Being new to the Skyline experience, I have some rather basic questions and opinions that I would like to ask.

1. My fuel gauge fluctuates whilst driving, it will show say 3/4 when I start then after a short while drop to say 1/2 then back to 3/4, etc - this happens during the whole time I am driving - any ideas?

2. When changing from 3rd gear to 4th gear at around 100kmh, it is rather stiff and almost feels like it is struggling to get into gear, when doing the same change at lower revs it is fine.

3. My car appears to have very stiff lowered springs and the ride is very unforgiving (Tonkin Hwy is like a toboggan ride). I have been told that the shocks need to be changed to match the springs - is this correct? How do I tell what springs I have? What shocks should I go for?

4. [Real basic one this one] - what is in the space under the parcel shelf of a Series II besides the battery? There are 2 items in there that I don't know what they are.

Cheers, Al

Thanks Skyzerr, will see what I can do but don't have a digital camera. :D

Yeah one unit looks like it could be an ECU of some sort, it lies horizontal towards the RHS of the car. From pics I have seen of PowerFC's and stock ECU's it looks similar to that (bit it isn't a PowerFC).

The other item is between that and the battery, lying vertical. Looks to me like a fluid reservoir of some sort but it has wires coming out of it

Alan

Ok i can answer a few...

1. The fuel guage fluctuates like that, iv just leart to accept it. But i find if u warm up the car it won't happen as much , IE warm up b4 driving,

3. Lowered springs aye? depends how low, its more an issue of shock movement or damper, the springs are taking all the bumps and the shocks are getting the chance to move. I think your getting no shock travel @ all, (my opinion, could be wrong) So yes getting new shocks would be a good idea, but it prolly would be beta for you jsut to get new springs that are't so low.

4. Not sure, theres the battery,Fuse's and hicas ecu i belive, thats all i know.

Hope this helps

DOnnie

Yeah Donnie, I don't think there is any travel - when I tried pushing down on the side of the car there was virtually no movement at all and put my weight behind it.

Why would it be better just to get new springs and not shocks to match the springs?

Thanks for your help

Alan

I had a problem with my rear suspension when I first got the car. The rear left shock had leaked oil so I was getting no rebound from the shock, just the spring, which caused my car to jump around alot in the rear.

I put in some Ohlins adjustables and its still nice and firm but doesnt go all over the place.

    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... • I think Fitmit had some, have a look on there (theyre Australian as well)
    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily.
    • Actually, I'd say all three are the automatic option. Just the different trim levels. The manual would be RSFS, no?
