You make maximum power, just before detonation or pinging occurs.

Usually a tuner will add timing advance until he hits the detonation point, then retard it a few degress.

Detonation will kill your car very very quickly.

Actually yeah light pinging can actually produce more power because the cylinder pressures are even higher than normal combustion conditions, so thus you get more torque. Heavy pinging usually doesnt produce lots more power however because the pressures are so uncontrolled. But yes obviously in both conditions its detrimental to your engine..

Yeah ok, i understand what you said.

But to even get a little bit of pinging, wouldn't you be to close to the edge, if something changed a little, lower ron fuel for example, the light pinging will change to major pinging?

But anyway, what you said is probally true, not doubting that.

But who the hell would want an extra 3kw by putting their motor on the edge, i wouldnt beleive any tuner would tune to that extreme?

Maybe good for a dyno/power run to impress your mates, enhance the figures a little ;)

I think it would result in more power, as when it pings itself to death you would most likely rebuild the engine with stronger internals that could handle more power. then you would feel obliged to make the most of it with the appropriate external mods etc. could take some time though...

    • Welcome. Dont let anyone dissuade you from your dreams. If you want a gtr, keep sabing and you will eventually get one. I feel like if I had have bought stocks, those companies would have gone bust and I would have lost my money.  There's a gamble in everything we buy. I've had good times and bad. But... I've also met my absolute best friend through this network and can't imagine life without them(more like a brother). Keep in mind, some specific mods will change as technology gets better. If you feel like general chat, there's always the wasteland.....
    • Those are some very cutesy barriers! Is that common?
    • Saw this abandoned Honda Fit in a carpark that was getting repaved... they just 'cut around it' and continued with the job! There's a number of reasons why the car could have been abandoned, but as for the construction company, legally they don't have permission to move the car from the owner (who has moved on and can't be contacted) so all they can do it just leave it there with enough space around it so it won't get damaged.
    • You’ll want to have the block drilled and tapped to suit 1/2in head studs and the head for the same. How much power do you intend to make?
    • Sorry for resurrecting an oldish thread Not much has happened in the past year since the last update. The car did another 1000 miles or so and failed the MOT for the first time in October (failed on tyres which had been advised for a couple of years) In October the car got put up for sale and was removed in November due to no interest, being so close to christmas it was to be expected. The roads were dry in February so I decided to tax it early and get the new tyres fitted.   Fast forward to April, I got someone in to give the car a good clean after sitting for the winter.                                 The car got re-advertised and today (Saturday 3rd May) the car sold. The new owner is planning a GTR conversion at some point and a respray in the same pearl white. It's bitter sweet, it's a shame to have the car sit there for half the year and then only do 1000 miles. The kids are growing too quick and space in the back is getting limited. It's been a great 6.5 years of ownership
