Hi Guys,

Im trying to reduce the load and increase the cooling on my RB26 as much as possible. I have already fitted oversize pullies to it, taken the air con off, and am thinking about converting the cooling system to an electric water pump by davies craig, and twin thermo fans. I already have a Aluminium radiator.

The car will mainly be used for street & track work, but i plan to drag it as well.

Has anyone here fitted an electric water pump to their car or have thermo fans? What was your experiences, likes, dislikes etc.

i have one thermo fan (nothing else) on my car which blows onto the alternator. Only time it ever over heats is on those 35 degree and over days. I think with the alloy radiator and 2 thermo fans it should be sweet.

P.S - My car is an s13 w/rb20t using the ca18t radiator, there is also a 76mm thick FMIC blocking the radiator so id say it does a pretty good job.

A friend is running this water pump on a 350rwhp+ turbo datto 1600, with large aluminium radiator and twin 10inch thermos. Nothing but good reports. In bad traffic on the really hot days the temp will get hot, but not over heat.

I was keen on reading a review of the Davies Craig water pump about three years ago in Autospeed, but before the article came out, Davies Craig threatened legal action if the story was published.

So what was the deal there?

I guess what i want to know if they are reliable in a high HP situation, where there may be alot of heat generated during the track sessions, and what sort of load effect does the water pump / fan have on an engine.

Only 7.5amps it says on the site. I thought it would be a bit more as thats only 90W at 12volts.

But team this up with a big thermo & you'll soon find out how good your alternator is.

I just want a decent thermo as my clutch fan shat it's self.

ylwgtr2 has put together a good twin thermo package on his GTR using falcon twin thermo's and a custom temp switch.

Also I recall Sydneykid has nothing nice to say on the DC electric water pump. I recall the dispute Autospeed had with DC over the pump so my personal choice is to avoid it.

i have a pwr alloy radiator with a 16in thermo and its never gone ova 80 degrees even on the dyno taking off the factory fan will take the load off the wp with an electric water pump if it fails youll boil your engine .if only your thermo fails anything ova 60kph it wont matter

Hey I was looking at an alternative to both ! I'll bounce it off you guys and see what you think. I've owned and built a few engines over the years and was always chasing every bit of horse power I could get for free. Seen some interesting ones over the years.The most memorable being a fan driven altenator. But I digress. I looked at drving the standard water pump electricaly and finally after seeing a fan on a Lexus V8 got me thinking. You see the fan on that engine is drive by a small hydrolic pump through the power streering pump. So I wanted to try and use this pump to drive the water pump itself as the power steering pump runs any way. I dont think the load would be much higher so you might get some free horse power from this set up. Just a bit of food for thought and if I run across one of those fans in a wrecking yard I might give it a go

    • The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same.     • Yeah dunno why johhny posted that here with no context, just post on FB/insta bro where he put it up?  Laine had an off at T4 during Thurs prac, he's ok, car is less than perfect, they are done for the weekend, he can fill in the rest. Bando also binned it like 100m up the road.
