Hi all fellow Liners!

I just need some advise on mods for my Skyline.

I've had a guy give me a quote on a few things. Guy from Ovaboost Performance in Malaga.

Basically want to do some minor type stuff, know absolutely sweet f all about these things and really want to learn as much as I can.

What I got quoted on was:

Intercooler,

3" Dump pipe (cause it's stock from the cat back)

Manual Boost controller &

SAFC.

This according to him would get me about 250rwhp. Think it involved turning up the boost of the turbo alittle. The approximate cost was $2500, which includes fitting and tuning.

At this stage I don't want to go overboard, but maybe down the track I will change the turbo as well.

Just want to know what you guys think, recommend etc? Also I've been told it's better to have and Auto boost controller.

I'm currently hitting 228hp with a front/dump turbo back exhaust and an air filter. boost is standard.

front mount/safc/tune should give me more than an extra 20HP, so you'd hopefully hit 270hp. although some people have said new injectors might be needed after 270hp.

where do i get an intercooler pipped and fitted for $1000 ?

i would forget the safc and put the money into a better electronic boost controller because you only have limited boost to work with on the stock turbo and you dont want to waste 2 psi as a spiking buffer .

Or just forget about boost control , youll probably hit about 10psi with a 3inch exhaust anyway and then put the money towards a powerfc which is a full replacement computer and much more programable than the safc.

arkon, you were saying about not using the SAFC, does the electronic controller adjust to our fuel type etc too? Cause the guy was telling me that the SAFC did this. I don't know if I really want to go too much into upgrading the computer (PowerFC), just gonna do a little at this stage.

adjusting to our fuel type is not really required the stock ecu will do just fine on 98 octane fuel at the tune level you are looking at .

an electronic boost controller will do the same thing as the manual boost controller , ie control boost . however it does it with more accuracy and is controllable for hi and lo settings things like that .

the problem with the safc without going into to much technical stuff is it doesnt do that much so you wont find a huge gain with it now , maybe 15-20kw and later on it wont offer the level of tuning required to support more serious mods . so for the level your at the stock ecu will be fine

I see, now things starting to make sense!

I was told by someone the same thing about the controlling of the boost, but wasn't sure if it would be necessary. I think I'll go back and get him to give me another quote with the electronic controller. I don't want to have to go back and make changes later cause I wont be happy.

Hi pulp,

Do you want to go faster or just have a 250rwhp dyno to brag about?

If the answer is faster;

* S-afc II is a good move. Buy one second hand for around $400 + $100 to tune.You can turb around and get most of your money back if and when you need a PFC.

* Manual bleeder boost controller. Nothing wrong with them for a factory turbo. Don't waste money on an electronic one. Aim to make good power at around 10-12psi, this is enough on the factory turbo to get you a low 13.

* Consider the front mount upgrade carefully. Pick the correct size based on your final application. If you are going to be happy with the factory turbo then reconsider getting one, it won't stop you doing low 13 quarter mile passes. As a note consider how many people can't go that quick with a front mount on the stock turbo (there are reasons why).

* exhaust improvements are a great idea. go for it.

Other things to consider...

Pineapples $100 and gets you more traction.

Adjustable exhaust cam gear. Retarding the timing on the exhaust cam nets you some earlier boost and about 10hp right through the power band. $200 DIY.

Lightweight flywheel (assuming you don't have an auto) .Along with an upgraded clutch this is worth putting in to experience increased acceleration (I gained almost half a second drop over the 1/4).

The forced induction section has plenty of good info so you don't have to reinvent the wheel.

Learn a little and you won't become a 'bolt on boy'. Instead you go faster for less effort. It's fairly easy and cheap to get low 13's out of an R33 gtst, you just need a little 'good' information. There is plenty around.

Yes the faster factor is what I intend on achieving.

With the front mount option, I do intend on upgrading the turbo down the track so I think getting one installed would be the way to go.

I think it's a great idea what you said about the SAFC II and saving up for a PFC later. I think this guy quoted me $660 + $110 to tune.

Although, considering I want to put a bigger turbo in later, do you think I should get the electronic boost controller now?

I will head off to the forced induction section and have a read I think!

you can import a brand new SAFCII from greenline or nengun i think it was for $450 landed in under 2 weeks.

My friend got his Power FC from Greenline for $1100 landed in less than 2 weeks so you won't need to search around for 2nd hand.

also look into getting more traction as the pineapples was mentioned. the more of that power hits these ugly bumpy streets we got here the better but you need to be able to control that power.

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed 
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
