In the future I'll be looking at getting a 180 of some sort. I know the SR20 get praises from everyone but is there major problems with a CA18DET? I have heard rumors that they tend to through the main bearing after about 100,000km and yet I know of people who have had their car since about 70,000 km and its now gone well past 100,000km without a problem. Can anyone confirm or disprove this? What about performance wise? I know the 0.2 of a litre would make a differnce but how much and what about modifying options are there as many as the SR? I do remember reading an article in Zoom about Dexter's CA18 180, it had a lot of work done to and fairly flew, so going by that they can't be that bad, are they?

they're just getting on a bit mate, yeah the bearings will go, I think number 2 is that one which kicks it the most often (least oil)

the turbo can also be another worry since that'd be old too, so a split hose all the way to major shaft play etc can be seen (when you look at them and notice oil underneath it's not always the engine - could be the turbo oil drain pipe having a leak (check bov, if it has one, for large amounts of oil coming out, a little is fine; or else when you start it at the exhaust), checking the oil filler whilst engine is on, to see if it is bypassing the pistons (at least I think that's what its doing) - a large rev change isn't good haha

personally I'd go for 2L out of the two

also the money you may have to put into the ca engine over the next 18 or so months to maintain/fix may be the same as getting a lower mileage sr in better nic

but as you say - some engines go a lot further than newer ones; it's all to do with how tough a life its had :P

turbo's don't generally have an easy one

i had a silvia b4 the gtr n it was a ca18det, i rekon they are a fantastic little engine. mine had a high flow turbo, front mount, remapped com.,ect. runnin 14psi it did 138kw at the wheels and a 13.75 quarter mile. It was nothing to sneeze at, and they rev so sweetly and sound way better than a sr, sr's to me sound horrible; so drouny but thats just personal taste. The ca's are pretty bullet proof if looked after??!!. The turbo is a weak link so are the coils if the motors got more than 100k on the clock. It is vital you change the oil every 5thou as the turbo return line on the ca is undersized and gets cloged with burnt or old oil which can in turn block oil from getting out of the turbo and boiling the oil!!! Dont think the main is a major fault with them it can happen to any car as much as another. They do tend to do head gaskets, especially no 1 if boosted with shit fuel, n let me tell you changin a head gasket on a ca is not fun( eccs makes it a bitch) With similar mods the ca to a sr will always be around 15rwkw down but the ca silvia especially in man form are about 25kgs lighter than the sr equiped cars so its always pretty close!! as with all s13's 180's always seem to of had a harder life, so id go and auto silvia turbo with low mile then change it to manual which is what i did with mine (easy as job to do the change took a day) If you get an auto you can be more certain it hasnt been some jap boys drift mobile or had its a.rse wrapped!! Ne way good luck theres heaps more i could go on about so if you have ne more q's let me know.

Dunno about the weight tho as SR is fully alloy while CA has an iron block, So the SR also Revs more.

the ca is a cast iron block, the sr is an alloy block and weighs heaps less, is newer, pulls more torque and power

basically it's technology vs tractor ahahah

I'm not sure about durability of the two, like the amount they can withstand, but is was tested and proven that the sr can hold 250rwkw without internal strengthening...

exhaust note is purely subjective: I prefer sr since it's a nice, lous throaty sound; the ca sounds more 'sportier' (that is, imho more like an rb note than an sr)

I have read a few websites comparing the SR vs CA.  They are both great engines but the CA gets the more votes in most debates.  Meggala is currently importing a 180 CA...send him a PM regarding the engines etc.  He would be more then happy to discuss.

CA is a revvier engine than a sr

from my experience ca's bust head gaskets through age or over heating often caused by loosing coolant through a crack frail water line on the right rear side of the head/block. bucket and shim RB style and the short stoke allow it to rev and live

the sr is a torquier better responsive engine but has weakness at high rpm due to its rocker arm stud removing themselves. also they aquire bottom end knocks, not too sure why probably from using bad oil or slideways starvation

Ideal combo CA18 rev head and a 2L bottom end...... did somebody mention dexter.....

    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year. 
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
