P

hahaha so im not the onli one having problems :D my whole car is fkd, the people that did the custom boss kit thingy for steering wheel did it for it to be straight and now its gone wonky and stays wonky... its like tilted when u drive straight... with the car pushing to left when u drive straight, and it sometimes does that shaking shit that u guys are talkin about when goin through different speeds...

Guys I was told by all the tyre places and the mechanics that the suspension would not affect the steering, entire car would be affected. Not just an isolated steering problem. Most likely its the tyres. I have Goodyear, Venturas. $150each, brand new. Found out they have bumps in the circle fronface. When the wheel is rotating you can see the bumps on it. Even with the alignment done to 0.5g an all sides. I think I have crap tyres. It's gona be a Bad year with my GoodYEars. Hope I find something other than that solution.

And guys my steering is critical, it shakes 1 to 2 cm on both sides. at 100-120...not drivable.

Hope someone can recomend a good place.

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
