Hey guys,

My skyline (GTs-t) has done this since I got it. When you start it up for the first time in the morning it sorta struggles to idle on its own, if you give it a rev, the stepper motor kicks in and its fine from there. Then when your driving, under medium throttle it surges a fair bit. If you floor it its fine, but under some throttle pressure it stumbles and surges. Once its warm, its fine.

The fuel pump isn't audible from inside the car so I'm guessing its the stocker so that could be the issue but I'd like some ideas to make sure.

thanks fellas!

the most common culprit for this sort of thing with R32's is coil packs. there's a lot of thread regard these stalling/start up issue so search around...

its stock ECU, only exhaust and filter......

yeah I replaced one of the coil packs soon after it landed cause it was a dud..... Kinda a lucky dip with second hand coils though. It runs fine, just after start up its dodgy....

anyone know how much new coilpacks are? genuine or splitfire?

anyone think it could be something else?

mine does the same thing even if i let it idle for a bit ever since i got it

as far as i know stock ecu wheres it located soi can have a look see?? just got a pod and a bigger exhaust that came with it n the boost been played with before i got it but dunno wat its runnin at now

Mine has done this since day 1 of driving it (been on the road for over 2 yrs now). Once the temp guage gets to half way, shes fine, just warm it up if it pisses you off, if not don't thrash it till its warm. I get in mine cold, drive it straight away, 2-3 mins max, its warmed up. You can feel it hit that certain point once the temp guage is halfway, it 'clears up' and feels normal. Done it since I first got it on the road. Quite common apparently.

Don't forget, these cars are getting old now, mines a late '93, 12 yrs old now!

It's most likely to be the cold start programme built into the standard RB20 ECU. My car also has these characteristics, and its 23 years old!

FYI, the ECU in an R32 is located in the passengers side kick panel.

hi, check the plugs for the temp, one for the gauge and one for the computer, put the plugs on two or three times just to make sure the contacts are good, the computer prob thinks the temp is diff to what it really is. These sensors/plugs are pretty old by now and more than likely wont be operating 100%. this is where i would start first. The plugs are located by thermostat/ top radiator hose on block.

try starting it without using accelearator, if it wont start then open bonnet and wiggle plugs/ remove & replace plugs and try starting again.

My r33 used to run rough under load, around 5000rpm, and it ended up being hair line cracks in the front of the coil packs. after wrapping them in electrical tape, i havent had any problems with them. This is a common problem with r33's

sorry i should have worded it better

its not a reason to accept that its not doing what it should. eg i have friends and go well the my car overheats (or anything really) but it doesnt matter coz its old. my thinking is ok it overheats so replace the thermo fan thats not working - dont just use the 'its old' as an excuse to not do anything.

    • You Gregged a whole racetrack!?
    • Look for broken wire or bad connector at the motor. Might not be it, but is worth starting there, as it is easy.
    • Hi everyone, I’m having an issue with my R32 GT-R. Sometimes, when the car goes over a bump or experiences some vibration, the 4WD warning light comes on the dashboard. When I check the code from the control unit in the trunk, it shows Code 19 – ETS Motor. However, everything seems to be working fine — if I turn off the engine and restart the car, the light goes away and everything functions normally. Has anyone experienced this before? Where should I start troubleshooting this issue? Thanks in advance!
    • I'm back from the dyno - again! I went looking for someone who knew LS's and had a roller dyno, to see how it shaped up compared to everything else and confirm the powerband really is peaking where Mr Mamo says it should. TLDR: The dyno result I got this time definitely had the shape of how it feels on the road and finally 'makes sense'. Also we had a bit more time to play with timing on the dyno, it turns out the common practice in LS is to lower the timing around peak torque and restore it to max after. So given a car was on the dyno and mostly dialled in already, it was time for tweaking. Luis at APS is definitely knowledgable when it came to this and had overlays ready to go and was happy to share. If you map out your cylinder airmass you start seeing graphs that look a LOT like the engine's torque curve. The good thing also is if you map out your timing curve when you're avoiding knock... this curve very much looks like the inverse of the airmass curve. The result? Well it's another 10.7kw/14hp kw from where I drove it in at. Pretty much everywhere, too. As to how much this car actually makes in Hub Dyno numbers, American Dyno numbers, or Mainline dyno numbers, I say I don't know and it's gone up ~25kw since I started tinkering lol. It IS interesting how the shorter ratio gears I have aren't scaled right on this dyno - 6840RPM is 199KMH, not 175KMH. I have also seen other printouts here with cars with less mods at much higher "kmh" for their RPM due Commodores having 3.45's or longer (!) rear diff ratios maxing out 4th gear which is the 1:1 gear on the T56. Does this matter? No, not really. The real answer is go to the strip and see what it traps, but: I guess I should have gone last Sunday...
