some of u might know that ive had a cooler sitting in my room for like 2 months now,so im finally putting it in, the pipeing is 1/2 done,but im kinda waiting a few more days as im waiting for a turbo, anyways heres a pic of what im doing, does any1 think this is a better idea than the usual way or what?

personally i dont think theres much difference as the japs have been doing the throttlebody pipe going the long way around the engine for ages

yeah I can see a problem you have the pipes going the wrong way the pipe from the turbo goes the shortest route to the cooler

and the intake piping goes from the other side

this is boostmeister piping I think it is effective adn the runs are very short .

there are aother ways as well would you like to see them

im doing it the normal way now as the pipes where they go from the turbo and the J pipe are too close,soo ill just do it the normal way and get some exaust wrap to put it around the pipeing that sits infront of the engine this pipeing was PISS easy as i had no cutting at all and has so far cost me 90 bucks

A mate of mine has had the factory GTS-t plenum cut, and the throttle body added to the end, so that the intercooler pipes no longer need to go over the engine. It is an extremely neat job, looking like it came out of the factory. Although it would cost a bit more than than running the pipes over the engine it is a much neater and more efficient design.

Just my opinion though.

To be completely blunt, and to risk being called "arrogant", that's the worst idea EVER. :D

The stock inlet plenum has baffles and air deflectors inside the plenum chamber to distribute air flow evenly to all 6 cylinders. These baffles and deflectors are designed for a side intrustion design, and if you weld that shut and move the air entrance to one end of the plenum, you'll completely disrupt the airflow characteristics of the plenum chamber, and risk having a few cylinders run rich, and worse, a few cylinders run LEAN!

To be honest, I know a few people who have done this modification, and it *seems* to work okay, but I sure as HELL wouldn't consider doing that on my car.

Invest in a proper plenum chamber, or live with another ~80cm of piping IMHO.

I agree with you Merli, I have a Greddy plenum, but it costs $1600, and I know most people don't have that sort of money. I agree that the airflow disruption could be bad, but probably no worse than heating the air by going back over the engine like the normal GTS-t design. Don't think its the worst idea ever, the guy is making 300rwhp.

I only added it as another suggestion, not one for us with the money to do it properly. Don't worry I don't think your arrogant, I will only do it to my car if it is the best way, but that usually means expensive.

The do it properly or not at all is probably a little on the harsh side for those people without the money to spend on there cars, there are a number of techniques that can improve the power cheaply, but aren't necessarily the best way.

There are alot of people starting to make custom plenums for Skylines, I know of 3 people in Perth who's designs are excellant, it not cheap but definately cheaper than the Jap ones.

Not really, as there is nothing really wrong with having the piping go over the top of the radiator, like most Japanese kits.

I haven't done any testing, but I would assume intake temps would only pick up a few degrees extra heat by passing over in this fashion...

If you wanted to goto extremes and relocate the throttle body, you would be chasing extreme horsepower (if not, that money would be better spent elsewhere).. and since you are chasing extreme horsepower, you will most probably be spending big on other parts of your engine, so it would make sense to do everything properly, and not do cut and shut jobs.

GReddy plenum is $1300 from Japan, and locally made ones can be found for less than $1000. Still a lot of money, yes, but as I said before, when chasing extreme horsepower, $1000-$1300 isn't a lot in the big scheme of things...

    • You very likely need to get it on a dyno and tune it. My assumption is, you've got an RB25DET tune in it, which has a different manifold, different injectors, and different cams as a minimum. What O2 sensor are you running?   When you say it runs extremely rich from idle all the way to redline, is this just free revving it you see that?
    • I seem to the be only person that is using a Haltech 2500 on an NA motor, I've installed a Bosch DBW throttle body to the OEM intake manifold and am having problems maintaining AFR even with the wideband o2.  It will run extremely rich at idle and up to redline, but under load it will go extremely lean in the 20s and i'm essentially having to rev it over 4k and feather the clutch to get it up to speed.  I've read a few other threads of about the butterfly, it seems removing the vacuum to it is supposed to have it remain open, i've noticed no difference under 4k with the vacuum line to it plugged.  I'm hoping someone here has had luck using the NA manifold with Haltech, and if they happen to have a tune for it.  
    • I don't know any details, but I really wouldn't be surprised if they do it as a LHD only version, at least initially.
    • Thanks for the replies everyone. Definitely a coolant push. Oil catch can is empty and always has been. As the engine is out now I'll be having a good look over things. I do have some detonation on the piston tops from a trigger issue back about 5 years ago. I felt it and shut off then bought a new ecu and changed the trigger. Never been an issue since. It never hurt the power, its made almost 80hp more since that incident but I will pull the bearing caps to take a look. If the bearings are damaged I will do a bottom end refresh. Head is being re conditioned at the moment and the block will be cleaned and checked to ensure it's flat. I'll go with a kameari gasket and see how it ends up. The other thing I'm not super keen on is the cylinder colours. I suspect this is from the inlet manifold. The plan will be to put it back together, retune and then stick a plazmaman billet inlet on it and retune. I'm happy with the power, if it makes a little more, then great, but I would rather just make everything more efficient at this stage.
    • Maybe they'll look to do a bunch of presales to help inject some cash fast for their financial issues...
