Hi guys,

Doing a rebuild on my motor at moment (RB25DET) which includes forgies, rods, head p'n'p, fully balenced bottom end, cams, new intake/exhaust manifolds lots of other trick bits too.... also got an oil cooler too keep things in check, now should I spend anther couple of hundred $$ to upgrade to a N1 oil pump or is the standard one up to the job??

Once the car is finished I will be doing as many track days, drags, hillclimbs etc as I can but is essentially a street car thats driven pretty hard :burnout:

I would think the water pump should be find as it is a near new item anyway plus I will have a low temp thermistat and 40mm alloy radiator, or should I upgrade this to N1 item too? What about thoughs electric water pumps anyone ever used one of those?? Cause ive been told N1 pumps are build for constant high rpm use and not much good for street use, i know there isnt as many blades in the N1 pump(6 large instead of 8 smaller)

Oil pump is a good upgrade for peace of mind. Also the fact it could save your engine. If your running higher boost and or have oil cooler u need larger oil pump.

don't know about the water pump.

Probably a good idea if your racing to get Gauges for Water Temp and Oil pressure. Then u know what is needed.

Hi Luke, if you had done a search you would have read many times that an N1 oil pump is simply a standard pump with a higher pressure relief spring. By doing a search you would have also found that the N1 water pump is for sustained high rpm use, and as such not so good for a road car. The search button is your friend. As for elecrtric water pumps, there are a number of threads on that subject that would have pooped up when you did a search. The Motorsport forum would have helped a number of times with some good tips when you searched for hillclimbs, supersprints etc.

PS; yes i have seen that seach button there before I always wondered what it did :confused: ............ of cause I did a seach but do you know how many theads come up when you type in "N1 oil pump" and 90% of them are irrelevant to what you are actually looking for :kick:

So by saying that can anyone just pull the standard oil pump out, give it harder spring and that it, you've got yourself an N1 pump?

If you are running the Series 1 R33 RB25DET with its small oil pump crank engagement, I'd be inclined to stick with the stock lower pressure RB25DET pump.

The RB25DET pump is fine, it supply's plenty of oil pressure for the rev's a mild rb25 is going to visit, (7000-7500rpm).

If you dead set want the N1 pump and have a S1 R33 make sure you get the R33 N1 pump and buy the crank collar.

I went though the decision when building up my RB30DET.

I decided on the RB25DET pump as I didn't want to spend the extra on a crank collar. At the time the JUN collar I found was ~$600 from memory.

what do you call a mild RB25?? Im hoping for 350rwkw + once the rebuild is done and probably gonna visit 8000rpm now and then.

The N1 pump has NO MORE FLOW, the relief valve simply blows off at a higher pressure. So the oil cooler is irrelevant. If you want more flow to service the oil cooler, then buy a pump that flows more.

There are 3 versions of "RB26 N1 oil pump" that I know off. The R32 one will fit the RB25, the early R33 one will also. The late R33 and R34 won't fit. There is no such thing as an "RB25 N1 oil pump".

You can use an R33 and R34 RB26 oil pump (N1, standard or aftermarket) on an RB25, but the RB25 crank is skinnier at the oil pump flange. So you need a spacer ring (collar) that fits between the crank and the oil pump. I have only used a Jun one and they are not cheap.

My suggestion, use your standard RB25 oil pump (if it is in good condition) and buy a 5 psi higher pressure relief spring from your local spring supplier. For ~$2 you have an N1 oil pump.

Hi Sydneykid, in your opinion, how does the Greddy/Trust oil pump stack up to all the other aftermarket oil pumps for the rb26?

Hi Joel, I wouldn't be surprised if the aftermarket (high flowing) oil pumps aren't made by the same people. The internals sure look similar.

For what they are, they are rediculously expensive. Last engine I built I used a dry sump set up, the cost was similar.

Not saying your wrong Gary but a JUN pump from Greenline is about $1100 or a Trust one from Nengun is about $1140 delivered say we allow $1500 icluding tax, gst

Can you honestly do a new dry sump set up on a RB for $1500 including all lines conections fittings, pump and tank

no you cant but you can by a three stage scavendge pump for the same money as an aftermarket pump!!!! Then all you need is a resevoir a custom sump scavenge point and line and fittings it could be done for around 3 if you did all the work. Its a very good option for those who are serious!!!!

    • I checked the injectors again (1 and 2, since they’re easiest to access) to make sure they weren’t clogged. Even though the entire fuel system had been cleaned, I wanted to be certain. Everything looked clean, so I reinstalled and connected everything. When I started the car to confirm everything was okay, it immediately revved up high, so I shut it off straight away. I checked to see if I’d missed a vacuum hose or something, but everything was connected. On the second attempt, the car ran without the high idle, but I noticed a distinct “compressed air” sound coming from the engine bay. Tracing the sound, I pushed injector #6 forward slightly and the noise stopped — it turned out it wasn’t seated properly, despite the fuel rail being bolted down. While holding it in place, the car idled steadily without stalling and ran for over 5 minutes. At this point, I pulled all six injectors out just in case I hadn’t seated them correctly or dirt had gotten onto the O-rings. Unfortunately, I discovered that I had damaged 3 out of 6 injectors (the OEM 270cc ones) during installation. So yes, this was my fault. Since only the pintle caps were damaged, I’ve ordered a Fuel Injector Service Kit from NZEFI to refurbish them. In the meantime, I reinstalled my new injectors – the car now idles fine for over 15 minutes without stalling. I have not attempted to drive it so far. It’s not perfect yet, as it hesitates when the throttle is pressed, but it’s a big improvement. Unplugging the IACV with the new injectors idles at around 800rpm, even with the IACV screw tightened fully. But this is probably due to tune.
    • I wanted to try and preserve the front bumper as long as possible, they're not cheap and are made to order in Japan. Taking inspiration from my previous K11 Micra build where I made an undertray for the Impul bumper, I did the same for this BN Sports bumper but a little slimmed down.  This time round I only made a 'skid plate' (if that's the correct wording/term) for just the bumper surface area, the Micra version covered the gap like an undertray. Starting off with a sheet of mild steel approx. 0.9mm thick 4ft x 2ft in size. I traced around the bumper, cut it out and cleaned the edges. Luckily I was able to get two halves from one piece of metal In the video I installed it as is, but I've since then I've removed it to spray and add a rubber edging trim. The rubber trim is suitable for 1-2mm and it's a really nice tight fit. The bolts had to be loosened due to the plates being too tight against the bumper, the trim wouldn't push on I used some stainless M6 flat headed bolts for a flusher finish (rather than hex heads poking down), I believe this style fastener is used for furniture too incase you struggle to source some. The corner's are a little wider, but this may be an advantage incase I get close to bumping it  The front grill got some attention, finally getting round to repairing it. Upon removal one fixing pulled itself out of the plastic frame, one side is M8 that fixes inside of the frame, where as the other side is M5. Not knowing I could get replacements, I cut down an M8 bolt, threaded it inside the frame along with a decent amount of JB Weld.  The mesh was replaced to match the bumper. One hole on the bonnet/hood had to be drilled out to 8mm to accommodate the new stud, once the glue had set it could be refitted. I think the reason the grill was double meshed was to hide the horn/bonnet latch (which makes sense) but I much prefer it matching the bumper Bumper refitted and it's looking much better IMO The Youtube video can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVZP35io9MA

There's nothing wrong with having coloured silicone hoses, but I realise as I'm getting older I prefer monotone engine bays with a splash of colour on the engine cover(s). I cover this in a lot more detail in the Youtube video, so unfortunately there's limited photos of the process. The intercooler, upper radiator, boost vacuum and upper breather hoses were all changed to black silicone with mikalor clamps. The only blue left is a blanking cap at the back of the inlet manifold and the GReddy pulleys (which will be replaced for stock when the cambelt gets replaced) While the intercooler pipes were off I gave them a quick clean/polish too A before photo I do have a replacement air filter on its way.
