Hi Guys,

As I am having my new exhuast manifold built I am planning on getting it ceramic coated in preference of heat wrapping or shielding, with a number or articles pointing to it's benefit in removing heat from the engine bay etc.

I have found a place in Perth which looks like they do it, Competition Coatings, located near to the motoplex. Has anyone dealt with these guys, had experience with ceramic coating etc.

I will talk to them on Monday and see what the rates are, is anyone else interested in having anything done as I can find out prices at the same time. I think you can get the exhaust housing of turbo's done with this method, which would look pretty cool.

I think they might have been B&B coatings in a previous life. If so they are very good. Coating the exhaust manifold is a good idea, and the ic pipes as well.

For those interested wrapping the aftermarket dump pipe is a great little mod for not much cash. Themotec make a blanket and tape package for turbos (blanket goes on the turbine). If you don't go the whole blanket thing then just the tape is good also (thats all I have).

rev210,

I like the cleaner look of the ceramic coating, although in the end the results are probably very similar. It should be worthwhile trying these guys, as the major expense use to be freighting the stuff over east.

Don't know how much it costs, I'm hoping its not too expensive. I wasn't going to bother with the intercooler pipes as they are polished stainless, I like the look. Hopefully if I get the exhaust manifold and turbo exhaust housing done then it will reduce under-bonnet temperatures. Have you noticed any difference with the wrapping/thermotec?

By the way, that is a very good 1/4mile time with the stock IC, well done.

Hicks,

Not yet mate. What we're trying to do is get another RB25DET, do all the work on that and then drop it in to my car. That way I won't be stuck walking and catching public transport, while my car is being done.

Hopefully, all going well, the stuff will be in during 1-2week of January.

Mate. I know soon you will get over the under bonet vanity thing because you now own a real performance car.:) When that magic moment arrives you will have no hesitation in ceramic coating the ic pipes.

Under bonet temp wise the tape is very good indeed. You can put your hand on the dump pipe straight after a drag race, when you know underneath it is glowing red. If you ever pop the bonnet with the engine running after a belt, you will notice a great deal of heat comes from the turbo/dump area, this is all but gone on mine.

Under bonnet temp is the secondary benifit BTW. The main benifit comes with trapping the heat energy in the pipe and converting it to gas velocity (pressure along boyles law lines).

GTS-t VSPEC, I would be very interested in getting my dump and front pipe done. An idea of price would be good, and a big thanks for your help.

Cheers

rev210, If the ceramic coat thing doesnt pan out, I will be thermo wraping my dump/front pipe (maybe even both coat and wrap:D ). Where is Thermotec available through, who would you recommend to do the job and what sort of dollars are we talking(dump/front/turbo blanket)? Hope thats not too many questions, any help is very gratefully received.

Most performance shops can get the stuff (thermotec). I prefer DEI Engineering stuff myself as it has a nice marker running the length of the tape for even wrapping. Bout $120 for the 60ft roll of 2inch wide DEI from revolution race gear, which is a little more than the termotec but worth it. The turbo kit from thermotec is about $150 -$200 from memory.

Do the job yourself. Its not technical, just hard work that requires a little patience and a couple of hours.

Here's how I did mine.

Ingredients: 60ft roll of tape / stainless steel hose clamps / large plastic cable ties / High temperature (silicone based) paint of your favorite colour.

1) clean the pipe to be wrapped / sand lightly.

2) paint evenly with high temp paint.

3) cure the paint by driving the car around and cooling down as per can instructions.

4) wrap the pipe evenly all the way along. DO NOT over wrap or under wrap sections out of slackness. Use plastic cable ties along the way to keep wrap in place.

5) Spay the wrapped pipe again with high temp paint, to seal off any slight air gaps.

rev210,

How much length will the 60ft cover? I am trying to determine the cost difference between the ceramic coating and the thermowrapping. What was the total cost, excluding your time, of thermowrapping your dump-pipe?

less than $20 for the odd bits

$120 for the tape. enough to do the back of turbo to cat and inlet pipe on the stock intercooler. Bits still left over somewhere.

I'd still use the ceramic coat for the manifold the same, it would be a right pain to wrap.

Would be very interested in the prices you got today for the ceramic coating. Looking at doing this at some point on exhaust and ic piping. May also look at redoing the rocker cover in a red crackle look (as per ferrari has). Not sure what colour the exhaust etc will be done yet, but was my understanding that you can keep the polished alloy look or choose as specific colour.

VSPEC2,

You may want to be sure that your talking about ceramic coating versus powder coating or HPC. Ceramic coating is primarily for very high temperature conditions, such as exhaust and is desgined to keep the temperature in the exhaust gases and not in the pipes. I belive that the ceramic coating only comes in a few colours, whereas powder coating and HPC are more varied but do not provide the same level of heat protection.

I will be going there in about 1 hour and will post any info tonight.

See'ya:burnout:

Thanks dude. Yeah, I know there's some differences in the coating and nomenclature used to describe them all - I think that HPC comes in a few of different varieties as well for different heat and 'high non-wettable oil shedding' coatings:

Let me us know how you go.

Well I did try and see the ceramic coater this afternoon. I finally found the right street, no f#cking street sign, found the right driveway, and it was a f#cking dirt track. Now I hope you can fully understand that there was no way in hell that my lowered and cleaned skyline was going to make it down that 4WD dirt track. I know it's the f#cking sticks, Wandi, but at least surface your driveway.

So to cut a long story short, I went and left without getting to the place. I'll call them tommorow and find out for sure that they will do this sort of stuff before I have to organise another car to travel down there driveway.

Sorry I didn't get the info yet, but the Skyline would never have forgiven me. So I'll get back to you all in the next couple of days with further details.

My car does the dukes of hazard duties, I found out a while back skylines love dirt tracks, must be the hicas.

I did 100+ km/h on a floodway/ wet/ pot holed gravel track down south, lots'o'fun:D

rev210, you are a sick bastard, we are going to have to take your skyline away for mistreating it. I've got the number of the guy (ceramic coaters) and will call him this afternoon, I'll try and get some pricing info off him.

Your not the first to suggest this.

It's true I am not one for respecting a cars appearance(inside or out)but, mechanically my car is treated better than most.

    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
    • Well they got my money but they are not getting my gearbox !
    • It's needed for rolling idle up, and I think it is a decider on VCT also.
    • I mean, not really. Link ECU's can absolutely still have errors from the ECU thinking it's getting a sensor it's not expecting. I would imagine the speed at the ECU level in Nistune does absolutely nothing anyway? I assume the ECU does not do any fancy TC stuff with regards to front+rear wheel speed or anything of that like anyway. Someone who uses Nistune may be more fluent in it.
